I get the feeling that it’s done and we are waiting because reasons but that’s just my gut feeling like you with ya boi Devon Dotson.

  • Man this does sound positive from his guardian. He would be the missing piece. Love his size and rebounding

  • @BShark Gotcha bud - - understand completely - -hopefully turns out good - -sure sounds good. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • It makes me wonder how much Self would play him. He would have some catch up to do but we really need his size and ability this year. He’s not going to be around three or four years so no worries with starting early. This would allow us to play traditional, which is really more along the lines of this team’s makeup.

There have been reports De Sousa has taken the standardized test, however, Falmagne indicated Angola native De Sousa, who moved to the United States a couple of years ago, will take a standardized test on Saturday.

“It’s not going to come down to the test, but more the core credits he has that transfer from back home,” Falmagne said. “The NCAA will have to look at all the credits he got. Is it something they will allow to transfer … see how many that is, see where he’s at.”

Falmagne said De Sousa, who has not yet returned his letter-of-intent to KU (that will happen in the next couple days; the week-long signing period runs until next Wednesday), could find out if he’s allowed to play for KU this season sooner rather than later. “Probably Monday or Tuesday,” Falmagne said.

In the past, however, it has taken the NCAA much longer to make decisions on such eligibility matters.

Falmagne said he had no doubt De Sousa, 19, could contribute to KU’s team right away.

“I think the kid is a pro,” Falmagne said. “I mean athletically he can play in the NBA today. So now it’s just the mental aspect. It’s growing. He’s working on it.”

As far as De Sousa’s progress at IMG this semester, Falmagne said: “He is doing extremely well. He’s definitely an All-American. He has been good on the court and in the classroom as well.”

At one point, after his sophomore year, De Sousa was the No. 2-rated player in the country by at least one recruiting service but dropped after returning to Luanda, Angola to represent his country in international basketball.

“He truly is a freak of nature,” Falmagne told The Star after the power forward committed to KU in August. “His upside is just out of this world. He’s a kid that can put his shoulder on the rim. He can dribble, he can shoot, he can post up, he has great footwork. He can play the game of basketball. More than that, he’s just a great kid,” Falmagne added.

De Sousa chose KU over Maryland, UCLA, Oregon and Indiana. He also had Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisville, North Carolina, Syracuse and others on his list.

KU coach Bill Self cannot comment on De Sousa until KU receives the signed letter-of-intent.

  • Sounds like he has done a good job of keeping up in school, which is always a question mark for some of these athletes. Would love to have him. So the main hold up is regarding his core classes right?

Yeah, whether or not they will count some classes.

I’ll say it right now though, given that KU got Cheick eligible and Marvin Bagley went to two fake schools and is playing for Duke this year after reclassifying I would be pretty salty if it doesn’t happen.

  • @BShark I feel the same way. Man this would be monumental for this season. Stoked about the possiblity!

  • Slightly behind Silvio vs. a walk on FB player. Duh!!! Come on down, Silvio! Man, I just love saying “Silvio!”

  • @BShark would he be using a 2017 scholarship

  • He would almost have to be as it would still be the 17 school year and it would count as his freshman season. One good thing is he should be in game shape, at least HS game shape.

  • @3genhawk Yes. Thankfully KU has one open due to the premature departure of the stache Whitman.

  • I happened to be watching twitter when I saw a KU fan profile say something to the effect of DeSousa was absolutely going to be a Jayhawk in December. That got retracted as all the particulars of reclassifying have not been worked out just yet. But I think there still remains a HUGE chance that it happens.

Forget red shirting this guy. He gets reclassified, he is playing.

He will be our 4th Big man.

We need that extra big body off the bench.

    Especially in March!

  • Sounds like his guardian is pretty confident. Is anyone aware of past cases like this? Cheick was a little different. Maybe bagley?

  • For a change we can go into the season not having to worry about the next class and wondering what rabbit Coach Self will need to pull out of a hat. I can get used to it.🍻

  • HawkChamp said:

Cheick went to a bogus school, Silvio presumably doesn’t have that issue. He was in Africa longer I think though and that’s what they need to be sure on, classes in Africa. At least this is what I think is the case based on reading the articles that popped up.

  • A good parallel is Austin Wiley at Auburn last season. I️ just have to put this out there. Just because this dude broke the story, don’t think it’s ok to DM recruits and ask for info. It’s one of the worst things you can do as a fan, and absolutely has affected recruitments. Doing it makes the entire program and fanbase come across as creepy. You wouldn’t want randos filling your kid’s inbox. So just don’t do it, even if you think you can break a story.

  • Bill Self is pretty confident too @HawkChamp on last night Hawk Talk when Cunliffe at semester was mentioned he also strongly hinted at another addition.

@FarmerJayhawk You will never see me dm’ing recruits that’s for sure. This put the information out there when obviously the staff didn’t fully want it out there yet. Hence Matt Scott having to be vague about it.

Ha, well you won’t catch me doing it either seeing as how I have no clue what dm’ing even means lol. - -I feel good just to be able to know how to pull up the simplest things - -little lone dm’ing - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

My question would be is: ? Why does his legal guardian feel that the NCAA will make a quick decision about Silvio about his eligibility as where they as it says always take their time with other cases? - -Like Cheick for example.

Now since the initial came out I sit back and pondered , I feel that Coach Self obviously been in contact with Silvio since his commitment and they have talked and can also bet Coach Self when heard they Silvio might try and re classify hold him something along the lines that we could sure use him if that was what he wanted to do.

I say this cause It was stated in another article that the soonest he would be able to be here/or play would be right before the Texas game. - -I think his guardian even mentions/hints a little and that is WHY would Silvio come here for basically a 1/2 of the season if he thought he wasn’t going to be getting any playing time? - -Why would he waste a year of eligibility as just a practice player?

Then I thought well WHY would we even want to lose a year of eligibility with him - if we just toughed it out this year with what we had and then have him for the full year NEXT year? - - Then AFTER I beat my head against my door - - -slapped myself in the face about 20 times - -and stuck my head in the freeze I thought - - - -OH YA THAT’S - -we need this guy, and we need him bad lol.-- It’s like what was said off the shiver. - -ya he is going to be behind scheme wise - -but you don’t have to draw a play for him cause he is active, active, active - -which translates rebounds , rebounds, rebounds. A win Win if he can do it. We will still have him plenty this yr if possible - you figure the 18 game big 12 season , any games in the post season big 12 - -then the NCAA’S well worth it -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54

This case looks much more cut and dry than Cheick’s case was.

  • I see folks elsewhere comparing Silvio to Diallo in terms of IQ and learning the sets and Bill Self’s system. To me, while Silvio needs polishing of course, it appears as though he is much farther along from a basketball skill standpoint than what Diallo ever was. Maybe I’m wrong, but if the NCAA allows him to play in the spring, I would guess that we will see someone who has more awareness and more versatility than Cheick did and therefore be much more beneficial.

  • He’s got a lot more experience than Cheick did, that’s for sure. However, he’ll have much less time in Self’s defensive system, so he’ll struggle mightily for quite awhile.

  • Silvio would lose only the current one half season of eligibility and would have 3 and one half years available. Having said that, I don’t believe Silvio will stay here that long so it really is a moot point.

  • You see that someplace JayHawkFanToo? From what I’ve read it would count as a full year eligibility wise but I will admit to only modest research on the topic.

Are you sure about that? I think this half season would count as 1 season and he would have 3 left. I have never heard of anyone running out of eligibility midway through their season which would be the case if he used all of his eligibility.

  • @RockkChalkk @Kubie.

He would have 3-1/2 season of eligibility total (as he would forfeit the current first semester half) he would use the one half the second semester this season and have 3 years left after this season. He would only lose the current half season until he is eligible to play the second semester. Makes sense?

If he does not play this season he would have 4 full season of eligibility.

  • @RockkChalkk This would count as his freshman season whether it was only a half a year or not - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54 @JayHawkFanToo yep ok, that’s what I thought. I think the post could be read a few different ways which is why there was some confusion.

  • KUSTEVE said:

@FarmerJayhawk We need a 4th big. We might not need him, but if we do, we could certainly do much worse

I think we absolutely will need him. If he can post up and rebound, he will be a difference maker. And obviously we could do far worse.

  • @RockkChalkk @JayHawkFanToo

Jo Jo White encountered this exact scenario and Ted Owens made a fateful delicious. White was old for his grade and came to KU in Dec. so if for some reason he stays 4 years, Bill would have to choose as well.

Due to his early enrollment, White had only one semester of eligibility and Head Coach Ted Owens opted to have White play for the 18 games in the first semester rather than eight in the second.[9] He graduated with a degree in physical education.[9]

  • Uh make that decision.

  • I wish Bill wouldn’t say the international pipe line being open is strange. ahem adidas still scares me. Not that I think the staff did anything wrong, but who knows what adidas did? If recruiting seems strange to the coach is that a red flag? Hopefully I’m just paranoid, as I’d hate to see any harm befall our beloved Jayhawks.

  • @dylans KU didn’t do anything wrong directly, I’m fairly sure of that. We’d be foolish to believe absolutely nothing happened though. The outlook on Doke changed from “Nike kid going to a Nike school” to ending up at KU.

The alternative was not recruiting top level players at all.

  • @BShark does rhe signed loi bring the reclassification talk to an end?

  • 3genhawk said:

No. That still should happen and hopefully we find out this week.

  • If it weren’t for Bill Self and the belief in his character, I’d actually be surprised if payoffs didn’t happen regarding Kansas, on that dusty, sweaty continent.

  • Bill obviously thinks Silvio is an immediate impact and believes he should be a top five recruit if not for playing over in Africa. He would be the third big and would be a much better option than Mitch, who, bless his heart, doesn’t have the size to battle against athletic bigs and doesn’t do anything offensively. The dude can ball with the best of 'em.

    Yeah, Self seems pumped.

  • @Fightsongwriter I was thinking JoJo only played 1st semester of his senior yr.

  • I remember seeing something on Silvio doing well in international ball. I think that was part of the reason he didn’t play AAU this past year right? Maryland wanted him bad and he has a solid base of skills to work with and refine. He’s a physical specimen, just like Big Dave. Self bringing the beef with the burgers next season

  • Mechanically, all KU would have to do in a reclass would be to not hold him to his 18-19 LOI. Just receiving it has no impact.

  • @Barney You were thinking correctly.
