I’d redshirt him. He won’t pass Mitch in the rotation, so barring an absolute emergency, wait until 18-19.

I’d hope he could pass Mitch but of course Mitch has a huge leg up by knowing what to do.
Not sure a RS would be worthwhile since I don’t think he plans to be around to exhaust his eligibility.

Yeah the first thought came to my mind when I read it. So I thought this thread would be fun to discuss the possibility. Just not a lot of things it could be. Could be something as simple as changing high schools. It’s something relevant or it wouldn’t have been mentioned though. Also I will add it very clearly is not set in stone, whatever it is.

Correct. 8 eligible players now + Cunliffe (eligible at semester) + 3 sit out the season transfers in the Lawsons and Moore = 12

Interesting.
I’m going to wait to see how this plays out before making any more comments. The benefits of this certainly could be enormous down the line.

@BShark Yes and if a guy isn’t going to play all 4 years and can possible contribute in spot minutes why wouldn’t you want him here now? Although hindsight being 20/20 Svi could’ve stayed home another year. Svi was too young, I believe Silvio is already 18 though.

I️ think everyone is overestimating how much he could help yet this season. Our scheme for bigs is notoriously difficult to pick up, and Silvio is still learning the game.

This is a fair assertion. Even if he is the 4th big just having a 4th big is better than not for emergency situations.

@FarmerJayhawk I thought Silvio had played bb for 9 years. His strong suit is he an elite rebounder.

I see it like this… It’s better if KU is going to add a body to get Silvio in the fold early. Gives him another half a year prep with Self, a huge leg up going into next year. It is certainly much better than adding a random walk-on body that would then not be with the team next year.

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying don’t take him at semester. You absolutely do without a moment’s hesitation. I️ am saying temper expectations for what he can do. Don’t expect him to be a good defender, regardless of his physical tools, and don’t expect him to score much. Picture a much worse Cheick, who’s obviously talented but has no clue what to do.

Cheick didn’t play enough. He was more effective than Jamari in limited time despite not knowing what to do. Now part of this is the teams Cheick did get more minutes against were typically not as good. Maybe Self has learned. My main issue with Cheick is that he thought he had to shoot every time he touched the ball. Hopefully Silvio doesn’t have this problem.

I’d love to see him join the team early and see if by the 2nd half of conference play or closer to March he could become a 5-6 minute guy. Just his body alone to use for fouls, screening, having a bigger body on the floor is something we cannot undervalue. We might have more lopsided games this season where PT would be available at end of game situations to save our starters from wear and tear. Obviously not being apart of summer and fall puts him so far behind the times. History says we are going to lose someone at some point (knock on wood). We need bodies

The bigs situation just got much better.

Definitely even if he just practices its a leg up. Helps the current team with post bodies in practice.
If an injury happens or he happens to catch on to the system in time to get some game action then its a win-win.
