SILVIO DESOUSA
-
@FarmerJayhawk I thought Silvio had played bb for 9 years. His strong suit is he an elite rebounder.
-
He’s just raw still. At most he’s an emergency body.

If he can rebound and dunk he’s a better option than Mitch imo. Of course I upvoted you though because you are right and I know how Self is and he favours the kid that knows what he is doing on the court.
-
@FarmerJayhawk We need a 4th big. We might not need him, but if we do, we could certainly do much worse

I see it like this… It’s better if KU is going to add a body to get Silvio in the fold early. Gives him another half a year prep with Self, a huge leg up going into next year. It is certainly much better than adding a random walk-on body that would then not be with the team next year.
-
@FarmerJayhawk i would rather him be here learning than playing AAU ball, any experience gained will be huge for next year’s team
-
Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying don’t take him at semester. You absolutely do without a moment’s hesitation. I️ am saying temper expectations for what he can do. Don’t expect him to be a good defender, regardless of his physical tools, and don’t expect him to score much. Picture a much worse Cheick, who’s obviously talented but has no clue what to do.

Cheick didn’t play enough. He was more effective than Jamari in limited time despite not knowing what to do. Now part of this is the teams Cheick did get more minutes against were typically not as good. Maybe Self has learned. My main issue with Cheick is that he thought he had to shoot every time he touched the ball. Hopefully Silvio doesn’t have this problem.
-
I’d love to see him join the team early and see if by the 2nd half of conference play or closer to March he could become a 5-6 minute guy. Just his body alone to use for fouls, screening, having a bigger body on the floor is something we cannot undervalue. We might have more lopsided games this season where PT would be available at end of game situations to save our starters from wear and tear. Obviously not being apart of summer and fall puts him so far behind the times. History says we are going to lose someone at some point (knock on wood). We need bodies

Always good to get the blood dry.
-
Apparently Silvio is trying to make this happen.
-
If nothing else it would give him a leg up on McCormack next season. (As far as his personal motivations could go)
-
things are heating up!!
-
-
Y’ALLLLLLL
-
Will be at Kansas December 15th!
-
WOWZERS
-
The bigs situation just got much better.
-
Definitely even if he just practices its a leg up. Helps the current team with post bodies in practice.
If an injury happens or he happens to catch on to the system in time to get some game action then its a win-win.
-
Beats the pants off taking another walk-on.
-
Five mo’ fouls…

Whoooooooooooooooooooa - - - -crazy - - - - - - but crazy good. - - -So please help me a little bit though ok? - So De-Sousa is going to be on our campus by the 15th of DEC ? - - Does this mean he would be eligible to play on this years team? - - Would he be like losing a 1/2 yr of eligibility by coming in? - -please help clear this for me guy ok? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@jayballer54 First of all an update: Official KU journos saying it’s not set in stone yet.
So if it happens, he doesn’t lose a half year, this would simply be his FR year. So next season he would be a Sophomore.

Ahh gotcha. - -This would be sweet if he could make this happen. - He says the NCAA has already approved this? - If that’s the case what would be the hold up as to why it wouldn’t take pplace? - -would it just be simply the Coaching staff? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@jayballer54 Supposedly there will be an official announcement today. They also will get getting his LOI in to KU today, which he signed yesterday of course.

Probably not until after school today at the earliest. Might be up to KU more than anything though.
All we can do is sit and wait.
-
@BShark Well no matter - -sure sounds all good I think I just wet myself a little bit so excited lol - -na just playin - -but really good news we could sure use the help on the front line - -ya sure he gonna be behind learning the offense and such but hey even if he can help spot Doke and Preston for bit - - extra body - -they take like suppose to be pretty decent rebounder. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yep. Silvio says it is done and Self knows but who knows at this point. I’m sure KU/Self have reasons to officially release news when they do.

I get the feeling that it’s done and we are waiting because reasons but that’s just my gut feeling like you with ya boi Devon Dotson.
-
Man this does sound positive from his guardian. He would be the missing piece. Love his size and rebounding
-
@BShark Gotcha bud - - understand completely - -hopefully turns out good - -sure sounds good. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

It makes me wonder how much Self would play him. He would have some catch up to do but we really need his size and ability this year. He’s not going to be around three or four years so no worries with starting early. This would allow us to play traditional, which is really more along the lines of this team’s makeup.

There have been reports De Sousa has taken the standardized test, however, Falmagne indicated Angola native De Sousa, who moved to the United States a couple of years ago, will take a standardized test on Saturday.
“It’s not going to come down to the test, but more the core credits he has that transfer from back home,” Falmagne said. “The NCAA will have to look at all the credits he got. Is it something they will allow to transfer … see how many that is, see where he’s at.”
Falmagne said De Sousa, who has not yet returned his letter-of-intent to KU (that will happen in the next couple days; the week-long signing period runs until next Wednesday), could find out if he’s allowed to play for KU this season sooner rather than later. “Probably Monday or Tuesday,” Falmagne said.
In the past, however, it has taken the NCAA much longer to make decisions on such eligibility matters.
Falmagne said he had no doubt De Sousa, 19, could contribute to KU’s team right away.
“I think the kid is a pro,” Falmagne said. “I mean athletically he can play in the NBA today. So now it’s just the mental aspect. It’s growing. He’s working on it.”
As far as De Sousa’s progress at IMG this semester, Falmagne said: “He is doing extremely well. He’s definitely an All-American. He has been good on the court and in the classroom as well.”
At one point, after his sophomore year, De Sousa was the No. 2-rated player in the country by at least one recruiting service but dropped after returning to Luanda, Angola to represent his country in international basketball.
“He truly is a freak of nature,” Falmagne told The Star after the power forward committed to KU in August. “His upside is just out of this world. He’s a kid that can put his shoulder on the rim. He can dribble, he can shoot, he can post up, he has great footwork. He can play the game of basketball. More than that, he’s just a great kid,” Falmagne added.
De Sousa chose KU over Maryland, UCLA, Oregon and Indiana. He also had Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Louisville, North Carolina, Syracuse and others on his list.
KU coach Bill Self cannot comment on De Sousa until KU receives the signed letter-of-intent.

Sounds like he has done a good job of keeping up in school, which is always a question mark for some of these athletes. Would love to have him. So the main hold up is regarding his core classes right?

Yeah, whether or not they will count some classes.
I’ll say it right now though, given that KU got Cheick eligible and Marvin Bagley went to two fake schools and is playing for Duke this year after reclassifying I would be pretty salty if it doesn’t happen.
-
@BShark I feel the same way. Man this would be monumental for this season. Stoked about the possiblity!
-
Slightly behind Silvio vs. a walk on FB player. Duh!!! Come on down, Silvio! Man, I just love saying “Silvio!”
-
@BShark would he be using a 2017 scholarship
-
He would almost have to be as it would still be the 17 school year and it would count as his freshman season. One good thing is he should be in game shape, at least HS game shape.
-
@3genhawk Yes. Thankfully KU has one open due to the premature departure of the stache Whitman.
-
I happened to be watching twitter when I saw a KU fan profile say something to the effect of DeSousa was absolutely going to be a Jayhawk in December. That got retracted as all the particulars of reclassifying have not been worked out just yet. But I think there still remains a HUGE chance that it happens.
Forget red shirting this guy. He gets reclassified, he is playing.
He will be our 4th Big man.
We need that extra big body off the bench.
Especially in March!
-
Sounds like his guardian is pretty confident. Is anyone aware of past cases like this? Cheick was a little different. Maybe bagley?
