All Is Well

  • All is well until strike 2. We know its coming. I hope it doesn’t

  • … for now.

I think a question is, who broke Lightfoot’s nose? Was it Lawson?

Reasonable possibilities - 1) pure accident, 2) Dedric, or 3) Whitman.

Notice that Whitman’s transfer came out on July 19. The articles on Mitch’s nose on July 21, referring to him having surgery (not the actual incident) and a “recent practice.” Self saying he got “hit” in practice. Vague. No reference to it being an accident.

Lawson got left behind on the Italy trip because of a practice incident and how he handled it. Certainly possible. In fact, for Self to put space between that punishment announcement and the report on Lightfoot would make sense, if it went down that way.

Speculation. But there has been no info on how Lightfoot broke his nose.

  • After a season of relatively minor (although if it’d been me in those incidents it certainly would have been major) incidents I’m hoping for a more peaceful season. I’m a little surprised the national spotlight didn’t shine negatively on us too much last year. I know Dawson isn’t playing this year. Hope the young man gets his act together because he’s got the most amazing opportunity to have someone pay his tuition so that he can play basketball at the best place someone could go to play basketball. I don’t know why any college kid would jeopardize such an opportunity.

  • @HighEliteMajor My gut feeling is that Lightfoot got punched by Lawson otherwise Self would not have suspended him.

  • @wissox You were saying ?

    @BeddieKU23 D Lawson correctional plan

Step 1: Lock self in gym Step 2: Pull head from ass Step 3: Hire Boy Scout to escort him to class, practice, dorm (repeat daily for 2 years) Step 4: Join local church and see the Light Step 5: Attend church when not in class, practice, gym, game, or dorm

  • Oh ffs.

  • @BeddieKU23 needs me to move in w/them!

  • @BeddieKU23 This could be interesting. Underage kid drinking alcohol? Prob not, or the bar and waitress will be in big trouble for serving him since she admits she knows him. Unless it is like one of those cases like where a drug dealer calls the police to report that someone ripped him off, and shows them his stash that has a few bags missing.

Either way, some really smart brains involved in this one. Hopefully, her accusation is false. If not, Self-storm gonna hit.

  • Right and wrong. Not hard

  • I believe him!

  • I am not sure if you noticed that this incident happened in Memphis; Overton Square is an entertainment district in Memphis similar to the Power an Light district in KC. When I first glanced at the article my first thought was Louise’s in Lawrence. 😄

Lawson had denied the incident and CBS Sports has a report with his statement and it indicates that Lawson story appear to be more right than wrong.

More importantly, were the drink alcohol? I believe he will turn 20 in October so he is obviously underage and should not be drinking alcohol. This kid needs to get his act together and realize the opportunity he was given or he will not or should not be playing at KU

  • Here is an updated story from the Memphis paper, The Commercial Appeal, that allegedly has seen the police report:

NEWS Former Memphis Tigers basketball star Dedric Lawson accused of skipping out on $88 bar tab

Yolanda Jones and Mark Giannotto | The Commercial Appeal

    Updated 1 minute ago

Dedric Lawson, the former University of Memphis basketball player who transferred to play at Kansas this offseason, has been accused of walking out on a $88 bill at Bar Louie in Overton Square early Thursday morning.

A waitress at Bar Louie filed a police report alleging that Lawson was at the restaurant at 2125 Madison Avenue around 1:30 a.m. when he failed to pay the bill for food and drinks totaling $88.20.

According to the report, the waitress told police that Lawson left without paying his tab and got in a black Nissan Maxima and left.

She said that she followed him outside and recognized him because she went to high school with him, telling officers that Lawson now “plays college basketball in Kansas,” according to the report. She was able to provide his phone number to police, the report said.

No charges have been filed against Lawson as police investigate the incident.

When reached by telephone for comment on Thursday, Lawson’s father, Keelon, was with his son and asked about the incident. Dedric Lawson told him, “he didn’t walk out on no bill.”

“He was at Bar Louie eating some food,” said Keelon Lawson, who previously served as an assistant coach and director of player development for the Memphis men’s basketball program. “He was there with his girlfriend and his cousin and some dudes were trying to buy his girlfriend and cousin some drinks and the dudes didn’t pay for the drinks and the waitress tried to make him pay for it. So he said he’s not going to pay for some drinks because some dudes were buying drinks for some girls.”

According to Keelon Lawson, Dedric Lawson doesn’t even drink alcohol and he questioned why his 19-year-old son had even been allowed into Bar Louie.

  • @mayjay Just as an aside: What percent of parents think their 19 year old kids drink alcohol? Now, what percent of 19 year olds actually do drink alcohol?

KU forward Dedric Lawson’s name appears on Memphis police report

  • My gut flinched from the outset when one of the Lawson brothers offered up a “F… you, Tubby!” upon parting from his former Memphis coach. Then when Dedric was left off the Italy trip, I thought, “O MY, another upcoming season of conflict.” Now more Lawson controversy involving a 1:30 a.m. bar incident. I’m old enough, and I have coached enough to know with absolute certainty that this recruiting project ain’t bound to go smoothly for all concerned. Bill Self has too much credibility at stake to allow this crap to scar his legacy.

  • @REHawk When the “F Tubby” stuff came out, I would have cut bait. But extreme need wins out over the right decision – I guess since just landing a nice crop of post recruits seems a struggle. As of now, forgetting the bar bill thing, I think the Lawson deal was a big mistake. Time may prove that wrong. If I was betting $100 either way, it would be an easy choice right now.

  • @HighEliteMajor

The bar tab thing turned out to be a big nothing burger.

  • @HighEliteMajor IT was a HUGE MISTAKE II can’t agree more, I did really good I went off and flipped sh- - about this BUT I’m doing my best to hold my tongue what a cancer - -Dedric Lawson is a cancer ok well never mind I’m getting wound up again. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @JayHawkFanToo WHERE IS smoke there is FIRE. - - OK I’m done - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

When you consider that he has got into trouble before should he have been out at 1am? Probably not. But this was absolutely nothing. The waitress tried to get him on the hook for drinks other people bought. Big joke.

  • @BShark It does seem unrealistic to expect a 19 year old kid in his home town to be in beddybye before 9 pm in the summer. On the other hand, there is the Roy axiom regarding when nothing good happens…

What Dedrick must learn from this is that hangers-on are willing to use you and then leave you hanging out to dry. Hopefully, he will learn to choose friends a bit more wisely. I am not optimistic this will happen because even his comments in the stories absolving him make it look like he acquiesced in a developing difficult situation and then walked away knowing he wasn’t legally responsible.

  • For a couple of decades I have been a devoted follower of Kansas basketball. Have come to cherish and respect the character and good behavior of most of the players who have worn the crimson and blue. But if I find that Dedric purposefully broke LightFeet’s nose I will rant against that recruit until he eventually and finally slithers away from Lawrence.

  • This is all too reminiscent of the Morri introduction to Lawrence. But with less talent and likely not as many years of service.

  • And then, there is this:

    http://www.espn929.com/articles/929-line-joe-jackson-allegedly-jumped-pick-game-tweet

Ok, so in a pickup game with the Lawsons in May, ex-Memphis player Joe Jackson claims he was jumped, beaten, and had a gun pulled on him by the Lawsons. This was at Penny Hardaway’s gym, and Hardaway had to step in. My first reaction to the bar tab was it was a big nothing story. Then I run into this story. I’m not so sure now about the Lawsons. 1 fight while playing in May; another in July at our practice. Hmmm.

I also saw this Joe Jackson dude ended up being arrested two days ago, with several guns, and Ecstasy pills. Maybe it’s a good thing the Lawsons got out of Memphis for their own personal safety. Remember the “good old days”, when all we had to worry about was car vandalism, and a bong in the dorm room?

  • @KUSTEVE Iirc it ended up being reported that the Lawsons didn’t even have a gun. But still, they tend to keep on finding trouble. 😕

Smoke? You mean he’s lighting up too? 🙂

  • @wissox Anything possible I reckon lol - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Lawson brothers = Morri twins Part 2

  • @AsadZ I think that comparison means that it is manageable. I hope that is the case. The Morris twins were at least manageable. Not so sure on this Lawson thing. My concern is that having roster spots filled, again, creates issues in recruiting – if this does blow up. We seem to have enough trouble as it is nailing down quality post players.

The over-under is the semester. If this does blow up, I think we’ll know by then. Our luck on transfers has not been stellar as of late with two post guys bailing quickly, and one good for only a season.

We has nice run with KY, Black, and Mickelson. But Coleby, Maxwell, and Whitman, not so much.

  • There exists a double edged sword in the matter of recruiting players who did not fit comfortably into other programs and settings. Our coaching staff can look for players who already show super talent on the court; and the year of Jayhawk practice time while gaining eligibility to play is a major plus. So, by the time transfers are eligible they, ideally, should be tried, tested and hungry to fit comfortably into a winning operation. On the other hand, players who did not fit in elsewhere (or were headaches to other coaches) sometimes fall into very touchy trial projects, quite likely to push various envelopes both on and off the court. From what I have read, I’ve a feeling that Newman is set to fit right into Bill Self Basketball as well as to glean favor from Jayhawk fandom. The Lawsons were hit with immediate negative fan, and probably coach reaction, what with the Tubby Smith bashing, verbally on record by KJ. Then brother Dedric drew a major setback via summer actions which cost him a team trip to Italy. Now more Dedric adverse publicity, perhaps not fully warranted, but broadcast negatively in the sporting news, nevertheless. And tucked away somewhere is the account of an explosive Lawson eruption vs. a former Memphis teammate, perhaps an incident reported to involve weapons on one or both sides. I am fully aware that recruiting quality bigs to an Adidas program located in the cold old winter Big 12 heartland is tough; but OUCH!

  • @HighEliteMajor The thing about Maxwell and Whitman is that they were baffling pick-ups at the time, even though as fans some of us tried to rationalize them. And in the case of Whitman well the post situation is so thin that the team just needed a body and he didn’t tie anything up beyond one season. Coleby was at least defensible and looked serviceable, but that ACL tear changed him. I’d include Withey in the good run.

I hope it works out, because Dedric is very talented as is Chandler. Chandler and JRE would be a dynamic duo.

  • @mayjay Three things I always told my boys:

    1. There’s nothing you can do after midnight that you can’t do before midnight.

    2. Nothing good ever happens after midnight.

    3. You’re known by the company you keep.

Actually four if there was further arguement, I’m the boss, I pay the bills and I said no.

  • @BShark Good grief … of course Withey. Best transfer pick up by Self. KY was the guy, though, that was a dead critical need pick up at the time. Would love to have a KY fall in our laps now. But it’s getting late. I agree on Whitman and Maxwell (who I always want to call Murray for some reason). Puzzling additions. Coleby did provide some value.

@brooksmd As a parent, #2 is perfect advice. I’ve given it … but we’ve all probably had a few good things happen after midnight, right?? A long time ago, in (what feels like) a galaxy far, far away.

  • @BShark I’m a rationalizer. I blow smoke up my butt on some of these players. I accept it as an occupational hazard.

  • @HighEliteMajor “…but we’ve all probably had a few good things happen after midnight, right??”

When I was a parent with kids at home, that was precisely the set of happy memories that scared the hell out of me!

  • @KUSTEVE Thing is - -do you get hazardous pay lol - – -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @HighEliteMajor What @mayjay said. Didn’t need extra bills caused by that.

  • @BShark Maxwell wasn’t puzzling at the time. He had a younger brother who was thought to be a potential late bloomer in recruiting, but he never bloomed and Maxwell moved on because of that.

Whitman is definitely the much more puzzling addition because it forced Coleby out. Colby would either be starting next to Doke or first big off the bench had he stayed. I didn’t get the Whitman transfer at the time because it meant Coleby was moving on when it appeared that Coleby was the better player. Maybe there were personal issues with Coleby that we don’t know about and he would’ve left regardless, but that’s the biggest head scratcher transfer situation of the Self era to me.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Unless you heard this from the coaching staff I’m not buying it. I think that was a narrative created by some fans. His brother was not trending as a big time recruit. If we are both just operating on opinion here, then we can just agree to disagree on this.

I’d certainly rather have Coleby over Whitman and as it turns out, nobody.

  • @brooksmd

My son was born right after midnight so I believe great things can and do happen after midnight. Perhaps I would rephrase to…the ratio of bad to good things increases dramatically after midnight.😃

Here is one that is true…there are many reasons why the Police shows up at your hone in the middle of the night…and most of them are bad.

I feel like Coleby would have had a solid Jayhawk career without that knee injury. Obviously we will never know, but he was pretty athletic before, and after the injury he was afraid to jump.

I doubt there are many stones left to turn over right now but it is unfortunate this Robinson decision really dragged. Looks like the scholarship will remain vacant. Not the worst thing in the world, if there is a high impact mid-season transfer.

@KUSTEVE It’s all good, we need a mix. The truth is often in between the overly negative and overly positive posters.

  • @BShark There might be lots of behind the scenes things playing out regarding the transfer.

  • @JayHawkFanToo "My son was born right after midnight so I believe great things can and do happen after midnight. "

Our Grandson, too, who decided to wait for 17 hours so he could be born at 1:17 a.m. on July 5. Apparently was scared by all the noise out there so he took his time.

  • mayjay said:

I know that’s why I was asking. It might have read as sarcasm but hell if I know he could be a big donor that gets to talk to the coaching staff or otherwise just has insider information on the situation. So I was curious if that’s the case or if he was speculating.

  • @BShark. That narrative was postulated by some of the recruiting experts because that was the only reason Self would’ve looked at a transfer like Maxwell in the first place. I never said Maxwell’s brother became a highly regarded recruit because he didn’t. His brother was all potential and never materialized. They gambled on the brother becoming a diamond in the rough and it didn’t pay off. Self has always been a gambler and sometimes you lose when you gamble and Self lost on the Maxwell gamble.

  • I am really surprised that some distant big player has not found his way to Lawrence to grab that waiting scholarship. Shucks, with just a little bit of big help this looks to be a Final Four squad. A rising European or South American star could immediately embellish his NBA draft potential and gain national attention by becoming a part of this ready made unit.

Lots of amateurism concerns with that route. It would be nice to get another post player on this team though, for sure.
