Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux
-
Kansas Kentucky Michigan Texas Xavier Butler Auburn Providence Tennessee Ohio State
If you suck, then you probably don’t have this many solid programs coming after you once you re-open your recruitment.
Also he shot 48% from 3 this year on a pretty high volume. Obviously it’s a big step up to D1 ball but that’s nothing to sneeze at. Looks like a solid program player if he toughs it out.
-
Im never thrilled with 3 star guys either.
For every Mason and Graham we’ve had a Royce Woolridge and Rio Adams.
-
The staff passed on pursuing Waters and is going after this kid. I find that interesting.
Royce was a really early take too, like SO year in HS early. That really hasn’t worked out much for KU (Peters, Greene, Frankamp) but hopefully Markese bucks that trend.
-
Also worth mentioning that recruiting services get pretty damn lazy when a kid is committed to a school like NCST. Considering that all his highlights are from last summer at the latest it’s possible he needs to be re-evaluated by most of the services. Not saying he is top 50, but he is probably a lower end 4*.
-
There is a big difference in recruiting after the season is over and most of the quality players are spoken for. At this time, all programs are scrambling to fill available schoolies and any available player becomes a lot more valuable and a hot commodity. Remember that KU picked up Evan Maxwell from Liberty University a couple of years ago and he was in demand because there were not many players left?
This is the list of schools on the ESPN site as of April 4…
-
…and this is the one on Rivals…
As you can see, neither is really an impressive list. Just sayin’…
-
@JayHawkFanToo Thomas Allen is ranked 81 on ESPN. Low end 4 star. A solid pickup if he can shoot as well as he did in HS and run some PG. Would be a great combo with a guy like Jacobs. And HCBS obviously likes running two points if he can.
-
Garret played PG in HS and would make a decent PG considering he is now 6’-7" ,averaged almost a triple double for the season and is considered one of the top dunkers in Texas, so he is obviously pretty athletic.
-
@JayHawkFanToo In some of the videos I’ve seen he looks like he is oozing with potential.
-
He’s a take if we are filling out the roster which is hopefully what this is potentially.
Excellent shooter, that is his calling card. Most highlights you will see him filling it up from the perimeter. He might be a 3 star on paper but Allen has always had a rep as one of the best shooters in his class.
Being from the Northeast and knowing some people that have gone to Brewster I asked about him. They both said he could play at Kansas but it will depend on how much he develops his body and point guard skills. As @BShark said he shot 48% from 3 on a large volume of shots. My one friend said he’s the best shooter to come out of Brewster in memory. He also said he has a good mid-range game and grew a couple inches this year alone. They both said he’s ranked about where he should be but that in the right system would be a solid player by Jr year if developed right. My other buddy said think Tyrel Reed for KU comparison.
Our track record with Brewster kids is pretty darn good. He was part of an undefeated squad this season. Brewster has a great coach and he makes them play both ends.
Wasn’t asked to play point guard much because they had Makai Ashton-Langford a top 30 prospect that just de-committed from UCONN.
If you look at our roster and assume all our guards return we have the potential to lose up to 4 of them after next season. Graham & Svi to graduation, Vick & Newman will most likely be testing the draft process. I’m not saying all 4 are gone but Vick/Newman will have plenty of chances to show they are NBA ready next season. Having another guard developing with Garrett & Cunliffe seems like a great thing to be planning for.
We’ll see if he ends up here.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I’m just afraid that Garret may have literally grown out of that spot. Being 6’7 and spending two years with Hudy will probably make him more of a 2 or 3.
And, worse case scenario, we are adding a phenomenal practice body (compared to some of the walk-ons we’ve had lately) and a sharpshooter for some offensive spark on occasion. Well worth a 12th or 13th scholarship.
-
Who are we in on in the 2018 class? I don’t expect us to get Bagley, Langford or Zion. Only names I’ve heard are Grimes and Dotson. Haven’t heard good things about post players and we need some of those.
-
You can count on ESPN and Rivals being dead wrong frequently. And yes you are accessing the site now, but they are extremely lazy and slow to update. They made sure to get Kansas in there because it’s all over and he is probably ending up here. The list I cited comes from a guy involved in the North Carolina recruiting scene (where Allen is from).
Evan Maxwell was not in demand. Why Self took him is a mystery, and unsurprisingly both parties quickly moved on. This is absolutely not the guard equivalent of Evan Maxwell who was LOOKING TO TRANSFER TO DIVISION 2 BEFORE KU CAME ALONG.

Yep it’s not complicated we need another smaller ball handling guard that can get the ball up against pressure in case of injury/emergency. We were an injury away from TBONE this year, I’m sure that’s been in the back of the mind of the coaching staff.
Yeah Garrett is not a PG. Per Bham/MS the staff views him as a 2/3 with very good handling and passing ability for that position. But NOT a PG.

Grimes and Dotson are the names right now. Seriously. We will find out more on post targets later. I fully expect Gordon to decommit from SLU and for KU to quickly get back involved there, but that has to actually happen before we will hear anything about it.
-
Not sure the staff has really dived into 2018 outside of the guys you mentioned.
Some bigs to keep an eye on that have mentioned KU before:
Emmitt Williams #22, Sim Shittu, #7, Silvio De Sousa #12. David McCormack #43
Self will likely follow Bagley & Zion as long as they both consider KU. They are game changers.
-
Worst case scenario Allen is the 5th guard this year behind Newman, Vick, Garrett and Cunliffe. And in that scenario he would get spot minutes. I think it’s much more likely he is the 7th guard however.
Oh and that best shooter in recent memory comment is promising considering Graham was at Brewster and is a damn fine shooter!
-
Bagley would be the best player KU has had since Danny and/or Paul imo. I’d pee myself if he picks KU.
-
Definitely, we’ll see how it shakes out
-
I asked him the same question. He said at times Allen was automatic this season for Brewster and was a key part of why they went undefeated. Said you just can’t leave him open at all.
My friend lives in the area of Brewster and likes to attend the games because they field a D-1 starting 5 almost every year. He sat in the area of NC St coaches and would hear they were really high on him as a future combo guard
-
Good point about Bagley, pretty sure you’d have to pee over Zion as well. If Barrett joins 2018, there are 3 legitimate NBA prospects there
-
I can’t fathom Bagley, Zion and Barrett being on the same college team.
-
I am not trying to be a contrarian and as I indicated really don’t know much about him but I take it that he is projected to be a solid 4 year player but not necessarily an immediate contributor?
This is what I read about Garret:
"The 6-7 senior guard nearly averaged a triple-double for the season, finishing at 17.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game while leading Skyline to the Class 6A state semifinals. He recorded 12 triple-doubles and 32 double-doubles in 36 games as Skyline (34-2) reached the state tournament for the first time in school history."
These are Russel Westbrooke like numbers. A player that can dish out that many assists has the potential to be at least a serviceable PG, don’t you think? I am not saying that he would be the primary PG but he could be a very good option as the backup PG.
-
I really like Garrett and his future at KU but I doubt he plays PG for KU.
-
@JayHawkFanToo New position in the offing: PC (Point Combo)
-
@BigBad Maybe – Maybe not - - I think I’ll keep my trust in Coach Self and gang. they seem to know what their doing. - -Good 3-4 year player wouldn’t hurt. - - -we picked up two predictions off that WONDERFUL CB lol. - - we shall see. I hope he can contribute some and that we are just not taking bodies for this year to fill roster. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Just got to chuckle. - - Iowa State fans about ready to wet themselves, They are SO AFRAID that Juiston is KU’s to lose- they want him REALLY BAD. - - They are in panic mode because of all the re-tweets that Shakur is putting out from KU hoops lol. - -Sorry I just have to chuckle. , Talking about how they can’t compete with HOF coach and such - - and then another has to add - Oh we can’t compete with Sweet Sixteens and early exits lmao - -Comical - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Marcus Evans visiting KU https://twitter.com/coreyevans_10/status/849626737780690944
See you soon, Bill https://twitter.com/nolimitbill/status/849362291707580416
Wonder if some coaches are still trying to pry away Markese, but he seems committed https://twitter.com/markese_24/status/849348478723600388
-
Twitter, cyfan, real life? They should be nervous though, I’m thinking Juiston ends up at KU.
-
Didn’t expect that one even though he mentioned KU with interest…
-
If Evans and Allen commit, someone is leaving early. Can’t see having 8 guards (Graham, Svi, Vick, Garrett, Cunliffe, Newman, Evans, Allen) on the roster even if one is sitting out due to transfer rules.
-
@BShark Me too I’m starting to believe that he will too. I think Juiston would be a pretty good commit for us, - -I’ve seen several hi-lights of him and to me looks pretty athletic - jumps well just looks like an athlete seems like he runs the floor well. - - - -Would be quality to have him and Allen, Which it’s looking more and more like Allen is coming and then to Juiston , quality recruits. A solid recruiting year - -not a Great recruiting year if those two commit then I think we would still have one right? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@BShark I saw a tweet from Markese with all my other little wonderful E-Mails I get anyways he surposedly tweeted out - - " I’M A KANSASA JAYHAWK " - -so ya naybe I’m sure other Coaches stil after him, he just letting them know. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@BShark I’m just not feeling Evans. I think we have more then enough sufficient in our back court - -I’m more concerned we not getting our front court issues filled - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
I’m thinking it means Graham is gone if the staff takes two more guards. Evans isn’t for next year though, he has to sit a year. And after next season even if Graham and Svi are back this year, we could be looking at just Garrett and Cunliffe being back as Newman will undoubtedly test the waters and Vick probably will too if he has the year I think he will.
As for Juiston, he is the kind of player Self loves. Firmly believe that he is a take and if he chooses to go elsewhere it’s not because KU backed off barring something INSANE like Bagley reclassing and picking KU…
-
I believe it will all work out
I think the Evans move is more for Newman/Vick not being around after next season. I’m sure the staff feels both could be in the NBA if they have good years. It may also be very beneficial to have an experienced guard to go with whatever 2018 kids we potentially get.
Evans would be a fantastic sit out transfer. Kid can score.
-
Yeah I know it’s been awhile, but I seem to recall the last attack mode guard (Evans shoots about 7 fts a game) that was from Virginia and played for KU was pretty good…
-
@BShark I think at this point it is a “take what you can get” move. If we don’t see much that can help us this year, it is time to start thinking about the next year. No sense in letting a guy who can really play go just because it means we have 8 guards. Especially with the shift in basketball away from size. Maybe Bill is just buying into the 4 guard lineup because it is easier to land guards than post players. At least that is what it has felt like lately…
-
I just see a guard really not wanting to come here when there are that many but we will see.
Updates from Matt Scott: VCU is heavily involved with Evans (not a surprise) and KU has reached out to Blake Harris with Michigan State also involved there.
-
I’m liking Evans the more I watch. Really quick, gets in the lane at will.
-
He also said Evans is not visiting this weekend. VCU being from his home state and hiring his coach will be tough to beat. His teammate who’s a grad transfer visits OU this weekend. I think OU will land him
-

-
Ah yeah he just edited that in. I agree he probably ends up at VCU. He is a good player but all things being equal I would prefer a HS player, since they could transfer w/o penalty if things don’t work out or if need be due to KU hopefully getting Dotson + Grimes in 18 and being well positioned in 19 as well with Jacobs already on board.
Either way I don’t really have a problem with what the staff decides on this one.
-
Evans could definitely play at KU but I also feel the same about Harris. I think all of this confirms that Duval has told the staff no-no
-
Graham + Harris + Dotson + Allen. KU = North Carolina midwest.
@BeddieKU23 said:

Seems like a definite take-away from all this action.
-
That said, I think Harris wants to go somewhere where he can play next year. If Graham returns KU is not that place. Allen seems like the kind of kid that would be okay with a developmental year, but I could be wrong about that. I think Dotson and Grimes are definite takes next year if they would choose KU.
-
@brooksmd Classic hi-lo needs face-up midrange capable bigs, who are also athletic. This is where Bragg’s ineptness totally F’d up the scheme, as did Doke’s freak ligament tear. I pity Bragg: how many ways does he have to try to convince us “I’m not Perry Ellis, waa, waa”. Ok, Carlton, but then please explain how you ended up in the McDAA Game? Preston may take his spot, although he cant shoot either. Yes, it was painfully TIME for Lucas to go…but the hi-lo is in shambles, and will take time and recruiting actual skill to fix. Bragg xsfers, as Lightfoot alrdy had a better nose for ball, just needed to get stronger. He could be a Wiscy type player for us.
Our best hope next season in the post is that we actually have some medium-skilled size DEPTH. We’ll use them very much like Izzo bigs, as thats what they are. Bruisers, rebounders. They’ll have to prove they’re better than that. Lucas was barely serviceable, plateaued Feb.2016.
-
The Lawson brothers are transferring from Memphis. Dedric is reaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllly good.
-
@BShark Did KU recruit these kids out of high school? I could not find anything about us giving them an offer.
-
I don’t think so. They are from Memphis and Memphis hired their dad. Not sure if KU takes a look here but Dedric is really good and they have a little brother that will be a 5* in 2019.
-
@ralster Wow, you went back aways to find my post. Thanks, I appreciate your info.
