THE EVOLUTION OF THE TERM "ANTI" AND IT'S USE BY BUCKETEERS.

  • Participating in the game thread last night I noticed some new members of the Sect, commonly known as the “Anti’s.” It began with HEM, then such folks as elpoyo and KUinLA. All of these folks are true Jayhawk fans that often share a view that concentrates on the on-going negatives of the team that predicts gloom and doom and the ultimate early exit at the end of the season. Usually these comments bring an expected reaction from others labeling the “anti’s” as Debbie Downers. There has to be some joy in beating ISU in the most hateful environment of college basketball. Some comments are clever and true. Most of the negatives are truths which we already know. I myself said last year that Carlton could never be a replacement for Perry. Last night I saw a tremendous positive from Carlton when he accepted that he was a backup and just did what someone with his talent and height could achieve. Frank and the whole team could be better, but right now Frank is the best and our team is pretty good. A clever comment on twitter was that our 18 turnovers is equal to 45 in UWV dollars. I compare an anti to an audience member in a comedy club saying “That’s Funny” instead of laughing. The difference between these two forces could be explained using one play from last night. Josh had a stupid turnover which started an ISU breakaway. Josh started 10 feet behind him and came up with the block of the season. Do you comment on the turnover or the block. Hilton has the toughest, meanest, foul mouth fans in the country, and I really, really enjoyed the victory last night. I didn’t enjoy the turnovers but I loved the rebounding. Life is too hard not to allow yourself to enjoy 16 straight victories.

    well said!

    I am anti anti. 😇

I now call that play a “blurnover” so I can keep an even keel during the game. It’s extremely therapeutic.

  • I think I’m in between pure negative and sunshine pumper, I think.

  • @wrwlumpy

    Everything in context.

You have to view both the positives and the negatives.

    Let’s take @tis4tim’s blurnover.

If you focus only on the negative (the turnover) then you are upset that Josh made a lazy offensive play that cost us a possession, and could have cost us points. That’s bad.

If you focus only on the positive, then you are ecstatic that Josh made an athletic play that less than 10 D1 players could have made.

    I look at both.

Josh made a bad play offensively and got a bad turnover as a result. The positive (before even considering the block) is that Josh sprinted to the other end and made the play.

To me, that means that Josh will still make some mistakes, but we are better off letting him play through those mistakes because his talent will allow him to overcome some of those mistakes, and he plays so hard that he will make up for it, sometimes immediately.

The downside is that sometimes Josh tries a little too hard to immediately make up for a mistake and instead compounds it with a silly foul or getting himself out of position somewhere else.

  • The glass half empty or the glass half full. At my age, I’m thankful for what’s left in the glass.

  • I have no problem with people saying what they see. I’m a realist if I think we are going to lose I’ll say so. If I see an issue in our play I’ll say it, I rather be that way then some that think we will win every game every year, which flatout wont happen. I remember shortly after joining this website I nearly quit because I was insulted for saying WSU would kick our butts and they did. Most people on that called me names and a troll never apologized for it (don’t care at this point). But expect me to call it like I see it negative or positive (usually I have several for both lol).

  • @kjayhawks yes, we all want to win every game. but we need to do our part to accomplish that. just for what ifs, if we were playing wvu last night, it would have been ugly. i don’t see anything wrong with us expecting the best from our guys. they will have bad plays and bad days, but that’s why its a team sport to help compensate with that.

  • @BShark

Did last night move the needle any closer to Sunshine Pumper?

  • “Anti?”

Reminds me of my college days. Does the term “anti panties” ring a bell for anyone? Remember panty raids?

But seriously… I’m not always thrilled to read the antis comments… but I’m glad they are around and often they spark positive responses. We really don’t want KUBuckets to just become another “rah rah” website. And if we start filtering out those on the far end of the “antis” eventually the line will continue to move and then no one will be able to say anything even slightly negative or controversial.

We are all adults in here… (I guess)… so we have to be able to deal with differing opinions. I believe I get some therapy out of this site. The media/internet world today is all about people hanging out only with people that think the same way. That is very harmful (as we see it play out in our national politics). KUBuckets helps me. It is an exercise for me to try to keep my mind open and not just lash out at those I disagree with.

Obviously… I have a lot more therapy to go but I’m working on it!

  • @autohawk agreed, thats what i was getting at

  • @BeddieKU23

For this particular team not really. Winning in Ames is nice though. If the team wins in Morgantown or Lexington I will be all-in.

  • @BShark same here. I love shutting up the cryclones, but is that the goal of the season? For them beating us is their championship, but we have much bigger goals that somewhat pertain to a particularly large city in Arizona. I am not going to buy some pom poms and parade down Massachusetts Street yelling Rock Chalk after we beat K State and Iowa State. Those wins, at least to me, are expected with a talented and veteran team that has a hall of fame coach on the sidelines.

Well said, good sir… Whether glass half full or half empty perspectives, for the most part the folks that participate on this board are passionate about Kansas basketball and very much want the team to do well. To the extent that someone might come off as more critical or Pollyannaish, it’s mostly around the margins (sure, there are some that seemingly like to provoke just for the sake of it, but that’s okay, too).

Some of what might be characterized as the “anti” comments maybe more of a function of results in the moment relative to extraordinarily high expectations; expectations that are the residue of extraordinary success over the past 3 decades (and beyond).

I don’t know if I find the site to be therapeutic as do you, but it is often informative and occasionally quite entertaining. I appreciate @Crimsonorblue22 posting links to stories I wouldn’t otherwise have seen - @wrwlumpy’s wonderful pix from opponents’s campuses - and, those rats who take the time to troll recruiting sites and report back the latest gossip. I welcome commentary, whether it might be characterized as negative or positive, to the extent that it is supported by data and/or thoughtful analysis and insight. What I do find to be quite tiresome is frequent bloviation wholly unsupported by any kind of fact or data, but, hey, people are entitled to their self-important aggrandizing and I or anyone else can choose to ignore it or not.

The bottom line is that we can choose to be a spectator or participant in the site - and, to the extent it no longer fulfills some need, then one can move on. For better or worse, I’m sticking around for a while…

Don’t we call it now going commando? 😃

  • @wrwlumpy @jaybate-1.0 great comments. it’s a lot easier to be a naysayer and sound smart.

  • @DCHawker

    Well said

You forgot to mention the occasional poster who rarely makes a peep, but when does he/she leaves many of us wanting more and asking, “why not post more often?” (hint)

But seriously… often times I feel like a ball hog… a gunner. Posting too much because I’m feeling “the uncomfortable silence.”

I post a lot, though I’d rather be reading others.

There are so many knowledgeable, creative fans in here… many have never posted.

Sometimes I fear there is that one infinitely-knowledgeable fan who is keeping tabs on me and someday is going to post a book in here, footnoting all my obvious flaws and eloquently dismissing my theories. Yikes… what if it is Bill Self!

I guess that wouldn’t be a bad thing; to be demoted for having a lesser basketball mind than Bill. I guess I should mostly fear it would be John Calipari!

  • @jaybate-1.0 Now, jaybate, as head of the JNS, you dont need me to tell you that you need to remain impartial and unbiased, in true journalistic fashion…

  • Jesse was mushing antis on Soren’s show today.

  • @BShark “mushing anti’s”?

Please elaborate for those of us outside the listening area.

  • @ralster What is this thing you speak of called “impartial, unbiased journalism” and where might I find some?

  • @Bwag

He was saying the team is really good so people shouldn’t be complaining but they are because the team isn’t good in the same way that we are accustomed to Self teams being good. That was the gist of it anyway.

  • @BShark thanks
