All the DP detractors might look back at him more fondly as less productive millionaire freshmen follow.

We will always wonder what if he was healthy or just shut it down. I think both scenarios may have been shown better results unfortunately. I still have big question marks on how he will be at the next level. Hes not Cooper Flagg or even close to him IMO. Give me a freshman that is able to play all year and make the team around him better over DP all day everyday.

I personally don’t see Reeves starting at least not from day one anyways. But I also don’t see Kohl coming off the bench at all. Give him an offseason in the gym and he will be tough to keep out of the line up.

Mel coming back would be huge. Kinney wouldn’t have to start that way. He could be a very valuable 6th man.

          Meh.

I am grateful for this time at KU, but historically it seems we could and should do better than Melvin as a starter.

He’d be better than freshman Kinney IMO

I agree to an extent, Mel had his games where he was simply amazing but he was just wildly inconsistent which maybe chalked up to his inexperience at this level of college. It stank to see how badly him and Tre struggled in the post season. I’d still be happy to have him back just don’t think it will happen.

I can’t say I know much yet about Kinney. But, I was hoping a portal transfer would take over.

              Not high hopes for Kinney?

He’s fine, just more of an inefficient scorer who hasn’t quite figured out the PG position yet.

Melvin coming back would make him the instant leader of this team and his attitude, work ethic, and passion for KU would be way more valuable than anything on the court, which would still be pretty high because he would likely be KU's leading scorer next season if he were able to gain another year of eligibility.

@Jayhawk_69 Where did you hear this? Sorry to pick on you,, but these types of comments drive me crazy.* People here are constantly referring to things they heard, but it would be helpful to be able to evaluate the credibility by knowing the source. "I heard from a guy who is close friends with a player..." might be worth more attention than "I heard a caller on a talk radio show..." For people like me who have no access to local sources, it is impossible to separate wheat from chaff. (Okay, husk from kernel for gluten sensitives.)

Based on your comment, I literally could go tell people that I read somewhere that Mel entered the portal. That makes passing the rumor on sound actually more authoritative, yet it would be of no actual additional substance!

*Edit: Obviously, it is a shorter and shorter drive to crazy as time goes by....

He’s just keeping options open on the off chance that court case gets him an extra year of eligibility and KU has already filled its roster.

Reeves was visiting Michigan State. However, Michigan St just landed Bonke.

I don’t see us competing for a championship with Kinney at PG, but maybe he’s better than what I’ve watched.

@Kcmatt7 Mel would definitely be a better option at PG in the unlikely scenario he can come back.

@Jayhawk_69 Some of the bigs who have committed elsewhere:
                                      Flory
                                      Estrella
                                      Sherrell
                                      Cyril
                                      Sylla
                                      Hines
                                      Yigitoglu
                                      Fru
                                      Fielder
                                      Riebe
                                      Bonke

Only guys remaining guys at this point are Diop, Thiam, and Reeves; the first two who would be very costly.

We used to be big man U. Could we not afford any of these others guys, or they just didn't want to play at KU?

The good news is that Diop and Thiam are by far the best bigs in the portal. The bad news is we probably won't land either.

I thought Stokes might announce today. If he announces between tomorrow and Saturday he would have to share his sports media attention with the NFL draft. Perhaps he will announce next week.
