  @AsadZ - My point was not to bag on Tharpe, more to just analyze what we have and hit on some areas that Tharpe is perhaps lacking. A discussion point. I appreciate your point of view on Tharpe. I do believe that Mason is a better point guard than Tharpe if shooting were removed from the equation. But his shooting a huge deal for this team, and that “if” is like saying that Kansas would be just another basketball program if it didn’t have all that history. The shooting is maybe the most important add that this team has experienced since it’s Nov/Dec travails. I am perfectly content with our two headed monster. And really, every player south of Lebron has his flaws. But then you had to go and say “enjoy the ride” …

  I have a lot of respect for Frank Martin. He is a very different person outside the court, and one that deeply cares about his players. Also, he has always been very respectful of the KU basketball program and its history; I wish he would have stayed at KSU. Once all the players he inherited are gone and following tradition, Bruce Weber will drive the KSU program into oblivion…hopefully it starts this coming Monday.

  @DinarHawk It was one of those games when Kansas State could do no wrong and Texas could do no right. One played well above its average and the other well below. It happens. Hopefully KSU cools off over the weekend, otherwise it could a looooong game.

  @ralster I have never heard Self say that a loss to WSU would hurt our recruiting. Not saying he hasn’t said that, but the line I’ve heard most often is that he doesn’t want to give away a home game every other year because home games are how they fund the athletic department. Saw this in an interview done by local news here in Wichita when one of the channels started broadcasting their early season games that year, and have heard it a couple of other times since. And this is how I have finally gained some traction with WSU fans and got them to come off the “KU is scared to play us”, at least a little bit. A week ago or so, also on a local news report, there was a story about how WSU’s Final Four run last year actually cost the university millions (that was the teaser anyway. I only half watched the piece, and I don’t remember if they factored in merchandising and whatnot after the fact). Many might recall last year how Florida Gulf Coast was having a hard time with funds to travel on the second weekend of the tournament. Given this story, WSU fans were able to see how thin the line is for not ending up in the red for the non-football powerhouse schools.

  Liked Jay Bilas comment…echoes my own that unlike MOST lotto level guys, a 7ftr as smooth and agile and bright as Joel Embiid would still be a rare, hot commodity in any season’s draft. Just dont see guys like him. If McLemore stayed, he’d have to face Wiggins, Harrison’s, Parker, etc…But no such logjam or yearly crapshoot regarding agile 7footers. Is there anybody on the horizon to challenge Embiid? What is crystal clear is that Embiid needs to learn a lot, including the mental mindset needed to defeat the pounding he is taking, and the nonsensical nature of the officiating, which will always exist, and one needs to learn to manage it. Equally clear, is that Embiid is a 18-19yr old body, which only begs what can a real pro like Hudy, along with Father Time do for his physique (& thus career longevity) by allowing physical development time, so as not to get devoured by the bigger, meaner lions found in the NBA ranks…

  I love this topic! Enjoy everyone’s posts. It’s so hard for me to understand how you can play and not be competitive ! All of my family is and in everything. Working w/kids at all levels trying to teach them to value ball is always important. I tell them it’s like a million bucks . During practice I toss the ball out at random times and we always have them dive on it. If they are playing d and aren’t watching the ball I toss it out, not at them. Ball is more important than man. Man can’t score w/out ball. I also walk around and try to knock the ball away from them when they are not looking. If I do, it’s push-ups. Post game is always about d, we give defensive stats, charges get candy, most floor burns get candy or whatever, Gatorade. I really think you can teach kids to be competitive. Some of the kids we had played juco and d1 ball. Fun times!

  @drgnslayr this is really becoming my favorite thread of anywhere, so hats off you, kind sir. Naadir flat smoked them, and maybe I saw a different player I had never seen before. I wasn’t quite sure that I was actually watching Naadir. And Jimmy Dykes is going on about Naadir being the best shooting point guard KU has ever had. I keep thinking - this is Naadir. He was so amazingly smooth, poetry in motion. I am watching a star being born, one that I never saw coming. He wasn’t just busting the zone, he was creating his own shots, and burying it. So, I get to looking back at Naadir’s stats, and he is like 15 for his last 23 from the 3. And I’m thinking… it’s time to give that kid the green light. We’ve all been waiting for Coach to get Greene, Francamp, and/or White more minutes to develop our 3 point game, and it was there all the time. I think that Wiggins had the biggest breakthrough, and will never be the same after the Baylor game. You could tell he was a little uptight the whole first half, until he launches the 3/4 quarter heave that found its way in. In the 2nd half, he gets a steal, goes on a runout,gets a lob, and finally nails a jumpshot or two. What was amazing was watching him not look distressed whatsoever coming out 2nd half after going 1 for 9. Mentally, he didn’t look down at all. I think his mental game is coming around, which will highly accelerate what we see on the court. The best is yet to come…

  Man, its just difficult to wrapping my mind around the fact that Smart admitted publicly to flopping! As Self said, “tape doesnt lie”. Everybody in the nation saw the whiff by Selden’s elbow, and the FlopSeenAroundTheESPNworld. Now the refs are on to his theatrics. Part of me wants to like Smart, as Self tried to recruit him, but no, Smart chooses elsewhere…why? Play with friend Phil is a lame reason, if I ever heard one. I think Smart’s deep down dirty secret is that he is not tough enough for Bill Self. That’s why he didnt come. Self sees and wants real toughness. Look, fellow Jayhawks, Smart had a good game against us in AFH last year. But he had an awful game at Stillwater, after getting decked by Kevin Young. And nothing but cheating attempts (what flops are). Self wants the real deal. Smart will have a rude awakening in the NBA. Hope for his sake he is still in the lottery. Unfortunately, as Baylor (of all teams) was beating OkieSt in Stillwater, the announcers were pointing out all the holes in Smart’s game. 3pt shooting woes is a major theme right now with Smart. Decision-making, poor shot selection, poor shot timing. Smart is lackluster-playing himself down out of the lottery, possibly. His one claim to fame is his nose for the ball, and his physique. He is not using his physique correctly. Someone his size going down from a whiffed elbow is just plain w-e-a-k. Hope for his sake he can turn around the national perception. Just for grins, compare Tarik Black getting hit in the face by a thrown basketball, compared to Smart’s flop to either no-contact or a slight graze by Selden’s elbow. Now consider the reaction by Black (nothing but a grin, and a “dang it I could have intercepted it” gesture), and the reaction (flop) by Smart. Point is BigBlack got hit 10times harder in the face than Smart thought he was. As Self says, “tape doesnt lie”. Tarik Black is a tough player.
