I think Grimes had to get to this low in order for Self to pick him back up. Whatever frustrations he had last night I’m sure are self inflicted from not doing what he knows he’s capable of. I have a hard time believing its something else. He just looks like he’s having a hard time under pressure and living up to expectations from himself, his coaches, his family and friends. We forget these kids are young, Q is only 18. I have been hard on him but its because I know he’s capable of more. I was hard on Vick last season and Selden the season before that for the same reasons.
The sad part is that when the guy said he would take care of it for me – he did – and even though i called days before the start of the new month – he didn’t cancel me til the end of the NEXT month. Total B.S. Rip off city. I decided it wasn’t worth the $5 to call back and deal with it again. Pissed though.
Mayjay, i did try those instructions you offered, as well as many other options, before even seeing them from you. no luck. Apparently since i ordered through my Android TV app, that complicated matters somehow. A mystery wrapped in an enigma.
So, in theory the saga is over. We’ll find out next month for sure though…stay tuned!
@Texas-Hawk-10 I appreciate this perspective. While Devonte struggled to produce against Oregon, going 0-7, he shot 9-18 the following year in our loss to Villanova. This (the Oregon game) I think clouds my judgement of Devonte’s ability to defer, but you are right that Devonte was comfortable in a leadership role.
I forgot how good Devonte was against Villanova. It was not Devontes fault we didn’t win a ring his senior year.
@BShark I think our crappy play is more a team effort, but 7 turnovers when you play off the ball is pretty hard to explain. I keep thinking KJ is sitting over on the bench, and the few minutes he got ( except for that stupid behind the back pass on the fast break ) were better than what Vick played the whole game. Vick is not a hero, and I think him trying to be one hurts more than it helps.
I mentioned earlier in this thread. - -just curious I know might be insane but at this point it might also help some too. - -Start McCormack at the 5 - -like HEM mentioned and I totally agree with , but I was thinking with Vick in one of his swoons - not being seen on the floor doing his disappearing act yet again - -Ok so everyone say Garrett is an offensive liability - -so at least for the moment - let’s start KJ - -he was decent at Memphis can score - -at least keep the opponents honest - have to play us 5-5 - -instead of them sagging with Garrett on the Floor Bring Vick in to back up KJ - for right now anyways - -maybe Vick be more inspired coming off the bench - -start KJ at the 3 - -Have Garret come of the bench to back up Dotson & Grimes - at this point couldn’t hurt - -I know he is more of an offensive threat then Marcus - -he rebounds the ball decent - so he gives us more height - -more rebounding and can score better then Marcus - -what ya think? - I know it’s not the pemament solution but hell can’t hurt and try
@Kcmatt7 I think you have the right perspective. We’re going to have to show patience. The fact we run two different offenses depending on whether Doke is in the lineup is probably slowing the learning curve down for the newcomers.
@Gunman The women only lost by single digits 3 times last year in Big 12 play and one of those was a 9 point loss. Washington’s injury didn’t have that big an impact on their record. 10 of their losses were 15+ points with several by 30+. You’re kidding yourself if think Jessica Washington’s injury would’ve made a significant difference in KU’s record last year. 3 wins at best is what she probably would’ve changed, probably 2, which still is a crappy season.
I put this in the game thread, but wanted to mention it here as well. KU can’t play a lineup with Doke, Garrett and Lawson all on the floor together. Garrett’s man sagging off him really clogs the floor up in that lineup. Garrett has to play when either Lawson or Doke is the lone big on the floor.
So you’re saying Garrett is a 4, basically. I agree.
KU needs to run more PnR with Doke, and less straight post ups. Doke is improving as a passer, but he isn’t to the point where he can pick out open guys against the grain of the defense. I’m not saying KU should never post Doke up. Just it should be limited to a handful of times per game at most.
I think it may serve us better to let Doke continue to have a gravitational pull and teach him to become a better passer than try to teach him to be a good PnR big at this point. I worry about moving screens and him being able to catch the ball on the move like that. I think we can get him to the point where he throws the right pass.
KU should invert its offense every now and then and post up Grimes. I’ve noticed the last few games that Grimes, when he gets a smaller player on him, will go to the post and call for the basketball. Because Lawson is so skilled, that’s a great opportunity to invert the offense and let Lawson play on the perimeter while Grimes goes to the block. KU could force some teams out of their rotation if they were to do that more.
This is spot on.
KU may even want to think about posting Garrett against smaller players, then letting him turn and face up guys on the extended post. It’s a way to allow him to challenge the defense without needing an improved jumper.
This is also spot on.
When KJ Lawson plays, he needs to play with Dedric, and needs to play inside while Dedric plays high. His jumper has been shaky, but I think if he plays a token 5 spot and uses his quickness, he can be a MUA on the offensive glass, or force a bigger, slower player away from the basket to guard Dedric, who has been destroying guys like that on the dribble drive.
KJ should really just not play, imo. He can’t score. He can’t really defend. He doesn’t really box out. He just isn’t very good. Just keep subbing in Big Dave or go 4 out with Garrett.
Charlie Moore should play off the ball as a shooter rather than as a PG. He’s too erratic with his handling, and too prone to look for his own shot to run the point on this team. Move him off the ball so he can look for his own shot.
Chuckie should really see a minutes reduction. He is bad. Self didn’t even put him in a point when Dotson was in foul trouble at one point. So I think he agrees with your statement. I would bet come March, CM will be lucky to see 5 mpg.
We need to see more PnR action overall. Grimes and Dotson should both be getting into the PnR with D. Lawson and Azubuike. We aren’t see this enough and that could create some huge mismatches to exploit. We could even see some creativity with a D. Lawson/Grimes PnR with Grimes as the screener to allow Dedric to get moving against a smaller defender. You will often see Golden State run that action with Thompson and Draymond Green or Kevin Durant. It’s deadly because if those guys get a half step on their bigger defender on a non switch, they get a layup. If they get a switch, they can bully a smaller guy inside. Leave Thompson and he can hit a three or drive on a late closeout. Obviously Grimes isn’t the shooter Thompson is, but that action could create a lot of decisions that college defenses may not be able to execute.
I’d love to see Dotson and Lawson develop a PnR game together. Dotson’s speed and Lawson’s versatility offer the best combo imo. A Tyshawn/T-Rob like combo that at times was unstoppable.
We definitely need to find a way to score more efficiently though. Either through different offensive sets or better shooting. The pieces are there. I’m sure Self has a plan.
@BeddieKU23 He had a couple lazy passes that resulted in OU runouts.
Sorry I missed your comment about his passes. I counted 3 of them last night that were bonehead plays. Vick is who he is. I remember after one bad pass he canned a 3 on the next possession. He could definitely be less careless with the ball
I apologize to Doke. I had this thought when he got hurt that perhaps we might be better overall without him in the lineup. Wrong. This team has to play with two bigs to be at its best offensively as Self mentioned. SDS might alter that thinking. But right now, there is not doubt. Hi/Lo, bingo. Excellent thread.
A couple decades ago I had a roommate who was big into soccer. Even with his day to day excitement about the sport I still couldn’t muster the least bit of interest. It’s like a more boring version of hockey without fights and I don’t like hockey. Nah I’ll stick to KU basketball year round.
