@HighEliteMajor I think that it is a very debatable question. I would stay with Self if we had the option for Beard to come in tomorrow. That being said I would hope if Self leaves in the near future, that Beard is Longs first phone call, at least at this moment. The question is can Beard keep Tech at the top? He has flipped the script in Lubbock, in 3 short years and deserves a ton of credit for doing so. Self is the better option because he has kept us at the top tier of CBB, maybe even moved us up a notch by winning the NC in 2008. This past season was a let down, all we did was win 26 games, finish 3rd in the conference and make the second round of the NCAAs. There’s only about 5 maybe 6 schools that wouldn’t be okay with those results and Beard has never been at said schools. Self has probably seen and dealt with more as a head coach than Beard will for a few years. When you start winning you have to deal with more boosters, fans, and when you start recruiting and getting better players you have to deal with egos and parents as well.
@Crimsonorblue22 Zion is more likely to need the Nike surgery for when he detonates another shoe!
Wonder if ESPN will show the surgery live on all its networks?
lol, so good.
Ok, well I hope you’re right obviously. Let’s not bank on having him.
Oh yeah, I agree. I’m very happy Dave is around. He’s as good a backup as we could ask for. Also why we need bodies in general. By my count we have 4 scholarships open:
Losses: Cunliffe, Vick, Moore, Lawson, Lawson, Grimes
Gains: McBride, Braun
I don’t feel that good about going into the season with 9 dudes.
Whether we start the season with more we always seem to end up with 8 or 9
@approxinfinity The ball movement in ‘08 was phenomenal. It was a combination of ball movement and lockdown D that we haven’t seen since. I’m not sure if any of the stats correlate to ball movement, but to me that was the biggest difference.
Thanks for posting. Doke’s ability to play above the rim has a big impact on how the offense can operate. Dunks impact the game and can influence how a team responds on the other side as well. He’s the definition of an easy bucket getter. His size can defer drives to the hoops but it might also have the opposite impact as teams gameplan. You may see teams take even more perimeter shots against KU. Some games that will work for and against us.
Hopefully we hear about Silvio soon. A 4 man can thrive in this offense beside Azubuike with the right skills. TJ Holyfield is perfect for this team
Oh I agree for sure. - -We saw that against in the Villanova game. That’s a weakness for Udoka for sure , taking him out away from the basket. That within it’self is a bad spot for Udoka offensively and defensively. -I think that is a major point for him for his future in the NBA. - -The New NBA 5 is a 5 that can take it out in the open floor , and again that is not what he does - -that’s why I have my doubts about his future in the NBA.
I sure hope we hear something positive for Silvio when it’s all said and done. - -that’s another reason it would of been really sweet if we could of landed Precious - -but looking like that’s not going to happen , or as you say Holyfield. I DO think we have a pretty good shot at Holyfield - -we shall see. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
So the return of Azubuike stunts the development of David McCormack. We’ll get 4 years of Dave at least.
Still need a PF even if De Sousa returns. TJ Holyfield with his ability to stretch the floor is ideal.
Need at least 1 more perimeter player that can shoot. Tucker is the big fish to get and is the biggest need outside of a starting 4 man. Otherwise McBride is going to play a ton as a freshman. He may anyway and is a gifted scorer with the type of game this team needs. If Self picks up two perimeter players that means he doesn’t expect the freshman guards to contribute in a significant way.
With Azubuike back you can’t start Garrett. I don’t care how many shots he puts up this summer again that jumper is broken.
De Sousa and Azubuike would be the most athletic front court in the country. Not holding my breathe on that happening although its great to dream.
@BShark meant to post this yesterday; the VT faithful are starting to feel less doom and gloomy about Mike Young’s hiring as he builds his staff. Most of their recruits (and players) appear to be staying committed now. Blackshear might even stay.
I think Auriemma could handle the coaching part of the men’s game. The struggle would be the recruiting side of things. Getting guys to buy into listening to a “women’s coach” could be tough. Recruiting from that angle could be even tougher. That takes nothing away from what Auriemma has done in his career. He’s great. I just don’t know how the players would respond, or if he could get them to commit.
