  Really impressed with Svi’s ability to move his feet on defense. I think that has been the one area he’s improved the most to my eye. He’s not using his hands as much to stop a defender which he used to get called routinely for. The improved rebounding and taking better shots has made him an all around better player as others above mentioned. Keep it up young man

  I thought we played well for most of the game. The large lead we jumped out to was aided by their fumbling and bumbling around. Josh finally stayed out of foul trouble and was able to assert his presence for an entire game. The FT’s are concerning. Josh is the biggest contributor…he has been awful. Have to believe that he (and we) will improve.

  UVA gave up 38 to Yale today… Just 38. Still a stingy defense that will keep them in games. Yale had scored 98 @ Washington last week which isn’t saying much. Romar routinely gives up 90 to YMCA’s. Yale is also missing its tournament darling for the year.

  Having top ten programs in football and basketball is a lot of fun. It really covers most of the year. Hoping that someday the Jayhawks will get there in football. Tough to do however.

  @sfbahawk Good to see you back posting. I see OADs like Andrew and Josh as special cases regarding the failure to have a trey being acutely detrimental to their ability to perform in D1. Notice that Andrew Wiggins tore up the NBA as soon as he got there, even though he appeared to struggle in D1. I hypothesized that it was not that he could not score in D1, but that his handlers did not want him to risk injury by trying to hang big numbers game in and game out. Once in the NBA, the handlers had gotten paid, and Andrew was starting to draw his checks, and so it was okay for him to go ahead and be a threat every game. And the NBA reputedly tends to have its refs protect its stars and future stars, so that’s another reason a guy like Andrew could go hard every game in the NBA. The problem for Andrew, and I believe Josh, is that they face in D1 a real injury risk, if they try to go hard every game’ i.e., the defenders are going to clock him and keep clocking him. And they can do it without significant, egregious penalty, if they can hang back and clock him on the way to iron, rather than have to punch him in the face 23 from the basket. If Andrew and Josh were BenMac grade trifectates, then they could make the D1 players play them honestly and burn them on the way to iron. But without a solid trey, D1 defenders are going to punch him in the face, and put him on the floor, and upend him, as he tries to get past them laying off, and there will be a considerable probability of injury that could hurt his draft rank and shorten his earning career. As a result, the prudent thing to do is stand outside and be decoy most games. Get inside on some back doors. Have branding game against some cupcakes. And generally don’t be threat to go off…just get through the season. I believe Josh will have a few branding games. And I believe he will be a solid rotation player. And I believe next year he will fare well in the NBA. But this year in D1? He just doesn’t appear to have the trey ball to keep them honest.

  @KUSTEVE Solid post! Yes… Doke has to receive a lot of minutes this year. He really needs to see a lot of minutes in about every game. That is the only way to season him. He needs to be put in the most challenging situations, including games and situations where he may not always be our best option. Give him plenty of those minutes, and he soon will become our best option for ALL situations! It is pretty hard to keep a guy like him on the bench, especially when we are proven to have rebounding issues with this team. I agree… that Landen misses having Perry to draw attention away from him. But I see what everyone else is seeing… that Landen is SLOW in the post on his moves (so is Doke). Our guys are bringing the ball down and gathering for an eternity. Hopefully, that is being addressed and worked on. Much of that is about confidence. Some of it is about building more scoring moves and practicing them enough to where there is no long gather in practice. You mentioned that Landen is having to deal with having 3 players swarm him. Great! I would be more concerned if he didn’t even draw in a double-team and still couldn’t score. If there are 3 guys on Landen, we have 2 of our players wide open. Or, at least, they should be wide open. So far, in this young season, I see something else as causing the problems for Landen more than missing Perry… WHERE HAS OUR TREY BALL GONE? I think this is the biggest reason for the swarm on Landen. Teams are baiting us into taking treys because so far, we haven’t proven we can hit them. I think a big part of this is just getting our guys to polish their offense. I’m not too worried yet. It’s a young season and even though most of our guys were here last year, every year is a new challenge. They are still developing an effective pace. They still need to polish their spacing. They aren’t yet seeing where there opportunities really are. And after all of that which they still must learn, they then have to take their education and apply it. This is often the toughest thing to accomplish… the execution. Especially with young players caught up in the moment, but even a challenge for the veteran guys, too.

I can’t see Self going with 4 perimeter guys more than about half the time. That means Vick will be getting 10 minutes a lot of nights. He will have a chance to do some damage in a few games, but not consistently enough (barring injury). But Vick’s star is rising. He could have a big game in the tournament that puts him in the spotlight nationally, but he will probably only average 5-7 points per game on the year. Vick’s minutes by game: 28, 31, 32. Now of course Josh has had foul issues which has contributed to this but still, I think Self would rather have Vick or Svi out there over a 2nd big most of the time.

  @YellowBeak Yes, but Kansas far makes up for the lack of traditional natural wonders with a lack of humans. Less of the state is spoiled by overpopulation than most. Some would describe my town as peaceful, quiet, calm, no traffic, nice people, and few to no crowds. I would describe it to outsiders as boring, nothing to do or see, and no one to do it with. But that’s because I want city folk to remain in the city…far far away from here!
