@BShark If you had Fran muted then you missed a comment that explains much about our winning at the Octagon of Dumb. That is the fact that KSU and the fans get so pumped up to beat us that they play very tight. He claimed that not only was this the case last night but it is usually the case. Sometimes you can want something so badly that you get in your own way to get it.

Great posts again. One person you missed was Roger Sayers. He was Gale’s brother. I saw him at the 1963 NAIA track championship in Sioux Falls. He was extremely fast.

Very good information Lumpy. My only complaint is that you didn’t have my picture as one of the people from South Dakota.

RE: Several update issues
I have had problems with scrolling back past a few screens of comments when I select the last post rather than the post that starts a thread. This happens on the latest versions of Opera and Chrome. The scrolling works fine on firefox but I haven’t been using that much lately. I use Windows 7 by the way.
My only real complaint about the update is that the names of the posters no longer appears on the recent or unread pages. We do get the avatars but there are only about 8-10 or so that I can remember. Some people also change their avatars rather regularly. The times that a comment was posted also does not show up for anything less than the last day. If I am reading a long thread that I have not read for a day or two (what else could I possibly be doing with my time other that reading kubuckets) I start at the end and scroll back until I find a time that I haven’t read.
Other that the scrolling, the items I mentioned are small potatoes. Thanks approxifinity for all of your good work.

RE: Big night for Frank Mason 111-BIFM
@wrwlumpy You almost took the words out of my mouth. JoJo has always been my favorite guard at KU. Now he has been replaced by Frank. I never thought that I would see another player who was so mature both on the court and off as JoJo. Nothing ever seemed to phase him. Frank has the same type of maturity to run a team; however he has something that JoJo did not have in college and that is his ability to shoot.
Now I just hope that Frank can have the same kind of success at the next level. Frank will be a success at whatever he does because he has unbelievable drive. I don’t believe that he envisioned winning awards like he has. I do believe that his self-confidence and drive did allow him to see himself as able to play at the level that he has achieved.

RE: FRANK WINS THE OSCAR ROBINSON TROPHY!
@wrwlumpy Yep. I used to get seats on about row 5 or so since I worked in AFH. It was great when the cheer leaders kicked. It was a field house with the floor being dirt. The indoor track went around the court. The raised court was put up before the bb season and taken down afterward.

@hawkmoon2020 If she thinks KC was bad, the 1968 regional was at AFH. Unfortunately it didn’t do us enough good.

@BShark They didn’t double him to keep Lucas from scoring. They did it to keep him from easily passing the ball out to Frank, DeVonte, and Josh.

RE: Cuonzo Martin
@JayHawkFanToo Cal was never going to pay big money for a basketball coach. A lot of their potential salary is tied up paying football coaches who no longer coach at Cal. College sports and especially basketball are not that big in the bay area. The only exception is Stanford women. There are a lot of other ways for people to spend their time. The area much prefers pro sports.

RE: Bracket Reveal chat. Sneak preview
@wissox I watched the second half of the Wisconsin and Michigan game. Do the Badgers normally play like they did today? I saw no real offensive scheme. It was all dribble, dribble, dribble, pound, pound, pound. If it wasn’t their guards dribbling around outside it was the center pounding the ball to back his man down. It seemed as if the whole team had velcro on their hands.

RE: KU Just Lost to the Worst Team in Its Conference: 7-seed but where?
@jaybate-1.0 KU lost to a much lower ranked team but no matter how many times that you claim it TCU is not the worst team in the conference. That honor belongs to Texas even though they beat TT in the tournament. They were dueling it out with OU who TCU beat the previous night.
We should not have lost that game but let’s keep it real.

RE: Good read
@dylans Frequently the team with the most very good or great players is the hardest to coach. The biggest task for an NBA coach is handling egos. Handling those egos is also made more difficult because they are making a lot more money than the coach and they have guaranteed contracts. Even the most team oriented players still have to be handled correctly. That is especially true when there are a number of all stars involved. GS was only beginning to get the most out of the addition of Durant about the time he went down. It’s great to have 3 or 4 players who can score at any time, but the issue is who is handling the ball at the end of a tough game. KD was the man ever since he was at Texas. Steph has been the man the past few years. Even when they want to play team ball it is still a hard practice to break not to want or need the ball at the end. The coach has to convince everyone to buy into what he wants the people to do.
The other thing that people forget about is that the starting 5 are not the only key people. In college most teams go with 7 or 8 players getting the majority of the time. That has to go up to 9 or 10 in the NBA because not only are the games are longer but the level of competition night to night is higher than in college. Determining the best rotation of the top 9 or 10 and adjusting that because of match ups is not easy.

RE: Paging Svi!!!
@justanotherfan Speaking of great shooters running cold. Steph Curry was 0 for 11 last night against Sixers. That tied an NBA record. There is still hope for Svi.

RE: Walton and Pasch
@jayballer54 Are you aware who decides what is being on a tv set at any given time. It is not the people in front of the camera. It is the producer of the show. If ESPN had not wanted Walton changing tee shirts to be shown on the screen it would not have shown him doing that.
As mentioned earlier this is the shtick that Walton has been using for the past couple of years. I don’t like it but since I am not a member of the management team at ESPN I have no say in the matter. The only people who do are members of that team.
I have not been all that impressed by your posts but that will have to change now that you have indicated that you know that marijuana can be ingested using a bong. As far as the west coast fans are concerned more of them must be happy enough with his performance than are not happy with it. Otherwise he would not be doing anything on ESPN. That is the way that the system works
If you are as unhappy as you indicate I would suggest that you send a strongly worded letter to someone highly placed at ESPN indicating that unhappiness. If after that Bill Walton is no longer employed by ESPN we will have you to thank.
-
RE: Walton and Pasch
@Fightsongwriter He obviously did what ESPN wanted him to do. It wasn’t Walton who showed full screen shots of him and Pasch throughout the game. It wasn’t Walton who went split screen for about 25% of the game. If I were to fire anybody it would be the producer of the broadcast. But don’t count on that to happen. Walton’s shtick is to be a drugged out dead head. Vitale’s job is to be an over the top rambler. If ESPN didn’t like or require them to do what they do it wouldn’t pay them to do it and it wouldn’t show it.
I did notice that about 6-8 times during the broadcast Walton made very astute comments on specific plays and players. Unfortunately that was only a small percentage of the time.
I thought that he was a bit over the top in his praise of KU. Think about how Texas fans must feel. He basically called them out of shape and a poor example of a basketball team. I’m sure that is mooing must have gone down real well (NOT) for those fans.

RE: THE FAMOUS LANDON LUCAS SCREEN.
@drgnslayr I have no problem with Beard. Self seems to like him and he didn’t really bitch after the game even though he seemed to think that the screen was illegal but he didn’t have a real good look. What I did find a bit funny is that he indicated that they thought they would get that pick after our timeout and then they called a timeout to counter it and he told his player to play it tough. In his presser Self indicated that during the TT timeout he actually changed the play because he didn’t like what he had called. It would have taken too much time. What Beard thought he saw wasn’t what he got.

RE: This late in the season, Is there a fix for bad free throw shooting?
It must be something in the water. Or maybe the walk up Mt Oread takes it out of everyone’s legs. I remember Cedric Hunter in the mid 80s. A very good point guard who shot at about 50%. Even watching NBA games, if a shooter clanks a couple my wife asks if they played for Kansas.

RE: Wins like these win championships
@Hawk8086 I don’t know how many times over the many years things are looking bleak towards the end. Up 1, down 3, tied. Can we do it? And at the end KU somehow pulls it out and I slump back in my chair. It’s always darkest before the dawn.

RE: Crystal Ball Observations....
@Kcmatt7 Stats for 40 minutes for Udoka are meaningless. He couldn’t stay on the floor for 20 minutes both because of his shape and his penchant for fouling. Comparing him to Meeks at UNC at this stage of his career also proves nothing. Meeks was also a big man who came in huge and out of shape. It has taken him 3 years to get into the shape needed to play big minutes in Roy’s offense.
Doke is a freshman with little high school experience. He could block shots and make dunks and that was about it. The think we miss most about him right now is 5 additional fouls to give and some dunks that get the crowd excited. You have to remember, however, that the 5 fouls are nice but they also come at the price of the other team getting free throws and a large part of those would cost 2 shots.
You might also remember that Doke played in the early part of the schedule. Coaches weren’t scheming against him then as they would be in the conference if he were to perform as you think. This is almost a repeat of two years ago when Cliff was going to be the savior even when he was wandering about trying to figure out where he should be.
Doke will probably be very good in another year. The biggest loss is the experience that he is not getting even in a limited role.

RE: E X H A L E !
@drgnslayr I was watching Josh a lot in the second half. He simply does not move his feet. He reaches way too much. He allowed his man to get around him multiple times. When that happens he either lets them go when he is in foul trouble or the reach gets him a foul.
He does well jumping passing lanes for steals but not so much when he has to go one on one. His 3pt shooting was great. I’m obviously hoping that continues but the 12 points he made on offensive with the threes were given back with interest on the other end.
-
RE: Thoughts from the Game
@wissox One of the reasons that we got more calls in the second half than in the first was that we went to the basket much more in the second half. It is hard to be fouls called on the other team when we spent a lot of time passing around the outside and running the weave. I have nothing against passing and the weave but it does not foul up the other team.
-
RE: I Can't Help It.... Morgantown!
@drgnslayr Frank doesn’t go all the way to the basket as much this year as he has in the past. He has spent a lot of time working on his floater and has become quite good at it. Playing him for the charge opens up the spacing that he gets for the floater.

RE: New writer in town
@RockChalkinTexas Sounds like you have an athletic family. About the Orange Bowl. I went to the 1963 game they played at Lincoln against OU for the Big Eight title. They won 29 to 20. That was supposedly their first Big Eight championship in a number of years. The field was covered with oranges at the end and unfortunately sometimes during the game. That was the day after Kennedy was shot.
Our high school coach played for NU and had gotten the team tickets to the Iowa State game earlier in the season. That was when one end of the stadium was not closed. It had wooden bleachers and high school and younger students could get cheap tickets to the “knothole” section. The whole stadium only held about 38,000 at the time. A friend and I drove down and got the same type of tickets for the OU game.

RE: New writer in town
@RockChalkinTexas Born in SD and lived in Minnesota. That is as good as it gets. I of course am prejudiced since I have a similar pedigree. The Vikings were good back in the day because they played outdoors. When you have to wear snowmobile clothing to a game you are in some real weather. Where abouts in SD are you from? Unless it was Sioux Falls or Rapid City we may be the only people who have heard of it.

Merry Christmas to everyone on the board. Especially those with whom I disagreed this past year.

RE: With Doke out for the year, what changes now?
@HawkChamp The Golden State Warriors are leading the NBA in a number of defensive categories. There was much moaning and groaning about the loss of rim protectors with Bogut and Ezeli gone. The players contend in interviews that their style of defense has changed and that they are playing much better man to man because they know that there is no one there if they make a mistake.

RE: Thoughts on todays game
@justanotherfan Players have to have fun at every level. During their beat down of the Pacers last night Curry was going in for a layup. He passed the ball backward over his head to Durant who then stuffed it. The place went wild. It is still a game.
-
RE: Some team stats through 8 games
@drgnslayr Self addressed the minutes factor during a presser this week. He would like to play Frank 30-32 minutes but if he has to go with 4 guards for long periods there is no way. If played the whole game, there are 160 minutes to divide between 5 players which is 32 minutes per.
One thing he talked at length about is holding down minutes of activity outside of the games. They currently do not go through scouting reports on the court. That is done with everyone sitting. He also mentioned cutting down on some reps in practice. His point was that the number of minutes played in a game is not the only factor determining if players get run down.
-
RE: This Is It!
@justanotherfan If you want to talk about deadly mid-range shooters try Anthony Davis. He is lethal within 20 feet but almost never takes a 3.
-
RE: Udunka Very Mucho
@Jayrawks1 Probably the main thing in Self’s mind in Udoka’s favor is that except for some dumb freshman moves, he has not wandered about on the floor like someone who didn’t quite know where they were. Unfortunately Chieck and Cliff both fell into the wandering category.
Another key to his playing early is that he is not a tweener, a term that will never be applied to Udoka. An experienced big can sometimes get the best of him because of the experience but he will still have to contend with a very big person who seems to pick things up relatively quickly.
