    • RE: Some team stats through 8 games

@drgnslayr Self addressed the minutes factor during a presser this week. He would like to play Frank 30-32 minutes but if he has to go with 4 guards for long periods there is no way. If played the whole game, there are 160 minutes to divide between 5 players which is 32 minutes per.

One thing he talked at length about is holding down minutes of activity outside of the games. They currently do not go through scouting reports on the court. That is done with everyone sitting. He also mentioned cutting down on some reps in practice. His point was that the number of minutes played in a game is not the only factor determining if players get run down.

There are almost no NBA analysts who think that Kevin Love is going to play for any team other than the Cavs next year. Opting out is a charade. It is strictly for business. Those who can opt out including LeBron simply want to sign 2 year deals and probably with the same teams. The big money is going to come in the 2017 season when a new TV contract will kick in. At that point a max deal now will seem like chump change.

The CBA also expires in 2017 and the players want to get more than the 51% that they get now. No one is going to sign big free agency contracts now. Any agent who would recommend signing big now should be shot.

    • The Mayor Was Out Coached

I was sure I would see something along these lines before but nothing.

It appears that the Mayor was handed his a$$ last night by Scott Drew of all people and at home no less. The point was made endlessly by the color man that using all of his timeouts to stop ISU runs won the game. Along with Kenny Chery. Also note that this was done with Rico Gathers sitting on the bench. We should put a lot or credence in what the color man said since we believe them whenever they opine that KU should launch 3s.

Drew went with a smaller lineup of 3 pt shooters since Gathers wasn’t doing much under the boards. He took probably the only player that has a sniff at the league out of the game.

The Mayor on the other hand kept having his players chuck up 3 pointer after 3 pointer with little or no success. Niang couldn’t hit the proverbial KSU bull in the butt with a scoop shovel. What was working for them was Niang going inside, drawing defenders and passing to McKay for dunks. But no that wasn’t good enough since ISU is known as a 3 point shooting team. He also couldn’t prevent his players from making turnover after turnover at the end. What was he thinking?

Everybody here seems to love the Mayor for adjusting to his players strengths and not running a system. Did we see that last night. No we did not.

Maybe things really are as simple as the fact that it is very hard to win in the Big XII either at home or away. Maybe every coach doesn’t go from a genius when they win to a dolt when they lose. Who knows?

@Crimsonorblue22 A win may be a win for UK, UNC, or Dook. It is not that simple at KU. At KU a lot of people consider it a win only if it is by 30 points playing the people who I know should play and running the scheme that I know should be run. Actually it is rather more complicated than that. Scoring fewer points than the opponent is also a win if it is achieved by playing my players and my scheme.

    • RE: The Phog is a special place

@wrwlumpy I also became a KU fan in 1966. I had transferred from St. John’s University in Collegeville Mn. Besides having the best coach in NAIA football it had a fantastic church and the world’s largest Benedictine monastery. When I attended my first game at the phog it was like going to church with the ritual of the Alma Mater and the Jayhawk chant. With the lights down and a spotlight on the flag it was awesome. The lights were one of the reasons I have never liked day games. I was reminded of this during the AFH celebration when someone referred to it as a cathedral for college basketball.

As my job for the school, I was lucky to be a manager for the track team. As Ted Owens pointed out at the 60th celebration, the track team practiced in AFH during the winter. Since the games during the week were after practice I was always there before any of the fans. I would stake out seats for myself, my girlfriend and some friends. With the raised floor the seats were about at the height that the cheerleaders kicked. When they would arrive I would take their coats to the track locker room. For games on Saturday I could do the same thing since I was on the list of people who could simply sign in.

Watching JoJo White and the rest of the team was fantastic. JoJo was about the most mature student that I have ever seen. Watching the 1968 NCAA regional with KU with JoJo, Louisville with Wes Unseld, and Houston with Elvin Hayes from about 5 rows behind the basket was more than exciting. Vernon Vanoy more that held his own against Unseld and Hayes even though he was only about 6’ 8". We were supposed to play Louisville for the finals but lost to Houston.

      What memories in that building!.

    • RE: 3 small steps forward, one gigantic step backwards...

For those who want to forget the UK defeat this gives us a lot to think about since this was much worse. Who gives the east end of a rat heading west about OAD/TAD. There wasn’t one on the floor for Temple and they made us look like a junior high team. From what I could see the only people who look like they could play beyond a CYO league were Mason and Oubre.

So much for the clamor of Cliff starting. WOW!! That was impressive. A great example was with about 3 min left Cliff had inside position on a not very impressive Owl but didn’t get a body on him (I guess OADs don’t need to do that) and the rebound was taken away.

Brannen was another example of what went wrong. He hits a 3 in the first half and on the next play on the other end of the court he wanders away from his man who then puts in a 3. What the hell difference does it make if someone makes a boat load of 3s and then watches the game on the other end.

I have been a big Selden fan but the next time I see him shoot a finger roll layout I am going to puke. He and Svi seem to think that if you can roll the ball to hit the front of the rim that you get something.

Boy Perry was really good tonight. Other than shooting a face up jumper he does not appear to be able to shoot without spinning. That becomes really hard to to defend. When he is going left simply wait for the spin to the right and stuff it. He also needs to take the ball to the basket with some authority. In the first half there was a play where he gets a rebound and Temple is not really in position to do much. Unfortunately there was a player who was about his height within 3 feet so the ball gets pitched back outside. For crying out loud, it isn’t possible to get the ball closer to the basket for a supposed PF.

Inside out, outside in doesn’t really make much difference when you play like we did tonight. The only thing that approximated KU basketball was Frank going to the basket and Kelly and his ability to follow a miss and get up quick.

Shane is one of my all time favorites. Alan Ladd and Jack Palance shooting it out. What could be better. The final scene is a real tear jerker. Actually one of the latest Geico ads is a takeoff of it. The one with the “words can hurt” and the guy hits his head on the “The End”.

Maybe KU could do something like what was done with Alan Ladd. He was a real heart throb but only about 5’4" or so. They would dig ditches so that the ladies could stand in them and be shorter. If we could only do something similar with Cliff and make him appear to be a footer.

    • RE: Unexpected KU Precedents Continue Against Kent State

It appears that KU and most of the other elite BB programs have a big problem based upon the last couple of posts. I don’t disagree that screwing students in terms of the # of seats or location is bad. The problem is that all of the major programs have become very expensive and with the exception of big 10 teams BB also carries those programs. UNC, Duke, Kansas and UK are pretty much in the same football pickle. A good team every now and then but nothing to hang your hat on over the long run. Where does the money come from. Well in Kansas it does not come from the state. Here and in most places it comes from Williams fund members and their counterparts at other schools.

Not only does the big money come from athletic team supporters but from a small percentage of them who can afford to drop a mil or so here and there. I find it hard to believe that many of those people are “with it” or “cool”.

It has not escaped my attention that most of the posters here (including myself) do not like the ugly uniforms dumped on us by Addidas. I’m sure that our tastes in unis are not that far from that of the big donors. Although the recruits may like dayglo colors I don’t think that the people who build new dorms, new practice facilities and pay a pretty penny for coaches do.

Now we could do away with the expensive things but then the kids wouldn’t like that either. I do not think that things are as bad as many here seem to think. Supposedly we need to do a bunch of things including installing a new offensive package to recruit 5-8 OADs. In reality there are not nearly enough kids with the needed skills to stock more than 3 to 4 schools at the max.

Chicken little was NOT right. The sky is not falling. Part of the problem is that as a group we are too close to the situation. We know almost too much about the weaknesses of this SF or that PF or PG. I feel extremely confident that the real board rats at other schools think that their guy sucks at this or that and how can we possibly beat KU. Imagine how the fans of Baylor, Mizery, or KSU must feel. They generally do not beat us and we do beat them.

    • RE: The Big Red Dog needs more minutes!

I think we are over analyzing this a bit. Self has things that he asks (demands) that players do given their abilities and the need to win games. I don’t think that he is trying to “toughen” people or that they are in his dog house. When players don’t perform according to his metrics they sit. He does this with all players. Kelly played a few minutes and was unable to deliver. This may have been because he was sick or for some other reason. I don’t have a clue nor do others, but nonetheless he sat.

The point is that the everyone must perform to whatever level they are asked. Also let us not forget that he is coaching a team. I a reasonably sure that most of the people on the team know what is expected of them and equally important what is expected of their teammates. If you were a member of the team and know what is expected of each other and for whatever reason others do not perform but still play what would you think? I also do not think that a competitive player as hopefully all of the team are would want to be coddled.

How many times have we heard people say after they are done playing that their coach was hard on them and challenged them but that in the end it made them better players and better people.

@Kip_McSmithers The problem people perceive with the post in question is not that he/she called out Self for this game or for the KY game or for that matter any game this year. It is that the poster has called out Self about 95% of the time he/she posts both here and at kusports.com for years. Not withstanding an occasional disclaimer he /she doesn’t think that Self can coach worth a shizz.

Perhaps the poster is correct. KU should win at least 98% of its games and most by at least 20 to 30 points. Good coaches do that. Don’t they?

@ajvan When are we going to stop with ridiculous shizz about how KU would win if only we shot more threes or schemed for them. Who the hell would shoot them? I’m sorry bad question. Who the hell would shoot them and make them?

Greene’s carriage unfortunately returned to its pumpkin state about 6-8 games ago. I don’t usually sit around moaning and groaning about Self’s substitutions except today. Why in god’s green earth was BG in the game today? He did nothing good and plenty bad except for the meaningless 3 at the end.

Kelly has hit a few as has Frank but not much. Wayne finally hit one but he would be way better off taking 13-18 ft jumpers as would Graham. I know statistically that is a bad shot but a lot better than clanging yet another 3 so that the other team can get a long rebound and a layup.

Maybe we should pray for everyone getting hot as they were in January. Unfortunately Jaybate was correct back in about October when he pointed out that we didn’t have many good 3 shooters.

    • RE: Self Fullfilling Prophecy

@HighEliteMajor With respect to Brannen Greene being psyched out. What a crock! You must think that BG is the dumbest player on the face of the earth. Unless he is the dumbest player he knows that he is on the floor for one reason only and that is to shoot threes. He sees the film and must know that his defense needs a lot of work. He cannot dribble the ball more than 5 times with a defender within 5 feet without coughing it up. His passing leaves as much to be desired as that of anyone else on the team. Let’s give him a little credit for improving the rebounding.

And yet after all of this he was on the floor yesterday during the most critical part of the game. Why was he there? Obviously to shoot threes and he did. Making one that counted for something. Who put him on the floor? Since neither you nor KUinLA are the coaches I guess it was probably Bill Self. Obviously he must have felt terrible, being as stupid as you assume that he is, thinking that the coach has no confidence in his abilities.

Self could have had KO or Svi shooting to try and come back but he did not. As offensively challenged as a bag a hammers he played someone that he had no confidence in and who he had insulted and damaged his confidence with his “fools gold” comment. Leave the dime store psychology to Dr. Phil.

@HighEliteMajor You are correct that Svi is better at most things other than 3s. Removing Svi from the equation, that was exactly my point in a previous response to you. BG is out there to shoot 3s. When Self plays him at critical times such as the second half on Saturday, it is only because he has confidence that BG is the best 3 pt option. I am assuming that BG is not stupid and knows that he is not out there for his stellar defense. Therefore the infamous “fools gold” comments should not have a deleterious affect on his confidence as you have previously claimed.

@DoubleDD Oh but you do. Good defense leads to turnovers and turnovers lead to either fast breaks and layups or at least to another possession to run whatever offense you have.

This in fact is one of the problems with the teams of the past 2 years. This year the defense did better at preventing the other team from scoring. However, it was not good enough to create turnovers and it is turnovers that have been the mainstay of the famous KU runs. We didn’t have many runs this year.

@HighEliteMajor I’d say that the team was probably better with Cliff in the game rather than Jamari for 10 to 15 minutes over the course of the season. I think the problem was that you extrapolated the few minutes that Cliff looked good over what would be the season. Unfortunately for the team and Cliff those were rather spotty minutes.

If Cliff would have done this and if Cliff would have done that he would have been better. But he didn’t do those things. Self knew what he could get from Jamari. • RE: IS THE NEW 30 SECOND CLOCK THE TIPPING POINT FOR RADICAL TREY BALL?

@drgnslayr GS score a lot of points shooting 3s. They win by playing defense. The Warriors have always been able to score however they didn’t use the 3 as much. The difference between the days before Jackson and Kerr became the coaches and today is that they now play defense. Cleveland got a lot out of James and Irving on offense but they got nada from they rest of the team. They also have a much better bench than they or others have had in the past. A lot of what happened in overtime Thursday was due to the number of people that they threw against the Cavs best players throughout the game. James and Irving both played ridiculous minutes. Both Curry and Thompson were able to spend a lot more time on the bench.

As for Bogut, a lot of their offense goes through him when he is on the floor. He doesn’t score a lot but he is one of the best passing big man in the league. He is also the rim protector. If you watch a lot of Warriors games, when he is on the floor the other team tries to take it to the basket less than when he is on the bench. He is much better than Ezeli at doing that. If you want someone with absolutely no offensive skills other than dunking try Andre Jordan. If he isn’t close enough to touch the basket, he can’t do a thing.

The Warriors obviously shoot a lot more 3s than does KU; however, the key thing stressed by both Kerr and Self is the necessity that the ball doesn’t stick. When they are playing well, which wasn’t the case in the first quarter Thursday, they shoot, drive, or pass very quickly after getting the ball. Just to make HEM mad you will even see them running an outside weave a couple of times each game. The horror!!

@drgnslayr It’s hard to know what a foul is. One minute they call a picky touch foul 25 ft from the basket, and the next someone is hammered big time under the basket and nothing.

My favorite play is the push off by the ball handler followed immediately by a foul called on the defender for being the the same zip code. Nic and Frank seemed to get called for that a lot.

One thing I have noticed is that if there is any chance that the other team will get an advantage in the open court someone will intentionally foul. You know it is intentional since they immediately raise their hand and no one complains about the call. This has happened numerous times in all of the games we have played.

Sometimes a player is better off of the bench or the coach wants to bring in an energy guy or a great shooter to take advantage of the normal substitution pattern or he wants someone to steady the less talented bench. This is usually limited to one player. The starters with some exceptions finish the game when it is close.

In these games Few starts the college kids and but it is the pros with sometimes one college kid who finish and who play the most important minutes. What is he trying to accomplish with this rotation?

Prior to the second TTU game Frank made 68 attempts at a 3 point shot (follow this closely) in 24 games for an average of 2.833 attempts per game. After that game he shot 30 3 pointers in 11 games for an average of 2.72 attempts per game. If frank had shot at the same rate after TTU as he did before he would have taken 2.833 times 11 shots for a whopping total of 31.16 3 pointers attempted. That is slightly more than 1 shot over 11 games. Do you think that the number makes your case stronger? Really?

As I pointed out Wayne made 1.8 of the teams fewer attempts per game. Your reason for his doing that is no more plausible than is mine. Bill Self may indeed have mandated fewer 3 pointers per game. We will never know unless someone writes a book or does an interview about the subject. His mandating, however, has never been your chief concern. You have based most, if not all, of your points on the subject of the “fools gold” remark at the press conference. This supposedly demeaned the team’s accomplishments thus far in the season and lowered their morale to the point where it affected their shooting. Why the sudden change of tactics? Is the job of arm chair psychologist becoming too difficult.

As for my being a jackass, I humbly apologize. I truly did not understand your drive to maintain exclusivity here for that label. What is very easy to follow is that you believe that no one (and this includes Bill Self) knows as much about basketball as do you.

@drgnslayr A pull-up jump shot generally results in a shot of about 15 to 18 feet. I thought that there was general agreement among the cognoscenti here that this is the worst shot imaginable. All we should be shooting are threes or layups. It is absolutely amazing that what is popular here one day is shizz the next and vice-versa.

@REHawk Until Svi starts hitting in games 2 names will come to my mind when he misses a three. Luke Axtell and Jeremy Case were two people who could supposedly drill 3 after 3 in practice and nada in games. Hopefully he can do things in games to back up the praise being heaped on him both here and by HCBS.

@HighEliteMajor So Ronnie defeated the Soviet Union. According to most economists the Soviet Union would be defeated by capitalism and had been on its last legs for decades. Yeah the old boy almost spent this country in the ground and he is a hero. What do you think of book by Bill O’Rielly , a hero to faux news fans, who has claimed that Ronnie was not able to function on many occasions after the attempt to shoot him? Is Billo a liberal?

What is pathetic and sad is your lack of any knowledge of what went on during his term. By the way, his policies and approach would remove him from a sniff of the current Republican nomination. He raised taxes a half a dozen times, signed a bill giving amnesty of illegal immigrants, and had little or nothing to say about abortion and gay rights. Let’s not go back to his term as governor of California where he performed similar actions.

You might not like the cut of my cloth (whatever that is supposed to mean) but at least I learned something during my time at KU. Sorry that you cannot say the same.

@JayHawkFanToo Is that all? How about Iran/Contra. That was a pretty sight. Selling munitions to the same people who were calling us the “great Satan” was a master stroke. It seems that breaking the law by sending the proceeds of those sales to the Contras was just dandy. It was during his term that the middle class started its’ slide into its’ current economic state. I could go on and on but to no affect on someone living in a state where the Laffer curve is thought to be the cat’s pajamas by the current governor.

And not to be too picky but you might want to spell your hero’s name correctly.

    • RE: Brandon Rush gets to play for injured H.Barnes

No only did Brandon play very well is the last game but everyone associated with the Warriors really like him. The fans appreciate his play and remember how well he played before he blew out his knee. The team really likes him and the Warrior announcers really pull for the guy. What was really great to see was how he was smiling when the fans gave him a big hand after he was substituted for following his 3 point shots in the third quarter. He normally looks rather dour but he lit up like a Christmas tree.

He started in place of the injured Harrison Barnes who may be out 1-2 weeks with a bad ankle sprain. He fills in well for Barnes since both are very good with corner threes. His biggest issue is getting his confidence back and that appears to have now happened.

    • RE: Overcoming 7'6"

What I was wondering about during the first half last night was whether they were performing funerals during the timeouts. My memory is slipping but I can’t recall another game at AFH in which the crowd was so dead. There were a couple of shots of one side of the seats and everyone was sitting there like they were in church.

The students are on break but that was ridiculous,

@drgnslayr The call against Frank for stripping the ball was horrendous. It could have been made by one of the other officials on the floor and it would be just a blown call. To make the call when you can’t even see the play is what frosted me. There is no excuse for the call.

    • RE: 12 blocks vs C5's 5

@RockkChalkk How is it that KU scored 109 points total and 77 points in regulation with this big, lumbering boat anchor at center for much of the second half? This was done against a team that ranks in the top 20 in virtually every defensive team statistic. Why were the announcers (who have seen more than a few games between them) praising LL’s rebounding and getting up and down the court?

@truehawk93 Have you watched Hield play at all this year? He hasn’t put up 46 on anyone else but he was averaging 24 coming into the game. He was the conference player of the year last year.

    • RE: Ok. That was fun. But is KU really #1?

@drgnslayr Given that OU and ISU for that matter play 7 or 8 people who pushes the first team in practice? Having watched both teams in pre-conference games it doesn’t appear that they play the small number because of shortening their rotations. They play a short bench because that is all that they have for good players. Vick hasn’t played much so far, but he surely puts more pressure on Frank or Devonte in practice than those on the other benches. The same goes for Svi, Carlton, Cheick, Jamari, etc.

This is where our depth will pay off during the course of the season. When teams get to the tournament the timeouts are longer, there are generally more stoppages to see who knocked the ball out of bounds and so on. There is no reason to play as many people and a long bench is not of as much value. However, that long bench can be invaluable in the months leading up to the tournament.

    • RE: Time For Self To Kill C5

@HighEliteMajor How much does Diallo play at the time? Something around 5-8 minutes. No problem with extrapolating that. What is the minimum number of minutes that Diallo has to play to make your conclustion meaningful. How about 1, if not that 2. Admit it, you have no data to give any approximation of what he would do with 25 minutes. Not to be too picky but what does “despite all of the rancor for Traylor or Lucas” mean? You do know what rancor means? Obviously not.

    • RE: C5 at 9/16 was not the problem

I’m confused. Many people on this site thought that this was going to be a very tough game and that KU could lose. Some people stated that they had penciled this in as a loss before the season started. We then proceeded to play a bad game and got beat. How does anyone here think that you get beat? THE OTHER TEAM PLAYS BETTER for whatever reason. Teams that are beaten usually get out hustled, out rebounded, and out played.

Except for a couple of people who all of a sudden think that the winner of the league will have 1 or at most 2 losses, the general consensus has been that the winner will probably lose 3 to 4 games and most of these will be on the road. Well guess what, we lost a game on the road. Who in the hell thought that that would never happen this year.

This is what I love about this site. People go on and on about how only tournament losses count, who cares about winning the Big XII, yada, yada, yada. The sky is falling. Bill Self is washed up. The season has now taken a different direction. We will never win again except against KSU (no one here ever thinks it is possible to lose to KSU). Now if we lose to TCU on Saturday and OSU next week I will become nervous about this team. Until then I will be disappointed that we didn’t win in Morgantown and will be waiting to see what comes next.

      Chill!!
