Hot Rumor

Chris Mullin is stepping down at St. John’s, and they are targeting Bobby Hurley.
-
Rick barnes is staying at Tennessee
-
@JAYHAWKFAN214 Barnes grew up just a couple hours over the mountains from Knoxville. I’d think he’d want to ride out his career somewhere around there. Not LA.

That’s why he turned down the offer from UCLA to stay at Tennessee
-
Barnes and UCLA was never going to be a good fit. Barnes has zero west coast ties so that was going to be a struggle for him.
Dixon made a lot more sense because Dixon is from LA and grew up in the shadow of UCLA.
I think this also shows that UCLA really isn’t a top tier job that many think it is based on the people turning the job down.

Recent developments at St. John’s and UCLA don’t hurt us with Precious and Stanley

Agree big time there. I dont think Achiuwa was staying home to play at his brothers school anyway but the move makes it a certainty.

UCLA has finally found its coach. Mick Cronin from Cincinnati.
-
@Woodrow All of this for Mick. Seems like they really, really didn’t want Mick…
Seriously, this should be a wake up call to all. KU used to double salaries and it was a no brainer to come here. But now even second tier schools update their facilities, pay coaches competitive salaries, and structure contracts that are much harder to get out of. UCLA is one of the best jobs in the country and they got what looks like their 8th or 9th choice. Don’t take any of our past success for granted.
-
@Kcmatt7 I don’t even think he is a good fit their at all. He is a blue collar guy from Cincy and just doesn’t seem to fit in LA. I guess we will see.
I am not sure UCLA is that good of a job anymore or I think you would have seen bigger name coaches reach out and try to go there. Nobody wanted the job. I think that says a lot about where UCLA is.
-
@Woodrow He’s clearly not a great fit. But if he can surround himself with a good staff that recruits well, that can change. It also helps that they’re the UA darlings and UA has really stepped up their game. I’m sure he ends up being gifted some recruits.
As far as their search, I don’t think it helps that the Pac 12 is in complete disarray right now. The only coach worth poaching from inside their own conference is Altman and he’s 60 and not going anywhere. You might be right that the job has lost some of it’s luster. But it is still a very, very good job. I just, personally, think they went after some strange coaching choices and might have been a few years too late. They are basically in a year that there is no up-and-comer looking to score the biggest job they can get. No Archie Miller. No Holtman. No Mack. No Dan Hurley.
The biggest shocker to me was that Musselman wasn’t their even close to one of their top choices. But, they clearly wanted a guy with a record of sustained success. So I think they limited their own coaching selection a bit more than they should have.

@Woodrow - I’m certain Cronin will face sticker shock when he gets here. $1,000,000 homes in nice areas, heavy traffic, long commutes, $4.50+ gasoline, pressure from alums, competition from all NCAA and pro sports franchises. It ain’t Cincinnati!
Should be really interesting…

Agree. I live about 45 minutes north of Cincinnati and the cost of living is so good that many pro athletes never leave or come back after they end up at other franchises.

… and taxes. Imagine that.

But, of course, there is a wonderful climate and the ocean. That’s the balance.
-
I would never want to live in California.
-
I definitely don’t get the draw of Cali. The ocean is cold. The Beaches are crowded. The Traffic blows. The public transportation sucks. The houses are expensive. The taxes are high. The gas prices are astronomical. The food costs more.
If you want warm weather all of the time, Texas or Florida definitely seem like the better options.
-
@Kcmatt7 Depends on what part of Texas. We lived in Houston for almost nine years - traffic is the worst pretty much anywhere. Dallas is pretty high up on the traffic suck list as well. Might as well add Austin to the list - it’s despicable too.
Florida - one big ol sinkhole waiting to happen. But it’s purdy.

Self says he’s not going anywhere again.

Strangely silent? The athletics director.
If Self’s possible departure has been used against him, why wouldn’t the AD make some public statement related to a united front with Self?
One possibility — they ain’t. There is more chatter about this. They could quell it quite easily.
That extension would be one solid way to take care of it.

What?
-
@BShark Very nice. Consider it quelled! They were discussing it on 610. Maybe a well timed reaction?
-
Ultimately it doesn’t really mean anything but it is nice to see. Long and Self came out swinging on this subject tonight and I would bet a large part of it is to quell the rumors and calm the some of the donors. Hopefully the ball gets rolling on some player additions for next year’s team.
-
@BShark maybe you will be released
