New 2019 Recruiting
-
It is a little strange not to have a jayhawk in the game, but I think KU is on the radar for a couple guys in it. Recruiting doesn’t look so hot right now for us, 2 guys signed and the highest rated is at 95th in the country. Robinson-Earl, I think will be a big loss if Dedric leaves. We do have some good young guys in Dotson, Grimes, David and Ochai that are probably big factors for at least next years team. But with the chance of losing both Doke and Dedric fairly high IMO, I’d like to see us sign a big guy or 2. I think the FBI probe is hurting us in that regard, recruits maybe waiting to see if we get a post season ban. Which is highly unlikely looking at how Hernandez didn’t cause Miami any ban or to vacate wins tho he more than likely got paid to play last year. Arizona doesn’t seem to be slowing down after the supposed tape of Miller talking about giving 100k to Ayton. Maybe the tape doesn’t exist but it still baffles me than no Nike team is being looked at tho several including Ok State, Arizona and Duke were in reports.
-
I do think Dedric comes back. People here want to talk how he has nothing to gain by returning, but I don’t think much to lose either and probably actually could boost his stock into a late 2nd round pick if he gets his 3 point shot to around 35%.
Right now, I don’t see him as anything other than a Summer League invite before headed overseas. If he stays, and improves his outside shot, he could be a late 2nd rounder.
The 2 bigs I don’t see playing in a KU uniform next year are Doke and Silvio. Doke has injury issues and needs to leave while he can salvage a pro career. I also just don’t think Silvio ever gets cleared. That $60,000 payment should be what keeps him from playing. KU shouldn’t receive any punishment from that because it didn’t involve KU. The NCAA is not a court of law and doesn’t need the same level of evidence to rule someone ineligible. Gassnola’s testimony is enough for the NCAA.
I would love Silvio to play this year, I just don’t see it happening.
-
Dedric is leaving, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see KJ leave too as a grad transfer. Dedric isn’t going to improve his draft position much. Even if he gets significantly better next season, the 2020 draft is MUCH stronger than the 2019 draft, which is about as good as the year Anthony Bennett went #1. I don’t really think Dedric is a NBA level player but he is the kind of guy that can make millions overseas. Silvio will be back if he’s cleared this year. The $60k payment was never made and the NCAA and KU have agreed that it’s not relevant to his case.
Doke is the hardest one to read. He was great when healthy, but hasn’t stayed as such. His injuries have been kind of flukey and he’s really young (doesn’t turn 20 until September). As of today I think he leaves but if KU doesn’t land anyone significant in the spring I can see Doke and the staff making arrangements for him to come back for another season.
-
A couple mocks below. In one, Dedric late 2nd. In the other, Dedric nowhere to be found.
The guy is averaging a double-double yet is an after-thought. The obvious reasons.
The key with many folks seems to be whether there is a reasonable chance to improve one’s draft stock by coming back. If not, then get out an make money. Barring other things that might influence.
That might favor SDS playing next season if the penalty doesn’t eat into next season.
-
@HighEliteMajor For me, it is that Dedric can only marginally improve his draft stock next season. Apparently, anything less than a 30 and 20 average isn’t going to bump him into the draft. This is his 4th year in college, so likely he will be graduating in the Spring. So even coming back to get his degree isn’t much of an argument at this point.
It’s time for him to go make money. And I’d bet he still sneaks into the 2nd round. He’s shooting the ball better here in the 2nd half.
-
@Kcmatt7 I would tend to agree. The things holding him back are largely things he can’t control or improve. Of course, if he does come out and show a significant expansion in his range and %, as mentioned above, that is a different thing. He had a sweet fall away last game, too. He needs to mimic Dirk Nowitzki. Maybe a poor man’s Dirk. This is a close call. But can he work on those issues making money? In a pro setting? That’s why I think it favors him leaving.

Thank you for the info. Good stuff.

If Silvio or doke were playing he could show more of his range, sucks for all of us!

So Mathew Hurt is visiting this weekend. This might be one of the most important visits Self has had in a long time. Withe the way things are going on the recruiting front he is about as big of a must get as it gets for Self and KU.
I anticipate the crowd being pretty good as they know how desperate this team is for a win. Hope we knock it out of the park with him.
-
Not that KU was ever in it, but the Edwards visit isn’t even happening now.
-
I wonder what changed his mind? I haven’t really read anything where the staff was out watching him since it is pretty much known he is going to FSU…

Best case scenario is the staff knows Stanley is picking KU but that would fly in the face of everything regarding KU hoops right now.
-
@BShark It sure does seem like this hinges on another players decision. Seems weird to make a change like this so close to a visit…
-
Swoooooooosh
-
You’re telling me the NCAA rule changes aren’t preventing Nike from still buying players?
Color me shocked.
Arizona with the #1 class, Louisville 3 and USC 4 ironically.
I don’t know if it was just always going to be a down recruiting year with so much roster uncertainty or if the FBI investigation legitimately scared players away. Or if Adidas is on the DL right now. Or Bill isn’t working with them anymore and being a straight shooter to close out his career here.

I sure hope not.

Well I read where we picked up another CB for Hurt yesterday putting us at 79% - -the rest at 7% - but ever since the Ayton debacle I’m always skeptical - -tell they actually commit.
If there could be some way we could manage to get Hurt and be able to lure Stanley - -then maybe be able to salvage this recruiting year. - -Just so much up in the air with who might/will return from the current roster.
Will Doke come back ? - - Grimes come Back ? - – KJ ? - - - Dedric is GONE I just don’t see any way he returns - - lots of unanswered questions at this point = =HUGE weekend = =hope the phog is rockin for Hurt - -hope we play solid in front of Hurt man
-
@jayballer73 If the belief is that neither Doke nor Dedric are coming back…that would seem to work in our favor for getting Hurt…he slides right in there next to Big Dave.

the thing is now – this ruling on Silvio couldn’t of come at a worse time for us. - -With us not knowing now whether we will be facing more penalties - post ban this next year or what ever might be the straw to push Hurt in another direction - -with us not knowing if we will be put on probation or not - -terrible timing with him coming in this weekend and hearing this news. - -and you can bet these other schools that in the recruiting with him a his finalists - -will be playing this to the hilt against us - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 You are right…other programs will be playing that up big time. This sucks.
-
I have no idea what the NCAA will do to KU but I wouldn’t b surprised at all if we see a downtick in recruiting which will lead to obviously less success on the floor. Ultimately this bull shi*t might be enough to push Self out the door.
Not sure why any coach would want to put up,with this non sense when he doesn’t have too. Hell he could retire if he wanted .
Also , I understand a lot of this was brought on by himself, but still it might be running him ragged and I wouldn’t blame him for leaving it all behind.
-
But then again he’s sticking up for his kids. Hurt is seeing all kinds of things

There were whisperings about something more sinister in regards to why JRE didn’t pick KU. If anyone would know about something coming, it would be JRE’s mom.
I hope everything just blows over. I think next year’s team could be really good.
If KU lands Hurt and/or Precious, that’s a sign Self is sticking around imo.
-
Hurts getting his free visit in. He owes self for all the time he has recruited him. So for that it’s nice to see him following through. I have no doubts this is just a courtesy respect visit. Some may disagree but no elite kid is sniffing us with all this

All 3 of the Rivals guys said Kansas leads and predicted they’ll get him.

I hope it happens and like I said I think it would be a very good sign for the future of the program.
-
@FarmerJayhawk I know that is a good sign…but are those guys usually accurate?

Bossi and Corey Evans over there are really, really good

@FarmerJayhawk Good to hear!

New target. HS teammate of Precious. https://247sports.com/Player/Harlond-Beverly-46040841/

Been wondering if we would offer, kid has had a big senior yr. Fits what we need
-
Well have been reading from people posting. - Hurt enjoyed his visit , BUT has some concern , about Doke & Lawson possibly returning making a crowded interior -rumors are starting that he is becoming a Duke lean - - Sounds about right for the way things have gone this season -would be about right. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Stealing recruits from MSU is always a plus.
Even if Dotson and Grimes stay it would be nice to add another guard.

Hell I don’t know – they got a lot coming back --if he is worried about being crowded that is not the place to go - -some mentioned like thye have 3 coming back around his position - -makes no sense

a positive trade for Chucky. Even my grandma would be an upgrade at this point
-
Looks like Edwards is going to end up at UGA and not Florida St.
-
The next KU basketball class is ridiculous. KU’s only top 100 guy left and Self hasn’t signed one since. Is everyone in the top 100 drinking the Kool-Aid? My take on this is that they are all on the take or someone would have committed already. I get it no one wants to come to KU and get the De Sousa treatment from the NCAA! Adidas, and its affiliates have ruined KU’s next class and possibly our streak of conference titles!
-
Woodrow said:

Crazy up$set there. I think the biggest two recruits left in this class are Hurt (duh) and Doke. Maybe Grimes, though I haven’t heard much about his intentions.
-
One to keep an eye on. https://247sports.com/Player/Zeke-Nnaji-46041762/

@FarmerJayhawk I am assuming you are talking about IF Miller gets canned?
Or is he possibly going to open his recruitment back up regardless?
-
WOW at the Edwards news.
I won’t be shocked if Miller goes down.
-
On Miller, I’ve heard it’s a matter of when. Powers that be in the state are extremely angry that he’s had 3 assistants fired for NCAA rulebreaking and criminal behavior.
-
@FarmerJayhawk It probably doesn’t help Miller that UA is sitting in the 9th spot in the Pac-12 with a 5 - 5 conference record and currently have a 4-game losing streak going.
-
Has Doke played too much for this season to be considered a redshirt?
-
wissox said:

Nope. He appeared in 9 games out of 31 scheduled which is under the 30% threshold at 29%.
That said, I don’t think this will happen.
-
wissox said:

It would be a huge win to get Doke for next year. 20-21 is fantasy. He’ll graduate sometime next year so at that point he’ll be wanting money, not a masters.

Right. He does have an incredible class coming in, but at some point you can’t outrun the law, whether that be the kangaroo court of the NCAA or the SDNY.

Still can’t believe Edwards to Georgia was real. Still can’t believe anyone would want to play for Tom Crean.
