2019 Recruiting
-
Well just read the article , was talking about how now the KU staff and well all others now turning their full attention to the 2019 recruiting.
Talked about being in the Dallas Ft Worth area this weekend as this is the 1st live evaluation period of 2019 recruits, this is a weekend with the EBYL where Adidas - -Under Armour - -& Nike was having events.
Some names I really hadn’t seen - and then some have seen - -these aren’t all off the article BUT: here are a few that is connected with KU or they recruiting. Adidas: - -1st for sure is Markese - we know all about him - -the one I hadn’t heard anything on is Onyeka Okongwu a 5* ranked # 18 a 6’8 - -215 lb - say has serious room to grow as of Jan his top 5 were - -Arizona St , UCLA , Washington, USC , & KU. - - sounds good but does anyone else see the trend here?
Off Nike : - - never have heard nothing on this kid yet either: - - Jalen Lecque 5 * # 8 - -6’2 out of Arden NC - -Norm Roberts is the lead recruiter for him - - - -Isaiah Stewart- -now have heard some on him 5* # 10- -6"8— -230 - - & - -Kofi Cockburn - -# 31 - -6’10 - 300 lbs
Under Armour : Christian Brown a 5 * # 27 - – 6’6 200— - – -& a 5 * Josh Green who’s most interest they say is from the West Coast
These are some of the names of interest for 2019 - plus they listed - -JRE - - & Chandler Lawson so here we go - -off and running. - -ROCK CHAL ALL DAY LONG BABY

Okongwu is almost certainly staying in California. His guy at UCLA just took another job at Cal, so they may get him. Not sure KU is that interested anyway. Lecque is an absolute stud. Love his game. He was originally a 2018 kid but went to 2019 about a year ago. He may come back to 2018, but probably not until late summer. I don’t expect KU to really be involved either way. I think they should go after him if we miss on Romeo. Grimes is big enough to play the 3, and Jalen can play the 2. I think Tait is wrong on how big Jalen is too. He’s nearly 6’4 now I believe. Isaiah is probably going to Duke. I like Kofi, but he’s not really a need. Brown is a small ball 4 man at this stage, probably staying in the South. Hurt is the target there. Josh Green is legit, and KU has a good shot. Was pretty good at the Hoop Summit on the international team (he’s Australian).

Yeah, not the best researched article. Didn’t even mention Duke in the bit about Cole Anthony and he will probably end up there.
I would be stunned if Okongwu ends up anywhere besides UCLA.

I think he ends up at Cal now that Grace is there.

Almost a must get at this point.

In other news, KU is out on Vernon Carey. Going to be Duke, MSU, UK, Miami, and UNC.

Unfortunate but not surprised at all.

@FarmerJayhawk staff prioritizing other bigs over Carey or more he’s not interested?

Some of both. Hurt and JRE have been top targets all along and never put in the work that the rest have.

Also Nike. That’s the main reason I never figured he’d end up at KU.

Not mad. Glad we got cut now instead of chasing a unicorn.

Agree. Fortunately it seems like KU didn’t waste a lot of time here.
-
@BShark I do think Carey will take a team to a FF much like Okafor did. Just not a lot of guys who will be able to stop him at the college level.
-
@Kcmatt7 Agree. Unfortunate that KU was never really a player for him but like you said it’s best to be out now. Looks like KU has been prioritizing other recruits anyway.
-
I don’t see much difference in Carey then what Duke just had in Bagley/Carter or Zona with Ayton. OAD bigs very rarely transform teams into title contenders. Okafor and Davis seem to be the exception so far.
-
We will see. Watching him destroy Big Dave for an entire game really opened my eyes. None of those guys ever did that to another McDs AA the way Carey just absolutely punked Dave.

Definitely, Carey is very good and well deserved of his reputation and ranking. If KU had any chance with this guy I would be all aboard trying to get him here. We may still have one last shot if Self gets to coach him this summer.
Big Dave likely wouldn’t have been a MCD’s AA in other classes according to many scouts and recruiting services. Credit to Dave for improving as much as he has to get the honor. My expectations for him are tempered until he gets coached up.
I do find it a good thing that Carey isn’t stringing along KU interest which allows the staff to focus their attention on others they likely have a better chance in landing.

According to Slater KU has not offered Kofi Cockburn a 6’11" big man.

Yes Kansas has
-
Yeah @BeddieKU23 you nailed it. I like Dave long term but he is not a typical mcdaa. Hope people aren’t expecting too much.
Cockburn is a project but don’t mind that offer.

Now offered?

Yes he has a KU offer.

GOOD. Didn’t want to dick around and offer too late.
-
I would like to see Dickitch interview Cockburn…
-
Slater with a CB pick for Achiuwa to Florida St. Wondering what the connection is there… Probably selling the Bacon/Issac success

Interesting.

I won’t be surprised if Thompson pops early (for KU duh).

I certainly get that vibe as well.

@BeddieKU23 Yeah doesn’t take much digging tbh.

Bryce is very active on twitter and has put out the same kind of message about every offer but it does seem like this one is special for him.
It would be pretty damn cool for Self. This would have to be his first father/son combo coached.
-
His shooting ability this early is definitely a plus. Would like to see him continue to develop physically and seems how he’s young he’s got plenty of time for that. If Self is offering this early it must mean serious interest. Would be shocked if he ends up anywhere else
-
Only the 3rd OK prep player to be offered by KU since Xavier Henry played at KU. Other two being Trae Young and Nino Jackson. Thanks to Sam Duren via twitter for this nugget, I wouldn’t have thought about it. Ended up dm’ing with some old OK hoop heads about Nino. Man that kid could ball.
-
@BShark Didn’t Nino get into some trouble with the law? Ended up at a JC??
-
@Woodrow I thought it was academics but if you have an article about legal troubles I’d love to see it. Awhile back I was trying to dig into exactly what happened with him and didn’t find anything conclusive.
-
@BShark This article says “off court issues”
http://newsok.com/article/3802903

Looks like he had a kid and stopped going to school which led to grade problems…
I just remember Matt from the Shiver was raving about him and then he just disappeared.
-
@Woodrow Thanks. I knew about the academic issues but never why.
And yeah the kid could absolutely hoop. I think he would have been really good at KU under Self. Too bad it didn’t work out.

Well from what I read today - - looks like RJ Hampton and Robinson Earle - really stood out at the EBYL in Dallas this past weekend. - Article states that KU is for sure the team to beat for Earle but we knew that - we need to lock him up early. - Personally I think he is pretty well locked up already but could be wrong.
I’ve heard rumors just not for sure how legit they are, talk about RJ reclassifying . - Is this people just blowing smoke OR is there a legit chance he reclassifies to 2019? - - -what ya think? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 99% chance RJ reclassifies to 2019. It’s all but done.
-
@BShark So what’s your feel with him? - - -we have a legit shot?. - - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

KU vs Duke. KU very strongly positioned but Duke is making a HARD push which makes sense because he’s a top tier talent.
-
Kansas is another school that has long been linked with Hurt, and the Jayhawks also made a good impression during their visit.
“My family and I have a good relationship with them,” said Hurt of Kansas. “The assistants are really good guys who talk about life with me. It isn’t all about basketball with them. We talk about life as well, so we have a strong relationship.”
-
At this point, I’d say it’s more likely than not Hurt and Hampton are part of KU’s 2019 class assuming Grimes goes pro. I can’t see Jacobs going anywhere else unless KU cuts him loose. He wasn’t going to play a ton anyway as a freshman, but can be a good player down the line.
-
Hampton just got offered by Duke

With the expectation he’ll reclassify, which could happen as soon as this summer.

Norm is going to watch Precious this weekend. He likes KU quite a bit. UConn and FSU are teams to watch.

Not sure KU can land Hurt and Achiuwa but the odds of landing one seem pretty good. Either one puts KU in a good spot.

I’d definitely take a Dotson Hampton Achiuwa Hurt Dante lineup.

Have consistently heard he likes KU- especially Norm. This isn’t the type of player we let go to a Uconn or FSU… This is a top 5 player in his class I think when its all said and done

Norm’s stomping grounds. If anyone can close him…
Great to hear that he likes KU, kind of unusual for someone from NY. Going to be a battle.

For sure. Norm is the man up there. It’s early but I like our chances.
