2019 Recruiting
-
To Mitch’s credit he was serviceable on the court this year. FR year was um…we just won’t talk about his FR advanced offensive stats since he only played 100 minutes.
-
guys I realize it’s more likely then not - -and by a large amount probably - probably just a lot of unfounded BS BUT I’m seeing more and more from different places that Romeo might quite possibly pull a Harrison Barnes - - skpe his school.
My main question is -where and how do these kind of things get started? - -I mean I see it once and just laugh - - see it different place and blow it off with a little less conviction - -but I’m seeing it multiple - - multiple times. - How would anyone ever know that? - where they getting this from? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
You mean do his announcement on skype? I say let the kids have fun.
-
@BShark I think he means where are people finding that info out?
-
Hurt is better than Mitch Lightfoot, yes. But let’s pump the brakes for a second. Mitch was a darn good player coming out of HS, and has been a solid option at KU. Hurt has more upside than Mitch because he’s more skilled, but he also has a lower floor because Mitch is probably the better athlete of the two, although I am basing that purely off highlights, not any measurables.
Hurt’s upside (All-Conference, Second or Third Team All American) is much higher because I could see him coming in and being an inside out scoring option capable of averaging 15+ points on a good team, along with 6 or 7 rebounds and 3 or 4 assists. I don’t know how good he would be defensively, but I can see the makings of a very good collegiate player on the offensive end with the BBIQ to be a passable defender once he understands the system and responsibilities.
Hurt’s floor (bench shooter substitution in specific lineups) is lower than Mitch’s because Hurt may not be as good a defender as Mitch has become. If Hurt can’t defend, I could see a scenario where he just can’t stay on the floor and he never gets more than sporadic minutes. He may still have the occasional game where he goes for 16 or 20 because of his shooting ability, but he might not develop that way.
The thing is, I can’t even tell you which of those scenarios is more likely. Maybe he arrives on campus, gets stronger and is All Conference as a sophomore. Maybe he never adds the weight, struggles with his shot and his confidence, and ends up transferring after a season. Perhaps he lands somewhere in between.
I will be watching his summer very closely to see how he handles his AAU action, and how he does up against some of the springier athletes in the class. If he holds his own defensively against them, that will change his upside. If he starts getting blown away, that will be a big red flag.
-
FWIW… I do not think Langford is announcing via Skype. I think that rumor started from someone on another board making a joke, and people thought he was serious.
Also I am brand new to this board. It looks like there is a lot of information and conversation. I hope to add to that!
-
@Woodrow Welcome!
I hope he does though. I actually think that’s pretty sweet.

Ya him skyping his announcement to the Coach. - Like Harrison Barnes did in Ames - all those Iowa State people at his high school and then he skpes out his announcement to Coach Williams
-
@Kcmatt7 well he is right about him skyping his announcement to the Coach - BUT your right too. - Wonder where these people are getting this stuff at saying that’s what they are hearing - I’m seeing more and more saying they are hearing he is going to skpe

@justanotherfan Mitch’s floor is probably not playing at all. Which we might see next year depending on how the roster shakes out.
We will see on Hurt. It’s still early. At this time I believe Silvio was top 5 in his class as well.
Everyone is on Hurt and he looks to me like KU’s top target. KU has a lot of good options at the 4 in 19 but I like Hurt’s skill level a lot.
In terms of athleticism and potential defense, Achiuwa would be the best bet.
I like JRE and Malik Hall long term but I don’t think either is high impact year one.
-
@BShark JRE = Perry 2.0 basically right?

Taller, better rebounder, a bit less skilled.

He’ll be quite the luxury as a bench guy. I don’t think he’ll be any better than our 4th big, assuming Silvio and Dave are still at KU.
-
I’m ok with that. I just want him to be able to stretch the floor.

He’ll get there. It’s not really his game yet but has the tools. He is a pretty good driver like Perry. Underrated handle.

I’ve written Silvio off at this point. If he plays I take it as a bonus.
Still Dave as a SO, Mitch in his 4th year and likely KJ in his 5th year removed from HS will all be guys JRE would have to try to supplant.
-
Wouldn’t it be something to see KJ come out and be a freak this year? I feel like living in your brother’s shadow would be motivation enough to bust his ass.
Side note: I just saw that Dedric had like 12% body fat at the combine. I can only imagine how much more explosive he will be after a year with Hudy. I kind of expect the same bump from KJ though. I doubt they were getting the best of the best at Memphis.
-
@Kcmatt7 Dedric looked like an old butter ball that knows how to hoop that you see at the rec when he was at Memphis. Gotta think Hudy was a factor to picking KU.
-
@BShark I sure hope so. I just didn’t realize it. Gosh dang he is going to be fun to watch.
-
For reference
-
Certainly don’t look like gladiators
-
@BShark Ya personally just me - -I too think more likely then not when it is all said and done - - Silvio has played his last minutes for us and that’s a shame - Could be wrong - -have been wrong before - but just think he is finished. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@Kcmatt7 Wished all I had was 12% body fat lmao - -reverse that and you might be close 21 % - -na I’m just messin with ya lol. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 Lol don’t we all…

-
@BShark On video??

I’m totally fine with Self going and meeting with him and doing due diligence. If they find sufficient red flags we won’t keep recruiting him. They must think he’s good to go if we’re recruiting him now.
-
@BShark the cartwheel & backflips.
-
-
@BShark Was it Raef or Collison that did a cartwheel dunk at the McD contest?
-
-
Sign him up!
-
Another aspect of this move I like is it unclutters 2020 a bit. Hampton is for sure OAD and KU has a lot of strong connections to guards in the 20 class.
-
Can’t complain if he moves to 19.

I think it’s hugely in KU’s favor. It’s basically Duke vs KU and Duke has kids slated for 19 already. Plus younger Jones should still be there.
-
Ryan seems to think if RJ joins 19 and picks KU Markese would open it back up. Not an earth shattering statement to make given RJ is a Top 10 player in whatever class he decides on but one of the more vocal KU supporters in recent memory simply might be over-recruited…
-
@BeddieKU23 If he thought he was going to come here and start year 1, or even get a ton of PT, it might be best he goes somewhere else anyways.
If he thinks he can come in here and be an impact player for the last 3 of his 4 years, than I think KU is the place for him.

Yeah I hope we keep Markese. Take him and RJ, have Markese develop for a year before really playing. Provided KU has the room.
-
Self watched JRE, Harvey, Jalen Suggs and Chandler Lawson today.
-
The staff not watching Carey. Methinks it’s because we have other bigs in mind for 19. One rhymes with Lassie and the other with dirt.
Also add Wiseman to the list, since he’s a teammate of Lawson. Not that we have a chance.
-
UK in on Josh Green. I want him bad if we can’t get Achiwua. Was really impressed with Green at Hoop Summit.
-
Yeah zero chance at Wiseman, but like you said free to watch.
Agree on Green he is very good. Shame UK is getting involved but I’m not surprised.
-
KU watching Cole Anthony. Kid is a stud. He’s about as explicit as it gets in not talking recruiting so nobody knows what he’s thinking. KU probably not going to be a serious player.
RJ Hampton did work last night. 28 points (11-22 2-3 FT 4-8 3 PT) 9 assist 6 TO 8 boards 3 steals

Well just read the article , was talking about how now the KU staff and well all others now turning their full attention to the 2019 recruiting.
Talked about being in the Dallas Ft Worth area this weekend as this is the 1st live evaluation period of 2019 recruits, this is a weekend with the EBYL where Adidas - -Under Armour - -& Nike was having events.
Some names I really hadn’t seen - and then some have seen - -these aren’t all off the article BUT: here are a few that is connected with KU or they recruiting. Adidas: - -1st for sure is Markese - we know all about him - -the one I hadn’t heard anything on is Onyeka Okongwu a 5* ranked # 18 a 6’8 - -215 lb - say has serious room to grow as of Jan his top 5 were - -Arizona St , UCLA , Washington, USC , & KU. - - sounds good but does anyone else see the trend here?
Off Nike : - - never have heard nothing on this kid yet either: - - Jalen Lecque 5 * # 8 - -6’2 out of Arden NC - -Norm Roberts is the lead recruiter for him - - - -Isaiah Stewart- -now have heard some on him 5* # 10- -6"8— -230 - - & - -Kofi Cockburn - -# 31 - -6’10 - 300 lbs
Under Armour : Christian Brown a 5 * # 27 - – 6’6 200— - – -& a 5 * Josh Green who’s most interest they say is from the West Coast
These are some of the names of interest for 2019 - plus they listed - -JRE - - & Chandler Lawson so here we go - -off and running. - -ROCK CHAL ALL DAY LONG BABY

Okongwu is almost certainly staying in California. His guy at UCLA just took another job at Cal, so they may get him. Not sure KU is that interested anyway. Lecque is an absolute stud. Love his game. He was originally a 2018 kid but went to 2019 about a year ago. He may come back to 2018, but probably not until late summer. I don’t expect KU to really be involved either way. I think they should go after him if we miss on Romeo. Grimes is big enough to play the 3, and Jalen can play the 2. I think Tait is wrong on how big Jalen is too. He’s nearly 6’4 now I believe. Isaiah is probably going to Duke. I like Kofi, but he’s not really a need. Brown is a small ball 4 man at this stage, probably staying in the South. Hurt is the target there. Josh Green is legit, and KU has a good shot. Was pretty good at the Hoop Summit on the international team (he’s Australian).

Yeah, not the best researched article. Didn’t even mention Duke in the bit about Cole Anthony and he will probably end up there.
I would be stunned if Okongwu ends up anywhere besides UCLA.

I think he ends up at Cal now that Grace is there.
