2019 Recruiting
-
Is it supposed to be a ranked player, say top 30-50 or just a program player with potential? Isn’t talking to a committed player frowned upon? I remember Calipari getting a lot of flack for having Terrence Jones decommit fro Washington and sign with UK immediately. I believe he also got Enes Kanter who had also committed to Washington the same year.
-
Did Kevin Porter sign an LOI with USC?
-
@BeddieKU23 Yes, in November.
-
Boy Matt is really making us think with this one.
I can’t figure this one out. Almost think its someone who signed in Nov
-
@BeddieKU23 Yeah I agree. Assuming they aren’t signed could be incorrect. Schools will pretty much let kids out of their NLI.
@JayHawkFanToo I’ll wait to pass any judgment on it until we see who it is if it happens.
-
I will guess it is a player that has not signed a LOI only a financial aid package since coaches cannot recruit players with signed LOIs.
-
Memphis and Louisville getting involved with Hurt. That recruitment is going to be a dog fight to the end. I sure hope he takes visits and commits early.

UCLA just visited him a couple days ago as well.
Consensus top 5 player, great fit for the modern game, seriously considering staying more than a year. Def going to be a knock down drag out.
-
For clarification, Memphis worries me because of Mike Miller’s relationship with the Hurts.
-
I can’t help but think this FBI cloud will really hurt us until it is over or it completely blows up and everyone else gets pulled in.
-
@Kcmatt7 nothing will happen major long as ku it’s not directly implicated Sean Miller still has a job in Arizona and they have him actually on tape doing a lot of legal stuff
-
-
Sean Miller is taking scraps right now because his entire recruiting class fell apart after the FBI probe.
-
I’ll believe the tape when the DOJ actually uses it as evidence. There is no proof of that tape existing at the moment. Well, other than Miller not filing a lawsuit against ESPN for defamation.

He are the players ranked 25 - 65 that have not signed LOIs
(30) Shareef O’Neal - PF, UCLA, (31) Jordan Brown - C, unsigned, (35) Elijah Weaver - PG, USC, (37) Brandon Williams - PG, unsigned, (40) Khavon Moore - SF, Texas Tech, (41) Taeshon Cherry - PF, Arizona State, (55) Jairus Hamilton - SF, Boston College, (56) Courtney Ramey - PG, unsigned
That’s eight guys. I’m going to discount O’Neal and Brown right off the bat. O’Neal has already switched commitments once. Brown hasn’t seriously considered any non-Pac 12 schools. Taeshon Cherry considered Texas A&M, but other than that, he’s a California kid that considered west coast schools.
That leaves five guys - Weaver, Williams, Moore, Hamilton and Ramey.
Weaver is a big PG (6-5). He’s from Florida and considered schools from all over the country (UConn, UVA, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, NC State, Mizzou, etc.). He’s currently committed to USC. He would be an interesting replacement for Langford. He’s a lefty that is more of a pass first PG.
Williams is a 6-1 PG. Williams is more of a score first PG. He would be a bit of a duplicate of Charlie Moore on this roster. He’s a good player, but I don’t know that he makes sense on this roster with Moore and Dotson already in the fold.
Moore is a 6-8 SF that can do a bit of everything. He’s not super athletic like some guys, but he’s a very solid player in every aspect. However, he’s committed to Texas Tech, and it is generally considered poor form to poach a committed recruit from a league rival. He’s a nice player. I would guess with Smith leaving, Tech will be locking this signing down.
Hamilton is interesting. KU was pursuing him early, but backed off and went after other targets. He’s a really good player. A bigger version of Agbaji in some ways (6-8, 220). Duke, UNC, Florida, Arizona and others were interested, but he ultimately picked Boston College. He’s the type of player that might be interested in switching his offer, and missing on Langford would give KU an opening on the wing. He’s at least a three year player. Probably a four year guy.
And finally Ramey. He’s a 6-3 PG, but he could be considered a combo guard. He was linked to Mizzou, but hasn’t signed. Louisville has started pursuing him again. He was HS teammates with Carte’Are Gordon (SLU commit). KU has never been connected to him, but he has been connected to both Texas and Oklahoma State. He’s unsigned, so he could be in play.
If I had to guess, I would say Hamilton is the mystery man, although I have no insider information on that.
-
@Kcmatt7 right and like i said as of right now ku is in good shape unless more damming evidence come to light. I wouldnt worry about it remeber 50 schools were implicated
-
Maybe im alone in this but im not sold on matthew hurts game. I mean he shoots it well but hes not very explosive
-
Some good research FYI.
I think of the players you listed Ramey, Weaver and Cherry are the only three that KU hasn’t had contact with.
Brandon Williams is announcing soon after his visit to Gonzaga, this is a Oregon/Zona battle. All the recent buzz is Oregon won him on his visit.
Hamilton’s brother transferred into BC as well. I can’t see him leaving that situation with family.
Ramey seems like the most open of all especially since he’s not signed anywhere but it looks like Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma St & Louisville have the most attention from him. I don’t think Ramey fits the need KU is looking for.
This makes me think this is a kid signed (LOI) with another program who doesn’t want to risk his current position unless Langford goes to Indiana.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was another big with the unknown situations surrounding Doke coming back and De Sousa being possibly ruled ineligible.
I would also assume it’s someone the staff would view as an impact player in some way to compensate for what Langford would bring to the table. With our roster there really isn’t a need for development type players. It’s got to be someone that would have a chance to start.
Name I’ll throw out- Jaylen Hoard, signed with Wake Forest early but I hear more and more grumblings. We recruited players in his HS area (Aaron Wiggins, Dotson, Ian Steere) among others.
-
Your right he’s not a quick fast twitch athlete. I wasn’t as high on him last summer. His Jr film looks much improved though. Such a skilled player inside/out. His shooting numbers this year were rare for a player his size.
-
Well if you believe what has been said so far, it’s a player that is committed so that automatically writes off Williams and Ramey.
-
@BeddieKU23 I’ll do a cartwheel somehow if it’s Hoard.
-
@BeddieKU23 tru and im not sure if hes a good ball handler, but he is a good player im just not sure hes the 5th best player in the country.
-
Hurt might not be able to win you a game by himself, but he would make everyone else on the floor better the entire time he is on the court. He should stretch the floor, pass well and rebound effectively. He is the type of player that has the quietest 12 ppg, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 7 rebounds you’ve ever seen. But then he also leads the team in +/-
-
Hurt is my top want among players I think KU has a real shot at.
-
Matthew Hurt is a really skilled guy, but as @ReggieKansas and @BeddieKU23 say, he’s not a great athlete. I wish he were a bit bigger. He’s basically a slightly taller Mitch Lightfoot with ball handling ability. I’d even say Mitch is probably the better athlete of the two. He’s not a statue, but he isn’t a mobile guy. He can’t punish you with his strength.
All of his plays are skill plays, so it’s hard to guess how that translates as the athleticism increases. He’s a really good shooter and a skilled passer. He could be an incredible four year player. He could also be a complete bust. I wish I could say for sure whether his high skill and BBall IQ would translate.
My estimation is his ceiling is Perry Ellis - starts slow his first year, but turns into a really, really good four year player. His floor is that he doesn’t get strong enough to handle the interior and becomes a 6-9 offense only wing off the bench. You don’t not recruit that guy. You just have to recruit around him.

I’ll do backflips somehow as well.
-
I think #5 is probably correct for him. He’s got such a high skill level. From what I’ve seen he looks like a capable ball handler especially for his size. As @BShark mentioned this could be a player that plays multiple years in College which is the real benefit of possibly getting him. He’ll be good as a freshman but could be a Big-12 POY/All American type as a Soph. Lofty praise I know but guys his size with that shooting/skill level don’t come around every class
I expect he’ll have a big AAU year and keep reinforcing his lofty ranking
-
@justanotherfan my big question is can he get 2 the rim off the bounce against better athletes
-
@Kcmatt7 i wanna see him play againdt the rest of the top talent next year to get a real gage of what he can do
-
@justanotherfan i like the lightfoot comparison
-
He is worlds better than Lightfoot.

Old guys doing backflips and cartwheels, gonna be difficult.
-
@BShark in terms of comparable size and athleticism it’s pretty close obviously Matthew is a better all-around player
-
I’d be interested in seeing them side by side. I’m not convinced Mitch is the 6’8’’ he is listed at.
I would say there is a chance Mitch is more athletic but his offensive game is terrible so it doesn’t really matter. You can easily get away with playing Hurt at C to mask his possible defensive issues.
-
Worth an injury or two, its for a good cause
-
@ReggieKansas He is not even close to Mitch a lot more talented, like Bshark said light years difference - come on Reggie you just focus on having my steak ready let us focus on the recruiting lmao. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
To Mitch’s credit he was serviceable on the court this year. FR year was um…we just won’t talk about his FR advanced offensive stats since he only played 100 minutes.
-
guys I realize it’s more likely then not - -and by a large amount probably - probably just a lot of unfounded BS BUT I’m seeing more and more from different places that Romeo might quite possibly pull a Harrison Barnes - - skpe his school.
My main question is -where and how do these kind of things get started? - -I mean I see it once and just laugh - - see it different place and blow it off with a little less conviction - -but I’m seeing it multiple - - multiple times. - How would anyone ever know that? - where they getting this from? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
You mean do his announcement on skype? I say let the kids have fun.
-
@BShark I think he means where are people finding that info out?
-
Hurt is better than Mitch Lightfoot, yes. But let’s pump the brakes for a second. Mitch was a darn good player coming out of HS, and has been a solid option at KU. Hurt has more upside than Mitch because he’s more skilled, but he also has a lower floor because Mitch is probably the better athlete of the two, although I am basing that purely off highlights, not any measurables.
Hurt’s upside (All-Conference, Second or Third Team All American) is much higher because I could see him coming in and being an inside out scoring option capable of averaging 15+ points on a good team, along with 6 or 7 rebounds and 3 or 4 assists. I don’t know how good he would be defensively, but I can see the makings of a very good collegiate player on the offensive end with the BBIQ to be a passable defender once he understands the system and responsibilities.
Hurt’s floor (bench shooter substitution in specific lineups) is lower than Mitch’s because Hurt may not be as good a defender as Mitch has become. If Hurt can’t defend, I could see a scenario where he just can’t stay on the floor and he never gets more than sporadic minutes. He may still have the occasional game where he goes for 16 or 20 because of his shooting ability, but he might not develop that way.
The thing is, I can’t even tell you which of those scenarios is more likely. Maybe he arrives on campus, gets stronger and is All Conference as a sophomore. Maybe he never adds the weight, struggles with his shot and his confidence, and ends up transferring after a season. Perhaps he lands somewhere in between.
I will be watching his summer very closely to see how he handles his AAU action, and how he does up against some of the springier athletes in the class. If he holds his own defensively against them, that will change his upside. If he starts getting blown away, that will be a big red flag.
-
FWIW… I do not think Langford is announcing via Skype. I think that rumor started from someone on another board making a joke, and people thought he was serious.
Also I am brand new to this board. It looks like there is a lot of information and conversation. I hope to add to that!
-
@Woodrow Welcome!
I hope he does though. I actually think that’s pretty sweet.

Ya him skyping his announcement to the Coach. - Like Harrison Barnes did in Ames - all those Iowa State people at his high school and then he skpes out his announcement to Coach Williams
-
@Kcmatt7 well he is right about him skyping his announcement to the Coach - BUT your right too. - Wonder where these people are getting this stuff at saying that’s what they are hearing - I’m seeing more and more saying they are hearing he is going to skpe

Welcome aboard - -always good to get new blood - -new thought - -theories - always good to hear others 2 cents worth here/ - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@justanotherfan Mitch’s floor is probably not playing at all. Which we might see next year depending on how the roster shakes out.
We will see on Hurt. It’s still early. At this time I believe Silvio was top 5 in his class as well.
Everyone is on Hurt and he looks to me like KU’s top target. KU has a lot of good options at the 4 in 19 but I like Hurt’s skill level a lot.
In terms of athleticism and potential defense, Achiuwa would be the best bet.
I like JRE and Malik Hall long term but I don’t think either is high impact year one.
-
@BShark JRE = Perry 2.0 basically right?
-

Taller, better rebounder, a bit less skilled.
-

He’ll be quite the luxury as a bench guy. I don’t think he’ll be any better than our 4th big, assuming Silvio and Dave are still at KU.
-
I’m ok with that. I just want him to be able to stretch the floor.
-

He’ll get there. It’s not really his game yet but has the tools. He is a pretty good driver like Perry. Underrated handle.
