Omaha Mavericks - Monday - 6pm - ESPN 2
-
It’ll be my boy’s first Allen Fieldhouse experience today. I fully expect a 20 pt. blowout and a lot of fun to be had by the ‘Hawks.
-
@dylans Enjoy!!!
-
@dylans Even if it should finish in a squeaker I hope our bench earns lots of minutes today. Rest Newman.
-
@REHawk I hope Newman gets that much needed rest. But if KU plays the 4-1 exclusively there isn’t enough guards to rest anyone much. It’s a major dilemma.
-
Great pix as always.
I’ve got plenty of Omaha memories. Used to go up to Ak-Sar-Ben racetrack every now and then. Just after graduation my KU girlfriend and I hit the daily double there. We drove back to Lawrence through the worst thunderstorm I can remember…had to pull off the highway a few times before the skies cleared to give us a glorious red sunset. After we got back to town we toasted our good fortune with Chivas at the Sanctuary club, upstairs from the Stables.
And as a high schooler I got to shake hands with Bobby Kennedy when he was speaking at the auditorium there, just a month before he died in LA.
-
I realize we have been struggling but -how do we drop another notch from 13 to 14th when we win? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONGBABY
-
@nwhawkfan some fun memories!
-
-
Then they became just the Kansas City Kings, went to the Western Division Finals and then Cleveland money took our best players and of course the roof caved in.
-
@wrwlumpy …Another Omaha-related memory, sort of…
Before I transferred to KU I went to Rockhurst College (now Rockhurst U), where the KC-Omaha Kings had their practices. I had a student job in the athletic department and used to watch Archibald, Lacey and the others go through their paces. (My favorite player was a tall bald guy named Toby Kimball.) They always seemed to come up short in the playoffs, then when they got good, the owners hauled them off to Sacramento.
-
I have one Omaha memory, and it ain’t good … circa 2015.
-
@BeddieKU23 Omaha is quite possibly the worst team on KU’s schedule this year, no reason this shouldn’t be a 30+ point win tonight.
-
Wow, the Sanctuary…it was my home away from home when I lived in Lawrence late '70s to late '80s. Tuesday dime draw and Thursday quarter pitcher nights were the best; they also had great specials on burgers and steaks. I knew the owner, Ace, and his wife and all the bartenders and often we would stay after hours to party and shoot pool for decent money. Best looking waitresses to boot.
-
This is a get-right game. A chance for guys to find their mojo again. I’m hoping for strong performances from Newman and Cunliffe.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Yeah, I mostly hung out downstairs at The Stables. As I recall, it was the first tavern in Lawrence to have an Atari Pong machine.
-
By the early 80s I believe it was called just the Sanctuary, The deck upstairs was great in the Summer. I used to see KU basketball players, including Manning, there all the time.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Don’t know when they tore it down, but I think there’s an apartment complex where it used to stand.
-
I am not liking this one announcer tonight. Talking about how much more the refs get paid at AFH. Not appropriate!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh well…at least we have the best-smelling arena.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Jay Bilas, Dicky V, Doug Shortsonbackwards, Bill Raferty - NONE OF THEM HOLD A CANDLE TO THIS A-HOLE. I shut the sound off at the ten minute mark - there is a 14 second delay on the radio to the TV and that is so much better than listening to that weiner.
-
The Mavericks look tired on defense this half. I think they will finish the game just shooting 3s.
-
Kansas seems to play better defense when the 3’s are going down.
I’ve disliked Dan Dakich for a while now because he’s a Big10 homer. He’s right about schools like Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Carolina getting more calls against No-Name U, but he certainly seems to be fixating on that point tonight. Especially when I’ve only seen 2 or 3 missed calls the entire game. The foul call on Lightfoot’s block was the worst call that’s been made tonight.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich vick didn’t foul, that guy that fell down. I went back and looked. That was the no call that started his mouth. Have we had him before?
-
Maybe. He doesn’t usually do Kansas games; I think usually more Big10 stuff. But I will watch whatever college basketball game is on so sometimes I listen to him.
I still think Walton is the worst.
-
Dan Dakich is a horrible announcer. He pissed off Tom Izzo awhile back.
These mean tweets he’s reading exemplifies why he’s a horrible announcer.
-
99-54 the roof is about to come off!
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I blame it all on Dick Vitale. Ever since he started doing color commentary every has-been coach thinks he can copy his act.
I really liked Al McGuire back in the day, but nowadays every retread coach wants to believe he can do a stand-up act at Mr. Yuk-Yuk’s Comedy Cellar.
-
There isn’t one fan in the B10 that doesn’t hate Dickitch’s guts. He’s a punk.
-
Dakich is horrible. Good grief.
-
It makes you wonder how some of these people keep their job.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 We live in an era where public figures gleefully celebrate their ineptitude and the public’s hatred for them, knowing full well that they won’t feel any repercussions as long as they dance the dance their bosses tell them to and they don’t get caught harassing women.

I Agree with you 100000000 % - -this guy man, talking smack right off the bat about Ku. - then like about 1/2 way through the 2nd half what do we get - w e get a split screen and get to listen to this moron and this other guy talk about anything and everything other then the ball game - -I mean come on. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@HighEliteMajor I can understand how hard it can be for announcers to keep the audience from tuning out during a blowout game…it happens all the time in other sports, especially baseball.
Vin Scully was a master at this, and was understated to boot, which made it even better. But Dakich shows his lack of talent in that particular area.
What’s worse, he kept contradicting himself, first slamming KU’s defensive effort, then praising it, then slamming it again. Make up your damn mind !
-
@approxinfinity I don’t think he can say what he said about Self and the refs know they get paid more coming here. Do you?
-
Anyone else get a little ticked about the whole home losing streak thing? Nice to stomp someone after a close win but likely our last big win of the year (+25). Sam looks a little lost but will be handy in a few weeks.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I think he thinks he can. Do you think this is the last we’ll see of Dickish Dan?
-
@approxinfinity I’m sure that crap gets back to Self and KU. I’m guessing the big 12 won’t like it either.
-
Hard not to root for this kid
-
@approxinfinity This is the last time do a KU game this season since he’s a Big 10 guy.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 @Texas-Hawk-10 This does raise an interesting question: How much influence do coaches have in the announcers that cover their games? Do you think Coach K and Duke has had any influence on who covers them over the years?
-
I understand announcing teams are assigned to conferences by day of the week at the beginning of the season. This link has a list of the various teams and conferences and looks like we get “feeling groovy” Walton on Thursday.

I walked behind him at an LSU game once and came close to just ‘accidentally’ spilling my drink on his head. I wanted to stay and watch the game since it was Kentucky so I decided not to.
-
I’ll take Walton over Dakich any day. Dakich just comes across as a know-it-all prick.
Walton is far more positive in his commentary and he actually stops talking once in a while, probably to take a bong hit.
-
@nwhawkfan Toby Kimball “mount Baldy.”
-
Great posts again. One person you missed was Roger Sayers. He was Gale’s brother. I saw him at the 1963 NAIA track championship in Sioux Falls. He was extremely fast.
