@kjayhawks And if Svi departs this spring, we have two scholarships to offer. I hope and really think that Svi returns. He hasn’t yet fully endeared himself to our hearts.

It’s going to take a pretty stellar recruit to crack the starting lineup this coming year. Lawson’s are going to bail us out in 2018-2019, without them we’d have a lot less experience returning (especially if Malik leaves).

I believe KJ is a redshirt Fr. with up to 3 years of eligibility remaining if he were to petition the NCAA for a 6th year. I doubt it’s an issue, but who knows?

He wouldn’t get a 6th year. That’s for injuries and the like.

@BShark He was injured in 2015-16 with an Achilles injury, and only played 10 games. Received a medical redshirt, so he has 3 yrs left.

Still counts as the first redshirt. Would have to have something like that happen again to get another year.

@BShark I believe the transfer sit next year, after a medical redshirt previously, will not cost him a year of eligibility. It is commonly referred to as a redshirt, but it is not the same. So he doesn’t need to petition or get a waiver. 3 yrs left once they are eligible. Dedrick will have 2.
Edit: I’m not so sure anymore…sources differ!

Friggin NCAA is so confusing. Guess we will find out for sure when he pops up on the KU roster page officially for next season.

@BShark On the other hand, ESPN said he needs a waiver:
Dedric Lawson will have two years remaining after sitting out the 2016-17 season, while K.J. will have three if he can get an NCAA waiver for a sixth year of eligibility.
Maybe that is just a time period waiver based on the 4 years eligible in a 5 year period. Probably perfunctory for medical redshirts since the rule seems designed to avoid stacking in a program.
But, both sources cannot be right so more Googling on the way!

Dedric Lawson will have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the upcoming season and K.J. Lawson, if he applies for and is granted a sixth year of eligibility because of injury issues earlier in his career, would have three years of eligibility remaining.

@BShark Dedric is a Sophomore already and KJ is a redshirt freshman currently. I don’t know if they will be in Lawrence long enough to matter, but what @mayjay referenced in regards to eligibility is what I was talking about. Potientally 3 years for KJ if he were to be granted a 6th year of eligibility due to the two red shirts; one medical (Fr. year) and one from the transfer. And 2 years for Dedric since he’s used two years of eligibility at Memphis.

KJ could graduate by the end of his basketball “sophomore year”.
1st year- red-shirt
2nd year- played as a freshman
3rd year- sit out transfer year
4th year- play as a sophomore.
With Dedric likely a OAD at Kansas because of his skill we may have the brothers just one year. Most likely Dedric is the more ready prospect and KJ could come back another year to have a featured role (especially if Chandler & DJ sign on for 2019).
It does seem like KJ might have the higher ceiling because he can play the SF/ small ball 4 position where as Dedric is a 4 that needs to refine his athletic ability and quickness to translate to the next level. KJ might develop more in his year off at KU and have some momentum for that years draft. Just thinking out loud for these two. They are both really good players and they are an excellent core to build around for 2018

Interesting situation. Chandler is REALLY REALLY good, but so is JRE. Can KU take both? I hope so.

Should be able to, what bigs project to be on the team after 2018 season? Lightfoot is the only given.

I think it’s extremely likely that both end up here (especially if KJ sticks around and JRE is about as big of a KU lean as they come), but they are fairly similar players (though JRE is built a bit better at this point). Certainly neither would be turned down.
