Motley's Drue vs 7 and a half Eligible Scholarship Players Game Thread

@brooksmd Picked up a nice size flask of CB Honey today myself… Yeah !!
-
@RockChalkinTexas That baseline drive reminded me of another KU great. Paul Pierce almost lived off that type of drive at KU.
-
@DCHawker Ok

What are we looking at there? JJ take down at end?
I should have posted both images side by side. On the three that Wainright missed it was contested by Lucas who was on the floor about 5 seconds prior.
-
Think Bragg will play sat? I say yes
-
@brooksmd was fun! He was all over the place.
-
@Blown May have, but it’s about time we got the benefit. Maybe Drew doesn’t know how to work the refs like HCBS who usually lets the refs know how he feels when there’s a big disparity.
-
they all over AFH
-
I promise you Drew told his team to foul Mason. How did that work out? The cat can recruit, he just can’t x and O it. I posted this in another topic. Is there coach that has done less with the talent Drew has recruited? If I was him I would swallow my pride and attend a Coach Self camp. He could learn something, and make him millions.
-
DG and frank eating during interview
-
@brooksmd What Drew inexplicably had no clue about was how to get his guys to drive inside in the 2nd half to foul LL out. No passing to high post. Mottley can drive, why not feed him? Baylor fans must be frustrated. So must Mottley.
-
@DoubleDD they did at the end though. That was something to behold. 08 like
-
How about Mitch “good minutes” Lightfoot tonight?
-
@KUSTEVE Don’t know about tougher, but about 4 or 5 of those guys are tall enough to crap in the back of a pickup truck… Ya can’t teach height !!! Scott is glad of that cause he’dprob screw it up !!
-
I think chips, crunching
-
@globaljaybird Do you have a book that you pull this stuff out of?
-
@globaljaybird that’s some tall
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Don’t encourage him.
-
@BShark Yes he did. Maybe not enough. What 2 pts, 2 blocks a rebound and no TO’s.
-
@brooksmd wondering if he’s tall?
-
Self really only plays Lightfoot when he is mad at this point.
-
Poor coleby! Not blocking out on that throw was a killer

Not going to claim that he is a great or even very good Xs and Os coach, but what talent? Does he have anyone on this team that was a top 50 ranked player coming in? I’m asking as I don’t know, but my guess would be no. Regardless, much less talent than KU, AZ, UNC, Duke, UK and probably many other teams. He’s gotten pretty good results out of this bunch and they won 20 six years in a row and made an E8. So, IMO, he doesn’t deserve all the flack he gets…
-
Ll was not much help first half, hopefully him and Bragg will help us out down there!
-
The second half is the prime example of why Scott Drew is a turd. Motley was great in the first, drew LLs third foul early in the second only to touch the ball about 3 more times all night, while the rest of the bears jacked up 3s. Lol I could out coach Scott Drew.
-
Kinda wondering where the green guy went. Kinda scared me!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 i liked how the guys went to him and he delivered in the clutch. He can be our version of Ochefu - it’s all between his ears.
-
@HawkChamp free throws too
-
@brooksmd Why not-it’s good exercise for the brain to recall all this crap - even if it is a little salty or vile…just consider the source ! LOL
-
@Crimsonorblue22 true dat
-
Selfs talking about never having a team bank 3 3’s before.
-
Selfs happy w/d last 3 mins
-
Well, now we know Bill is going to use the zone more and more. It really took away Baylors inside game. That was Nova like.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 he definitely should be. Our guys know how to finish.
-
Either way you slice it, this ain’t your big brother’s Baylor Bears. These guys are tougher. They DID benefit from some horrible-looking bank threes, but we also benefited from some bad calls. Props to them tonight. It’s a two-horse race. If we can figure a way to beat them on the road, that should at least seal a share for us.
I noticed afterwards that Self was slightly more cordial to Drew afterwards. Playing Drew’s zone probably bridges the gap a bit between the two in Self’s mind.

Part of this was brilliance from Self changing defenses and point of emphasis.

Agree. I’m not a huge fan of Drew but the job he has done with this team is tremendous. As I mentioned earlier in the thread he has three players that would very likely be at KU if KU didn’t basically pass on them in Freeman, Wainright and McClure. Well, Freeman and McClure could have easily been Jayhawks, not sure KU ever showed much interest in Wainright.
So let’s look at what Drew has on this team. Lucas type of ranking PG in Lindsey, fringe top 75 kid McClure (fell off late after starting higher in rankings), fringe top 300 Maston, JUCO scrub Omat, JUCO , NR JUCO Acuil, Top 150 Motley, and top 75 guards Wainright and Freeman both of whom slumped in the rankings iirc. Drew had this team on the precipice of being the #1 team in the country and was #1 earlier. Hell of a job.
Edit I forgot Lecomte, TOP 300 GUARD coming out of hs.

Night all. See U Saturday for the clones. KSUcks lost tonight to TCU! UT barely beat Tech.
To all the other Big 12 teams - read it and
-
@HawkChamp He whoopped Jared Sullinger & Robbie Hummels butts both with a zone… 2012 that zone had us one victory from an NC. Self hasn’t gotten 600 wins with rocks in his head.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 lost my tunein feed for postgame

Drew can’t x and O it. Even the media types say Baylor is a good team but not the best.
-
@BShark he’s a solid coach but they made no attempt to get the ball to motley in second, we will always find a way to get JJ or Mason the ball.
-
And this is why you’re right about Drew. Hey the cat can recruit. He just can’t coach. Give Coach Self this Baylor team and they beat KU In the Field house. I hate to say it, but it is true.
-
@kjayhawks A bit easier to get a guard the ball in a zone defense versus a big. Still Drew should figure it out, but probably not a fair comparison.
-
@chriz agreed but Baylor played zone most the game and JJ got plenty of touches, he shot more than anyone else on the team. I’m a basketball coach myself. Idk what you could call that but poor coaching.
-
God I love being a KU fan. Here we are talking about how Drew an opposing coach should’ve done this to beat our beloved Jayhawks. Us Jayhawk fans are a special breed. We really are
-
Self read a statement about Vick. He can’t answer anything. Doesn’t know anything. You can tell he’s really pissed. A lot of people r pissed at KU writers from star!
-
What calls did we get? I saw a bunch of missed walks from Baylor. That guy flopped on the 3
-
@kjayhawks I hear ya. If I recall correctly, didn’t Motley get all his points posting up against our bigs? I know in the 2nd half he eventually did get touches but we doubled him. Then the one time we didn’t double him, he scored.
Josh isn’t a post-up big, he’s obviously more of a small 4 in a 5-guard lineup. I think Josh is the PERFECT zone-buster because of his passing ability (in addition to his scoring) and knew he’d have a great game tonight.
Motley simply isn’t as talented as JJ, so that’s part of it. Should Motley have known how to pass out of a double-team? Yeah, probably. But he just didn’t. I think that’s where the coaching comes from. At the end of the day, Motley’s a post player and it’s tough to post in a zone, particularly when double-teams are flying at you and you don’t know how to pass out of it.
Just playing devil’s advocate…

@globaljaybird I never said he did
