@FarmerJayhawk said in Possible Bowl Game?:

A couple reasons. The AD would lose money it first of all. Next, a lot of the players have finished their semesters and left town.

Point A doesn’t make sense if we get fined or would have gone anyways had we gone 6-6.

Reality is transfer portal ruined bowl games. It’s okay to say it.

Bowl games won’t be back next season. A cost of the playoffs combined with the transfer portal movement of 20+ players every year.

Playoffs make it a haves and have nots situation. When everyone got a consolation prize except two teams it made sense to play bowls. Now, you either made the playoffs or you didn’t.

Major casualty of the new ways

@Kcmatt7 we’re not going to get fined. A lot of smaller bowls are money losers for schools. Just not $500k bad. They’re just contractually obligated to go if they win 6 games.

@Kcmatt7 I’d bet a lot they will. ESPN makes a lot of money on them and they draw a spectacular audience relative to whatever else they’d put on. Even garbage bowls draw 3m+ viewers.

How does this play out? Anything further than iowa state and k state paying the $500k? Is it reasonable t o force schools to accept bowl invites at a financial loss? This is because some corporate sponsor wants to slap its name on a football game? Will the contractual obligation be renegotiated? Or litigation?

@FarmerJayhawk if they can’t get schools to play in them it’s kind of moot what the ratings are.

What bowl did KU turn down? Jeez, I wondered how good KU could/should be before the season. Then, hoped for bowl eligibility all season. Was very disappointed with our record and close losses. Now I hear we turned down a bowl game. I'm really struggling with the new reality of college sports. Why even bother? I have a lot of favorite authors. I'm going to find some new authors to follow and just check in on sports once in a while.

@stoptheflop if you have any recommended authors would be happy to have a discussion about that.

@stoptheflop It wasn't just KU that turned down bowl games Heck even Iowa State tuned down going to a bowl game and they were eight and four. , there were six other teams that turned down this same bowl. that KU did, I think if I read right Iowa St got fine 500.thousand for not going by the Big Twelve.

Iowa St gave reasons for not accepting a bowl was they felt because of Coaching situation a lot of players already headed home of Christmas Holidays Injured to players and such

The NCAA has just charged ahead with zero anticipation of consequences. The two team playoff made for a still exciting bowl season with major bowl games to be played mainly for pride and we fans loved it. Then they stretched it to four teams and it watered down the bowls just a bit. But still lots to play for. i was opposed to an expanded playoff and I predicted what is happening right now. Teams with 2-3 losses are complaining about being left out of the tournament. Well those teams are taking their ball and going home. The ugly exodus of guys abandoning their teams to work out for the pros further made the bowl season the ugly season. Portal, NIL, draft prep and no real plan to maintain the sport we've enjoyed for all of our lives. NCAA has to take action. Take scholarships from schools who turn down bowl bids. Eliminate about half of the bowl games that are silly. Open the portal after the NC game, not before. Fine players receiving $$ from bowl bound universities who abandon their teams to prepare for the draft. There's solutions out there to fix this.

Now they need to expand the playoffs ASAP and get the bowl sponsors to sponsor the first round games on campuses. Go to 16 and get rid of the bye games. Or expand to 24 and give the top 8 byes.

                                      Rock Chalk!

It's all about money and the more games the better but at the expense of the bowl game communities. Definitely get rid of the bye games as bskeet said.
