Wednesday afternoon, a report surfaced from CBSSports.com’s Gary Parish that five-star Callaway (Jackson, Miss.) guard Malik Newman intends to publicly commit to Mississippi State on Friday.
Newman, who had visits scheduled with Ole Miss and Mississippi State for Wednesday, says he’s still deciding.
“No, I haven’t committed,” Newman told the Gannett-owned Clarion-Ledger. “Right now I’m down to my final four schools – Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kansas and Kentucky.”

Parrish’s report cited “multiple staffs involved in Newman’s recruitment” including two coaches who said Newman to Mississippi State is “done.”
Newman, again, refuted that information.
“When I sit down with my parents, if I think Mississippi State is the right place, then that’s where I’ll pick,” he said. “Like I said, right now I’m down to my final four schools. I don’t really care what the media is saying. I think wherever is the best spot for me is where I’ll pick.”
Last week at practices for the Jordan Brand Classic, Newman told reporters that he plans to only sign scholarship papers with the school he commits to.
Rumors sparked on social media that Newman has already sent his papers in to Mississippi State. His father, Horatio Webster, denied that claim.
“Who the hell would fill it out for him?” Webster said. “The scholarship papers are on the dresser in my house.”
Newman says he still plans to commit during a private ceremony at 1 p.m. ET on Friday. His commitment will be live streamed at http://www.clarionledger.com

Once he’s declared he’s old news except to the school he declares to. This way he gets to stay in the spot light a little longer…

Of course, he’s been in the limelight for years its how he got the ego he has. I just think its funny how people come out publicly and deny the reports that get put out and then when they announce people were right to begin with.
It’s happened plenty this off-season. Zimmerman, Rondae Jefferson going pro, add Newman to list and others. Watch Jaylen Brown deny the report about Adidas & the Cal/Michigan rumor be true as well.

@BeddieKU23 Zimmerman knew all along, stringing everyone along. How good will that team be? Didn’t one their big guys declare yesterday? Are they ever on tv?

Being from the East Coast the only time I’ve ever seen UNLV on tv was against KU last year.
UNLV didn’t get better getting Zimmerman when Wood declared yesterday. He had no choice but to go, because they had 4 to 5 front court players. Wood has a lot of potential but could have really shot up the charts with another season. But because a 5 star player came in playing the same position he had to go.

Whole lotta drama for nothing. Should’ve just declared when the rumors surfaced. Oh well, I’d rather land an OAD at a position of need (the 5). Hopefully no OADs no matter whom else Bill signs. Diallo come on down for 2!

KU misses on another recruit!

@Statmachine Truth is, KU misses on almost all of the recruits they target. As does UNC, Duke, MichSt, etc… The only program that has had astonishing hauls is Kentucky, under John Calipari. But they are beatable too…

@Statmachine I’m not sure I saw the connection between the Sasha airball, other than yeah, it was a “KU miss”. I thought a bigger embarrassment at the FT line was Brady Morningstar doing his botched pull-it-back-but-oops-its-already-gone FT attempt on a technical FT (no one but him across halfcourt) at Texas on natl TV…
Or maybe the MOST embarrassing was for the 2003 Jayhawks as a team to lose the NC to Syracuse from the FT line. Won the game in live action, lost the game on the FT line. Main culprits would be Nick Collison, Keith Langford, etc…
Sasha Kaun was a limited-skill role player.

I seem to remember some one calculating the points KU scored after grabbing the rebounds from the missed free throws at that game and it more than compensated for the missed free throws…just sayin’…

That would make it a monster recruiting class for KU. ESPN’s Biancardi had him down to Michigan and Cal but Brown denied it was the case, but with UCLA in the mix it sounds like he likes the West Coast.
