Not so fun with the box score!

      FGs

      Tre White β€” a shocking 1-3

Melvin Council β€” a not so shocking 4-13

      Elmarko Jackson β€” a pleasing 4-9

      Box score invisibility

Bryson Tiller β€” did he even play?

Jayden Dawson β€” I thought in the summer he was an obvious starter. Maybe now losing playing time. He seems brain dead.

      FTs

      KU β€” 15-21

      UConn β€” 6-8

That’s a winning formula. What the heck happened??

Big issue with most of the players is that they are streaky shooters.. You can see guys get hot and reel off a string of points and then cool off and it then takes a couple of empty possessions before they realize they aren't hot anymore -- The streakers: Council, Jamari, Elmarko, Tiller, Dawson, Kohl. The less streaky are Tre and Flory.

Streaky players can do as much damage as they do good if you don't have good offensive rebounding or some good half court go-to sets for when they cool off.

Really poor shooting game and 35% isn't going to cut it against most teams. 5 total made baskets in the 2nd half which is crazy to even think of. Didn't see a lot of adjustments and if there was, they were ineffective. They just laid an egg at home and beat themselves. Defense held Uconn to 61 pts (season low) & took them out of their rhythm for most of it.

The offense just isn't good as usual, currently 57th on Kenpom. We haven't had a top 25 offense in over 3 years now. Last night they made layups look like rocket science. DP would certainly improve this offense to some degree but expecting a wholesale difference is dreamland.

Tiller had one of his "down games". Dawson has played sporadically due to injuries and what not but clearly is not an impact player here.

@BeddieKU23 Idk adding the best PG in CBB to any team would bring a top 60 offense at least into the top 25. Maybe DP falls short of that, but he has been as good as advertised in what we have seen so far so not putting it out of the question.

At worst, we have a similar offensive output for 35 mins of the game, but instead of council shooting a low percentage 3 in the last few mins of the game to keep us in it, we have DP and Flory running a P&R and actually have a decent change of scoring. Love what we are getting from council but iso ball with the clock winding down is not his game and not what he was brought in for.

@rockchalkjayhawk I thought we were going to pull it out until about 3 mins left when we started missing FTs right as we had a chance to tie. Then uconn hits the deep 3 and KU's offense went into desperation mode too early.

Could have used some mbiya with tiller quiet, and def some more wario rosario. Effectively 6 man rotation is no way to live.

Starters played too many minutes and we didn’t rebound

Neither Peterson or Council is a traditional PG, they are both Combo Guards. I agree Peterson will make a difference; I'm just not sure how much. I don't personally think it brings us from the 50's where we've been for 3 years straight to the Top 25 but I guess we'll see, if he ever does play again here. We have such a small sample base to make any kind of accurate opinion on. Theoretically he should make a tangible difference.

We played with the intensity and effort to win the game on defense but the offensive struggles were really highlighted, once again. They were there last week against ND and Cuse but we were able to survive. They got to find consistency scoring the ball regardless of whether DP is in the lineup or not. We don't have the personnel to survive 35% shooting nights especially when a majority of the misses were right at the rim. We played to our identity last night but didn't execute enough.

I think coach Hurley had a perplexed or stunned look on his face. UConn mostly looked just average. It's a fluke loss. Bricking lay ups even to the point of air balling is funny is retrospect. What I really want to see is this team keeping up the effort on defense. It's effective and I'm proud of them. This team has losses to NC, Duke and UConn and played them even 90% of the time. If Peterson is really good we could beat all of them.

I just want to shoutout to Jamari again. With the game on the line with 30 seconds to go he drove to the basket and drew contact. It went uncalled, but that doesn't mean he doesn't deserve credit for the clutch play he made.

@Jayhawk_69 Agree. Jamari was fouled with the body. That was a foul most of the time. At that point, it needed to be an 'and-1' for us to have a shot at the win and he didn't make the shot, so it didn't matter quite as much. The officiating continues to be splotchy in the NCAA.

Our defense was good enough last night to make us competitive with any team in the B12. We'll need that to be a regular occurrence and not just something we trot out for top 10 teams if we want to be competing for a league title.
