JJ Starling in the portal from Notre Dame. Yes and yes
Syra and cuse
Already confirmed. Nothin’ to see here apparently.
Was done before he entered the portal. Much like a certain player currently collecting NIL checks in California and KU.
Pretty sure about Ingram?
-
-
@dylans Feel good about him but not him in this case. Think if we do get both, those are our starters at the 3/4 next year. Good kids, smart, tough.
-
I still have eligibility left guys, should I enter?
-
@kjayhawks Since I played 1 year of college hoops at a tiny college I probably can announce I’m entering the portal.
-
@wissox let’s open a dual recruitment and see what happens lol
-
@kjayhawks I’m slow, short, and old so hopefully you can be my decoy so my deadly jumper is wiiidddeee open
-
KU is losing 3 for sure to the NBA. We have 3 recruits coming in.
With the scholarship reduction, at least 1 player has to transfer out to be in compliance next season. Cam Martin, Zach Clemence, and Kyle Cuffe all seem like safe bets at this point to leave. KU would have 2 roster spots to play with in regards to Adams and the portal for next season if those 3 all transfer out.
I’d very strongly prefer Adams stay in the '24 class and Self go get two big time scorers at the wing and 4 spots because KJ and Udeh are not playable next to each other for long stretches. Neither has any range and don’t compliment Self’s desire for a 4 guard line up.
If we get more transfers, Rice, Pettiford, and Yesufu all seem like possibilities. I’d love to see Rice stay because he has the possibility to fill one of those positions of need as a high scoring wing, but not something I’d be willing to bet on for next season though at this point.
If one of those 3 also transfer out, then having Marcus Adams reclassify and come in as a back up would make more sense.
-
Another Red Raider in the portal, this time KJ Allen. They have a mess on their hands

Who are you talking about… Ingram and?
-
@Woodrow He isn’t in the portal yet so I’m behaving. Barely. Kinda.
-
Skyy Clark to Louisville. Match made in heaven
-
Kowacie Reeves in the Portal for Florida, formely a 4 star prospect. I have been intrigued with this one for a bit. So Athletic, can shoot a bit. Hasn’t had a coach to put it all together but a kid with high upside I think still.
-
More Power 5 transfers
Dontrez Styles- UNC
Roosevelt Wheeler- Louisville
Niels Lane- Florida

Nope nope and nope.

Whoever said Jaemyn Brakefield above, I agree with that. He’d be nice fit here. Not a sniper like Gradey, but 35% from deep is good enough to keep defenses honest. Don’t think I’d want him headlining the transfer class, but as the no. 2 guy, he’d be a nice get since he’s a proven double digit scorer in a P5 conference. Biggest downside to Brakefield is he’s not a good defender at all.
-
Another wing I would be extremely interested in is Chris Ledlum from Harvard. Not a 3 point shooter (sub 30%), but averaged 18.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg last season. He’s also an above average defender. I doubt he’d duplicate those numbers here against Big 12 competition, but he could be a #2 scorer for KU next season. Coming from Harvard, you know he’s smart and would likely be able to pick up Self’s system pretty quickly.

I LOVE his skill set. Would imagine that he will be in high demand.

He was on my mid season watch list. I have not heard that we contacted him.
I know of two that we have contacted and are serious about but neither is in the portal yet. Both rate higher than anyone currently in the portal if you look at evanmiya.com One name has been mentioned directly on the board (Harrison Ingram) the other I think has circulated to most via dms.

I’ve seen Ingram’s name, and I think I know the other name you’re talking about, but could be someone else. I’m just not that enamored with Ingram. He not a great shooter, and is a bad defender. He is a good passer and sets others up well and would be an solid option in pick and roll, but I think there’s better options out there that we could attract if we made a push for a 4.

Big no for me. Also have to think Georgia is the favorite there.
-
Imo he’s much better then some bench options we have currently. He’s not what we need in terms of ready made scorers. I do think he has some potential to be really good in the right system. Certainly Georgia should be in that
-
Just under 600 in one week in the portal
Roughly a dozen teams have lost anywhere from 6 to 8 players to the portal each. Pretty insane turnover.
-
I hate the portal. This idiocy has to stop. Make kids have to sit a year. It never made sense to me why they changed the rules. It’s ruining basketball and it’s going to cause coaches to leave. Not to sound like an arrogant blue blood fan, but why would a kid get a coveted schollie to KU and then leave?
-
Portal or not, I like the idea of transfer without having to wait.
If coaches can move instantaneously without any warning for higher pay, players should be able to do the same.
Many players develop relationships with coaches during recruiting and if coaches move on players should be allowed as well and not get penalized.

It’s benefiting KU greatly. Next year would be guaranteed to be unpleasant with the old portal rules.
The whole thing is a business and always has been. Contracts are year to year. KU definitely chose to not renew some contracts this year. Guys that should have been asked to leave after last season IMO, which we felt this year with the lack of a bench.
@AsadZ Agree.
Some players do come for the school but that is much rarer. It’s typically about the coach in addition to $.
-
I get the frustration with the portal.
I think it has done good, obviously the underbelly can be no fun when it comes to NIL impact and tampering etc. I do think it’s benefitted KU positively. You still have to have a program built which Self has so I don’t see a big issue in our view.
-
@wissox I hate the lack of loyalty, but it goes both ways. I’m just glad that KU is in a position to take advantage of the transfer rules. Imagine if you’re saint marys school for the blind and you develop Shaq for a couple years before Duke buys him in free agency to win a championship.
-
@AsadZ So if a coach leaves then those players of his and of the team he’s moving to are eligible to transfer without sitting a year. Is that a solution? IDK, but some of these teams are like the Pirates of MLB which is now all the power players in the league’s farm system. I’d be pissed to be Bob Huggins in developing someone like Tschiebwe and see him move to one of the blue bloods (I know, try to hold back our laughter).
-
In most cases when a coach leaves, those players will receive waivers to transfer regardless of their transfer status before that (had they used the 1-time waiver). I haven’t seen or remember an example of a player being denied a transfer due to that issue.
It probably will happen where a player gets poached from KU in the future that we don’t want to lose but that hasn’t happened yet. I think it’s important to note that KU’s program is desired and we have the reputation to recruit talent here. As long as Self is here I imagine that will continue.
-
@BeddieKU23 I know we’re desired but it’s program players, roll players that are really important too. Those are guys who get 5-10 minutes. Joe Yesufu comes to mind. People saying he gone. He’s valuable to our team even though he’s not a starter or a star.
-
@wissox Joe two years in still doesn’t really know the system. Self doesn’t like that kind of thing typically.
-
Well I think you’ll see that with Bobby & Zach potentially. 2 guys that did not develop into roles they were expected to have coming into the year returning for another year. Neither is set in stone but the intel suggest it could happen.
Yesufu is also a case of not developing where they thought he could get. He also played out of position this year due to his limited skill set. Self signed 3 guys from the High School ranks. The writing is on the wall there imo.
I agree program/roll players are important and I think Self values that too. It’s hard to keep them now with the portal. I don’t see Self pushing players out like other programs might do. That doesn’t sound like a Bill thing in my opinion. Bill will keep the culture good where the guys that want to be here stay and the ones that don’t, have the option to find a better fit.
I do think Bill will attack this year with careful intent. McCullar was that guy last year. He’ll adapt like always.
-
Don’t know if we’d be interested in anyone but most Providence players and recruits will end up available with Cooley moving to Georgetown.
-
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, Zach and Bobby, I agree, not even showing enough to really want them still around. But guys like Joe are useful. Maybe he longs for the Drake days where he was the man, or wants another chance playing a more limited roll but maybe winning another national championship.

To be clear, this isn’t me. But I do think kj makes more threes next year than this year.

Not everyone has the same priorities. These guys are still extremely competitive at the end of the day and if they aren’t playing the minutes they think they should be, they will find a place where they will get minutes.
-
Dang, i was worried about shooting 3s before this season began.
Next season i’m scared poopless about simply scoring!
We better have the 1990 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels team ready to use up some eligibility at KU! We’ll only need to score a few FTs to win games

I do know Mike. He used to live in Houston before he retired and moved elsewhere and was active in our alumni group. Mike is a good person, but can sometimes get overzealous about players at times, especially if they’re from Texas.
If KJ were able to develop into even a 30% outside shooter, he’d be playable at the 4 spot for longer stretches because he could hit a top of the key 3.
-
-
Watching some Harrison Ingram highlights. There is a moment where he gets the ball at the three point line then backs his man down all the way to the basket and gets an and one. LOL.
-
The insanity is beginning. I don’t even want to keep track of this lunacy. I’m immature and don’t like my school so I’m leaving. Wake me up when baseball season is over and I’ll see who’s on which team. I don’t see how anyone can say this is good for college basketball.
