2023 Transfer Portal

  • @BShark

Imo he’s much better then some bench options we have currently. He’s not what we need in terms of ready made scorers. I do think he has some potential to be really good in the right system. Certainly Georgia should be in that

  • Just under 600 in one week in the portal

Roughly a dozen teams have lost anywhere from 6 to 8 players to the portal each. Pretty insane turnover.

  • I hate the portal. This idiocy has to stop. Make kids have to sit a year. It never made sense to me why they changed the rules. It’s ruining basketball and it’s going to cause coaches to leave. Not to sound like an arrogant blue blood fan, but why would a kid get a coveted schollie to KU and then leave?

  • Portal or not, I like the idea of transfer without having to wait.

If coaches can move instantaneously without any warning for higher pay, players should be able to do the same.

Many players develop relationships with coaches during recruiting and if coaches move on players should be allowed as well and not get penalized.

It’s benefiting KU greatly. Next year would be guaranteed to be unpleasant with the old portal rules.

The whole thing is a business and always has been. Contracts are year to year. KU definitely chose to not renew some contracts this year. Guys that should have been asked to leave after last season IMO, which we felt this year with the lack of a bench.

    @AsadZ Agree.

Some players do come for the school but that is much rarer. It’s typically about the coach in addition to $.

  • @wissox

I get the frustration with the portal.

I think it has done good, obviously the underbelly can be no fun when it comes to NIL impact and tampering etc. I do think it’s benefitted KU positively. You still have to have a program built which Self has so I don’t see a big issue in our view.

  • @wissox I hate the lack of loyalty, but it goes both ways. I’m just glad that KU is in a position to take advantage of the transfer rules. Imagine if you’re saint marys school for the blind and you develop Shaq for a couple years before Duke buys him in free agency to win a championship.

  • @AsadZ So if a coach leaves then those players of his and of the team he’s moving to are eligible to transfer without sitting a year. Is that a solution? IDK, but some of these teams are like the Pirates of MLB which is now all the power players in the league’s farm system. I’d be pissed to be Bob Huggins in developing someone like Tschiebwe and see him move to one of the blue bloods (I know, try to hold back our laughter).

  • @wissox

In most cases when a coach leaves, those players will receive waivers to transfer regardless of their transfer status before that (had they used the 1-time waiver). I haven’t seen or remember an example of a player being denied a transfer due to that issue.

It probably will happen where a player gets poached from KU in the future that we don’t want to lose but that hasn’t happened yet. I think it’s important to note that KU’s program is desired and we have the reputation to recruit talent here. As long as Self is here I imagine that will continue.

  • @BeddieKU23 I know we’re desired but it’s program players, roll players that are really important too. Those are guys who get 5-10 minutes. Joe Yesufu comes to mind. People saying he gone. He’s valuable to our team even though he’s not a starter or a star.

  • @wissox Joe two years in still doesn’t really know the system. Self doesn’t like that kind of thing typically.

  • @wissox

Well I think you’ll see that with Bobby & Zach potentially. 2 guys that did not develop into roles they were expected to have coming into the year returning for another year. Neither is set in stone but the intel suggest it could happen.

Yesufu is also a case of not developing where they thought he could get. He also played out of position this year due to his limited skill set. Self signed 3 guys from the High School ranks. The writing is on the wall there imo.

I agree program/roll players are important and I think Self values that too. It’s hard to keep them now with the portal. I don’t see Self pushing players out like other programs might do. That doesn’t sound like a Bill thing in my opinion. Bill will keep the culture good where the guys that want to be here stay and the ones that don’t, have the option to find a better fit.

I do think Bill will attack this year with careful intent. McCullar was that guy last year. He’ll adapt like always.

  • Don’t know if we’d be interested in anyone but most Providence players and recruits will end up available with Cooley moving to Georgetown.

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah, Zach and Bobby, I agree, not even showing enough to really want them still around. But guys like Joe are useful. Maybe he longs for the Drake days where he was the man, or wants another chance playing a more limited roll but maybe winning another national championship.

To be clear, this isn’t me. But I do think kj makes more threes next year than this year.

    Hopkins.

  • Cam Martin officially in the portal.

  • Bijan Cortes of OU in, 2nd guard to leave this offseason

Not everyone has the same priorities. These guys are still extremely competitive at the end of the day and if they aren’t playing the minutes they think they should be, they will find a place where they will get minutes.

  • Dang, i was worried about shooting 3s before this season began.

Next season i’m scared poopless about simply scoring!

We better have the 1990 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels team ready to use up some eligibility at KU! We’ll only need to score a few FTs to win games 🙂

I do know Mike. He used to live in Houston before he retired and moved elsewhere and was active in our alumni group. Mike is a good person, but can sometimes get overzealous about players at times, especially if they’re from Texas.

If KJ were able to develop into even a 30% outside shooter, he’d be playable at the 4 spot for longer stretches because he could hit a top of the key 3.

  • @BShark said in 2023 Transfer Portal:

    @jayballer67 MJ

Thank you - -yes pretty sure MJ is also gone

  • Watching some Harrison Ingram highlights. There is a moment where he gets the ball at the three point line then backs his man down all the way to the basket and gets an and one. LOL.

  • The insanity is beginning. I don’t even want to keep track of this lunacy. I’m immature and don’t like my school so I’m leaving. Wake me up when baseball season is over and I’ll see who’s on which team. I don’t see how anyone can say this is good for college basketball.

I don’t actually tweet anything. I just follow folks and read stuff. But it’s the same as my handle here.

  • @wissox

Did you enjoy the previous rules that made them sit a year in only 2 sports? Do you just miss the old ways?

This is the era where players have leverage over their own futures. I think we saw enough decades of coaches and the NCAA controlling things with too much power if you ask me.

  • Approaching 700 in, will pass it today

4 more coming from KU alone I bet.

    Lots of non-contributors this year.

  • Wishing the best for any of our departures. Team chemistry was excellent this year. Lots of drama across college bball; not our guys. Super fun, classy team to root for. Always Jayhawks in my book, every one.

Ehhhhhhhhh ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Nothing gets out with Self. I won’t bad mouth on the way out but I’ll just say some things should be obvious wrt MJ Rice.

  • @BShark d1 ball punched him in the mouth and he didn’t get up and punch back

Cuffe, Clemence, mj, one of Joe or Bobby

We gonna lose that 1 scholarship and still have room for 2 solid transfers with Marcus Adams reclassifying to 2023 otherwise we’d had room for 3 (someone confirm my math)

If we have 5 out we can take 3 in.

Juan/KJ/Zuby/Udeh/one of Bob or Joe/4 FR is 9.

  • @BShark that lineup makes me feel ill. Thank god for Bill Self, no one is winning with that group that isn’t destined for the hall of fame.

Very incomplete line-up. That wasn’t really in any order either.

Yeah I miss the rule where they had to sit. Made them really consider their decisions wisely before committing. It’s life. How many times are you going to get hired if you keep switching jobs? Not too many I’d guess because you’re going to get asked why have you worked two other jobs in the last 2 years?

I see ‘once a Jayhawk always a Jayhawk’ comments and I disagree. When you quit on our team, while I wouldn’t stop them, I’m not going to remember you as a Jayhawk nearly as much as a guy who gave blood sweat and tears towards the success of the program.

So go ahead and enjoy the revolving door of college sports. Not me.

I would be for a system that gives players leverage but also allows teams that invest large amounts of money in a kid to make it worth their time to do so as well.

  • @BShark even better bring in 3 studs and let’s go win another title

  • @wissox this was Bill’s opposition as a guy like Russell Robinson never happens because he transfers yet he’d say sticking it out ended up being best for him.

That story doesn’t exist but I do ride the line that if coaches can move right away players should have the same power

  • @wissox

I suppose we’ll disagree here some then, that’s okay, it’s a message board and we all have our thoughts. I respect yours so I was interested in why this new era isn’t your cup of tea. Understand where you’re coming from now.

I wouldn’t say I enjoy this revolving door, I think it’s kind of exciting for KU fans since I think we’ll always be in a position to change the roster in a way that keeps us at the top competitively. We’re doing good in NIL, we have a great program with a great coach and it’s a place kids want to be.

I think the sit-out year was an abuse of power that was begging for change in the 2 popular money-making sports.

If you’re looking for someone to blame, or where it may have started, blame the coaches that created commitment issues. This is a business glorified as something else. Coaches switch jobs for money, position, you name it and leave the kids they supposedly cared an awful lot about in the wind.

Not all Jayhawks are equal, agree there. I wouldn’t consider Grimes a lifer or Bryce Thompson. But Kevin McCullar who traded teams in his own conference is a certified star in my mind for the rest of my life. Perhaps its where they end for me that matters most. The one’s that stick 4/5 years are legends which is becoming increasingly rare.

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah, I’m not mad, just disagreeing with you. You’re contributions to this message board are A+

  • @wissox

    Same, enjoy your contributions here!

Now if we ever lose important player(s) for whatever reason to the portal I’m sure I’ll feel a certain way towards it.

  • @wissox I’d propose an NCAA rule change regarding NIL moneys - create a NIL “salary” cap that increases for each year in school as well as for each year that a player is at the same institution. Might help with competitive balance and would incentivize loyalty.

  • I became a fan of KU bball in Selfs first year. That was the year my wife and I started dating again. So i would say i am as much a Bill Self fan as I am a KU fan. I didnt like Roy until 2008 when he wore a Kansas pin after losing to us.

Anyway, I guess Im saying that i see everything Kansas mostly from Selfs perspective, certainly almost entirely from the perspectives of the staff + the players, and thats probably why i really like the rule changes.

  • It felt incongruous to be a decent honest person and a fierce competitor as a coach before the rule changes.

    But thats what Self is.

Now he can be who he is. Moreso anyway.
