THANK YOU, JAYHAWKS

  • I turn games off like last night. I was so disgusted at halftime I watched MASH on my DVR. At the end of the episode I checked the score and we were down by 13 early in the 2nd, I thought well that’s doable and I got back into it. Glad I did. But I seriously wonder why I get so worked up? My heart is strong, so not too worried about that. I’ve got to chill more. I do find not live chatting helps me to relax more because some people help my nerves to get more frayed!

  • From MSN.com

“Kansas-UNC Game Is Most-Watched NCAA Basketball Final In Cable TV History“

An average of 18.1 million people watched the Kansas Jayhawks’ thrilling comeback victory against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Monday, making it the most-viewed NCAA men’s basketball championship game to air on cable television, Turner Sports announced Tuesday—outpacing last year’s broadcast despite not appearing on network TV.

Monday’s matchup was the third most-watched college basketball game in cable television history, falling behind Saturday night’s Duke/UNC Final Four matchup (which drew 18.5 million viewers) and 2015’s Wisconsin/Kentucky Final Four game (which holds the cable record with 22.6 million viewers, according to Associated Press).

  • @Gorilla72 Such a stupid thing to set a record for because these games should be on free TV. Mark “Kansas City Jayhawks” Emmerich of the NCAA I guess is responsible for this fiasco which cuts out the poor and many elderly like my parents. But screw all those people, highest bidder gets to put it on their relatively obscure channel.

  • @wissox it’s a pretty normal channel here.

  • I don’t know how any of you can not watch the whole game😠. We were at the last border war, down 19 at half. Best game ever. Saw the great come back playing WV, fans(?) were leaving. Some came back. Jayhawks are a great comeback team! Each to his own!

  • I never doubted this teams ability to win last night. It wasnt certain, but even down at the half, we had the deeper more experienced roster that played better all season including the tournament. We had the more experienced coach. And we had played like horseshit.

  • Can’t lie I had some bad memories pop up at halftime especially as the deficit reminded me of past tournament losses. It took about 10 minutes to recalibrate myself and realize we got 20 more minutes left, make the most of it, enjoy the moment and most importantly we can still win. In the game chat there was several that kept the faith and I’m appreciative to those that never lose that eternal optimism. This was a 2nd half team all year long. Half-Time adjustments are literally one of Self’s greatest attributes as a coach and it paid off again.

I was really young for 88, wasn’t even a fan yet. 2008 was amazing especially after the heartbreak of 03. The gap since though has been tough and you wonder if it will ever happen. This championship will be tough to top for me personally. With everything this program has gone through the past 5-6 years it just means way more.

Still don’t have a voice, my voice box is hurting.

  • It is impossible to be down 15 at half and not have those thoughts. But, I kept thinking of the Miami game. 10 minutes into the 2nd half, I knew we were going to win.

  • @Jethro

In the Miami game we were only down 6, little different in a championship game down 15 I thought. I knew we’d rally but you wonder how much that rally would take out of them to get there. We just played a nearly flawless half again to get it done. Those guys were a true team. I’ll never forget them. In fact its incredibly sad that will be the last game that group plays together.

If they didn’t show some NCAA each March and an occasional baseball game in the summer, I’d never watch TBS/TNT. And poor people besides those who choose not to pay a ton of money to watch TV didn’t have that opportunity. It’s really dumb to put it on a relatively obscure channel like TBS.

Why get mad at us who choose not to watch a game like that? It’s no fun to sit there all pissed off.

  • @wissox

believe CBS/TBS owned by the same conglomerate which is why TBS had it this year in some contractual thing

Don’t know that I’ve ever turned off a game because we were losing. I did put my phone down and stop reading twitter and the live chat here. I decided, I have one more half of basketball to watch this team play and win or lose they will have my full attention for the last hour or so of the season. I thought for sure they would at least mount something of a comeback at some point. My cousin reminded me at the half that the last time North Carolina played a big 12 team they gave up a 25 point lead and the last time KU played an ACC team we played the best second half of all time. I told him at the end of the game that Miami game was the SECOND best 2nd half of all time now!

CBS and TBS are not under the umbrella. CBS is owned by Paramount and TBS is owned by Warner. The NCAA opened up to another broadcast partner a few years back because CBS doesn’t have the capability to broadcast every game which meant the NCAA was losing out on another revenue stream since the NCAA Tournament is how the NCAA is funded, at least the vast majority of their income. The Final Four alternates between CBS and TBS now because of that new contract.

  • Personally I was glad it was on TBS!!! CBS doesn’t come in over the air (no cable) and it streams rather poorly with many service interruptions. TBS streams beautifully with no issues every time here. CBS’s crappy service has ruined several games for me.

I had to stream it (I saved some free march madness stream time for the FF) but then my internet cut out before the final possession. Had to listen on the radio.

  • @BShark aaaaarggg!!! Saved you watching Harris run out of bounds. Painful, thank goodness KU was up 3. I was begging for a foul on the inbounds pass. Bill will never do it though.

  • Yeah if he wasn’t doing it there, it’s never happening. Thank goodness for Braun’s great defensive footwork and length there.

  • What cracked me up was Manek thru the ball out with 4.2 seconds remaining, but after KU inbounded and turned it over UNC got the ball back with 4.3. Drama. Probably correct, but I was beginning to wonder how long the game could go. 😂

  • @wissox I’m not mad at you, just can’t understand.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Well, that emoji you used did look like what I would describe as an angry scowl! But I agree with you–never give up!

@dylans It went out at 4.6 seconds. Here is a screenshot after Manek’s turnover during the loooonnnnngggggg period before Harris got the ball OB. They explained in the broadcast that a minimum of .3 secs must occur on any inbounds play with possession, so thus the .3 sec change.

Incidentally, there is a 17 minute video replay of the final 3 mins at the NCAA website:

  • After the Miami game, I really don’t understand how anyone gave up or couldn’t watch. I basically told the three people I was watching with to get tf out of my face if they thought it was over at the half. (my wife and our two best friends). They stayed, and it was really quiet for a while. Then we went down to Mass Street and high fived a few thousand people. We’re still friends and I’m still married. It was a risk I was willing to take.

  • At halftime, I was pretty concerned. We had guests over – a friend who is a Duke fan who really hates UNC – and I didn’t want to get too morbid. I held it together and told them that we had comeback from a bigger deficit on the road at K-State earlier in the season. For some reason, that game came to mind. I listened to it on the radio and was just beside myself and almost turned it off… but I stuck with it and when they came all the way back I thought this might be a special team. That said, on Monday night, as I recalled the K-State comeback, I also quickly realized the stark contrast between KSU and UNC. My spirits were on a rollercoaster, not knowing if I should be optimistic or pessimistic.

Then when they clawed all the way back to within a few points, I couldn’t help but wonder if they could sustain it, or if they were spent from just getting to that point.

Once we were in the dogfight to the finish, I got pretty… ah, vocal… about the officiating. At one point, I directed some pretty choice words at a pretty high volume, with kids around. Got a few glances, and, yeah… I took it a bit too far. But the officiating got a bit better after that.

    Alas, the rest is history.

The yelling that followed were screams of jubilation.

  • @DanR haha you made my day

  • @DanR

    Glad it all worked out!
