@BShark you hinting at something here?
Dream is getting JW (seems most likely) and CB (not real likely) plus Hunter to start and boot somebody who has no chance of playing real minutes this year
McCullar looks okay but he’s not some great athlete or anything. What’s the draw? I haven’t looked him up much.

I think he’s a better fit for Bill than Mosley but in a vacuum and for our needs next year I prefer Mosley. Smart, versatile player. Played a bit out of position for Tech last year at times and was also playing hurt: https://www.lubbockonline.com/videos/sports/college/red-raiders/2022/02/15/texas-tech-coach-mark-adams-provides-injury-update-kevin-mccullar/6803103001/
As a wing for us I think he would be decent. But I only want him if CB leaves (likely, as you said).
I still expect Jalen back.
Complete gut feeling but I think if we land Hunter, we see one of our guards transfer because Hunter is a guy that will play big minutes.
-
Guessing…
McCullar - Kansas
Mosley - Mississippi State
-
Tyrese Hunter to Texas could happen soon.
-
Watching McCullar keep two athletes on the bench is going to make for a long season.
Hoping I’m very wrong and he surprises.
-
@BShark thanks for the breakdown.
Based on your two recent posts above that sounds like the worst outcome imaginable.
Hunter and Carr together at Texas to go up against Juan and Bobby…
McCullar to keep Dick or Rice on the bench more isn’t ideal.

The craziest thing is that Bill seemingly prefers McCullar to Mosley. He sees things differently that’s for sure.
I am high on Bobby though. He will do exactly what the staff asks and I think he will be fine off the ball. He isn’t a terrible shooter by any means.
-
Possible visitors tomorrow: Hunter, Mosley
-
@BShark I think I’m doubtful cause we’ve seen so little of any of them. I know Bobby goes balls to wall, but he was always hurt. ZC had 2 great 3’s and maybe 2 awesome boards. I love KJ can play D, he did win a 3 pt contest for the boys and girls contest! maybe more there than I know! I think the frosh will get more time than you think! 🫣 I’m fine with being wrong, just hope everyone is working really hard in the summer, no days off!

Disagree a lot. I think we are in deep trouble if that happens for reasons I outlined earlier. I think we add a couple guys that are in their 4th or 5th year of college ball though. “Get old, stay old”.
Zach will be our best center next year.
-
@BShark you mean this coming year? I can’t see it.
-
If we add some experienced decent guys that will help. I’m sure Self has something in mind but TT guy was not great against us.

I think we are in trouble if one of our 5-star wings isn’t getting 20+ mpg and making a case to move into the starting lineup.
But one of the reasons KU was so good this last season was depth. Weathered injuries from Bobby and Remy. JCL was hurt a bit. Och missed a game. Jalen missed games early.
We need the bench pieces to be even better this year, especially if we are losing two 1st round picks the way we are. We may need to ride the hot hand a little more than we did last season.

I think one of the wings can get in that range sure.

Ok, let’s look at a potential starting lineup then…
Harris — defender, not a great scorer
McCullar — defender, picks up slop on offense. Not great from 3
Dick — Assuming he doesn’t play D well. gotta be a scorer, but a frosh.
Wilson — volume scorer? rebounder. Defense suspect at times
Zach — TBD. He’s gotta rebound and score
That lineup has decent 6-6ish size at the 2-4 spots. Zach has size.
Scoring, shooting a concern.

Oops, sorry. This is the transfer portal thread…don’t wanna go off topic too far

Big visitor tomorrow…
-
@BShark hoping it’s Hunter
If we landed Hunter what’s starting lineup? Juan Hunter ??? Jalen Zach
Should be but won’t: Hunter Rice Dick Jalen Zach

It is Hunter, I wasn’t going to share until it was posted by reporters.

When I said awhile ago everyone be patient, things will get worked out, this is what I meant. The staff is being extremely methodical in recruiting transfers, and that approach is getting reciprocated.

No Mosely. It won’t be too late to circle back if there’s a spot, but they’re locked in on Hunter and McCullar.

KU’s call here. I really think he would’ve popped for us had we pushed.

I think that’s abundantly clear, after reading the MSU premium board on 247. They will be happy we passed.
-
Ok after reading this I’m sold. “ As a spot-up shooter, McCullar’s percentages become much more encouraging for his long-term projections. McCullar shot 42% on open catch-and-shoot threes, 35% overall on catch-and-shoot threes, and 35% on three-pointers in the halfcourt, per Synergy…”
“But my favorite part about watching Kevin this weekend was seeing his personality on and off the floor. My takeaway? McCullar will be a welcome addition to any locker room.
One instance that showed me the kind of person that Kevin is was when McCullar’s teenage rebounder let him know that he couldn’t attend the nightly workout session because he had his own basketball game in the morning. McCullar responded by asking what time it was because he wanted to pull up and support him. That’s the kind of stuff you can’t see by watching game film.”

Texas Tech writer on 247 put in a KU pick for McCullar.
-
I… just wish I liked it. High floor/low ceiling type of move imo.

He’s a very Bill Self kind of player. It’s a good match.
-
Hunter down to Texas, KU, Zags.
Unofficially. ETA: Tennessee might be in there too
-
If it were me, I’d push for Hunter’s commitment in May, figure out how to add McCullar later this summer. There’s no rush, you can petition summer enrollment until mid-June. Or he could just wait until fall, which would be weird but given the awkward situation where someone leaves in late June it might have to work that way.
-
GET HUNTER. Me likey.
-
-
I made the 22-23 roster in NCAA 2k8 with Hunter and McCullar. My first half out against SC St. I was up 28-4, which seems about right

If we get those 2, our defense will be suffocating. I wasn’t excited about McCullar, but I think Bill could utilize him better than Tech did. I read he hit 42% from spot up 3s last year, so he could be quite a weapon if utilized properly.

I heard he wasn’t 100% last year. We might reel in a really good one with him. Lots to like. Maybe some of that quickness will come back.

If he can channel his inner Remy, I’m good with it.

Periodic dispatch from the little Apple… there’s a thread on their board basically accusing Lisa Braun of being a child predator for hosting Mosely and taking the now infamous photo. They hate us so much they can’t fathom anyone affiliated with KU would do something even remotely charitable.

I’m unsure that McCullar will be back. I think he could slide into a nice role at KU, but his versatility and NBA ready defense could mean he’s gone. As I have watched more of the pre-draft process, I think he’s more likely to go while Mosley is more likely to stay in college. If that ends up being the case, Mosley may be the guy anyway. I’d love to get Hunter, but I don’t know how he fits with Harris, Pettiford, and Yesufu, because one of that group won’t see the floor next year if Hunter comes. If that were to be the case, I’d hope Self has already told the odd man out because they will waste a year of eligibility next year in a logjammed backcourt.
-
@justanotherfan McCullar wasn’t invited to the next combine fwiw. Jalen was.
ETA: Also, we canceled Mosley’s visit which would have been yesterday. Now, if Jalen leaves along with CB that could change the calculus to where we could take McCullar and Mosley (if we miss on Hunter).
PPPS: We told Mosley we are “moving in another direction” so Self knows something we don’t!
-
McCullar to KU officially now.
-
A little surprised he popped this early. Barring something unexpected, the 22-23 team is final
