For lack of a better spot to put this...

Looks like the Big 12 just gained a great coach. Arizona State has hired a local guy to me: Randy Bennett from St. Mary's in California.

He's had a tremendous amount of success at St. Mary's, given it's a teeny tiny school. Maybe 2,500 students?

He's played with a small, shooting roster. He's played with a larger more plodding roster. He adjusts to his personnel.

Wish him luck, but not too much luck.

Bennett is a good guy and has had a strong Australian recruiting connection over the years. He's clearly looking for more resources. He's 63, so this may be his last stop. Real loss for the WCC which needed programs to compete with Gonzaga. But Gonzaga's leaving for the reborn Pac12, so it's going to be very hard for schools in the WCC to get an at-large bid going forward.

Will be interesting to see what Sendek at Santa Clara does...

@ROCKCHALK2025 the guy from Utah state wanted to finish out this season before heading to manhattan. KSU said no dice and moved down the list.

That guy dodged a bullet, big time.

If Bill Self retires, KU won't be the only blue blood hiring. North Carolina is now open as they have split with Hubert Davis.

It sounds like Tommy Lloyd is UNC's top choice followed by Billy Donovan and Dusty May.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Has KU ever had to 'split' with a coach? Roy left on his own terms, Larry did, not sure about Ted Owens, Phog I'm sure wasn't fired.

"Gong Owens!" was a rallying cry that started in, I believe, 1978 (year I graduated). Only KU coach to be fired (1983).

I've heard through a connection in Chapel Hill that TJ Otzelberger is/was first on the list.

His buyout is much lower then Lloyd as well

Looks like if Self retires, Tommy Lloyd won't be an option because there's language in his contract that prevents him from leaving Arizona for another school within the conference.

At this point, if Self does decide to retire and KU does end up looking outside the KU family, Otz would be my pick. His buyout is only $4 million and it sounds like ISU is struggling a bit with NIL because they don't have the wealthy donors that can fund NIL like other schools can.

I talked to a lawyer friend of mine earlier. A court might not look at it very fondly because non-competes generally aren’t enforceable if there’s no geographic issue (Tucson to LFK is a long way) and there are no trade secrets really at stake.

Even if a judge rules on it, by the time that lawsuit would make its way through to a conclusion, that's a lot of extra money and time wasted if KU tried pursuing it.

Was he hired while still in the Pac12? That also might make the restriction more dubious as this is not the same conference as was intended when he signed.

Like most cases, it would give both parties a very strong incentive to settle. It’s in nobody’s interest to drag it out.
