Not saying it will happen here, but really do not like to see people now taking their shots at him. He was a Republican, we know, doesn’t mean he was evil.

I met him at the state fair, he shook my hand. I remember he had a very dark green suit jacket on, very distinguished looking. I long for the days when members of Congress worked like senator Dole did, together for all of us!
-
It is always fair to remember both good and bad when someone dies. I hated his early senate campaigns when he was pretty vicious, and his failure to help fight the Republicans’ trend toward demonizing government workers when Reagan gave his “scariest words” speeches (“I’m from the government and I’m here to help you”). But his work on behalf of social welfare programs is often too unheralded. Too bad the Reps wouldn’t elect someone like him now.

Had the good fortune to meet Sen. Dole a few times when I was in politics. Such a nice guy, and funny as hell. We’re from the same part of the state so we always chatted about what restaurants we missed back home.
What a hero. What a life. Rest In Peace, Bob.

Also if you ever have time to kill on campus, the Dole Institute is a must see.
-
Agree on the Institute. First toured it just after the opening. Impressive.
When I was a kid he came to one of our church socials to press the flesh. Even though I rarely agreed with him politically, I appreciated the fact that he was able to at least listen to the other side. Also liked his sense of humor. We need more like him on both sides of the aisle.

he really did have a great sense of humor

@nwhawkfan I saw his sense of humor more after his presidential run. It was on Johnny Carson, and other late night shows. I think if more voters saw that side of him he would’ve had a better chance. He was a lil dry before. He was definitely more popular!

Did he have a stroke at some point ? - is that what was wrong with his right side or was it from the injury in the war ?

From the war. He actually wore inserts under his suit to make his upper arm look normal.

oh ok - so the arm was really baad then ? - -heard today something to that extent, me personally gonna miss the guy, didn’t know him personally but me – kinda liked the guy

Rt Shoulder was paralyzed
-
@jayballer67 Total loss of use of his right arm from the shrapnel wound suffered in Italy. Spent 3 years in hospitals recovering.
Dole carried a pen in his right hand to keep his fingers from splaying out, and to remind people to shake left-handed. He also never was able after the wound to cut a steak, tie his shoes or ties, or do anything requiring two arms. Amazing fortitude and resiliency.
-
Great tributes to a great man. No matter your political stance or status we all end up equal in the end. If only we could all see more eye to eye during.
Godspeed, sir.
-
@tis4tim I want YOU for President. Seriously. Good points.
