Winning the battle and the war at the same time? Debriefing:

  • Hield and Woodard combine for 70+ and add to that the ten point swing from Higgins and Co. in the first half, winning this game was Battle of Midway’esque. Guaran-damn-tee this is planned for in the trip to Norman (lame as it is).

D’vonte Graham has to have his shit together for us to cut down nets. If this wasn’t evident in the first half of this last game, I have nothing to say to you.

Perry is gonna go out like a true warrior. Every time I think I have never been more impressed by him, he surprises me. Tonight will be very hard to top.

C5 still an enigma. It made great plays when you didn’t expect, and biffed it when you thought it would close out the game. Maybe not playing POY Hield will help, but damn,

The chemistry, and solidarity between Graham Mason and Selden will be what decides this season fro KU. Perry Ellis will be the beneficiary of their due diligence.

  • @Mikey-P Devonte had a tough first half…played better in the OTs.

  • @Hawk8086 was awesome 2nd half

  • @Crimsonorblue22 After looking at the stats,…looks like he had 4 TOs the first half and 0 afterward…you are right…big improvement the rest of the way.

  • He seemed too ampted by the atmosphere and getting caught up in the game. Once he settled and realized what was at stake he took over for what Mason couldn’t do on offense.

He was straight ballin 2nd half into OT. If it wasn’t his outside shooting it was being a pest on defense and getting to the foul line. Huge Huge game for him, his best in a KU uniform if you discount the 1st half struggles.

  • Devonte was trying to guard Hield in the first half which might have affected his own game, maybe, but like @BeddieKU23 said, he just seemed way too amped up.

  • Selden and Graham both got exhausted and into foul trouble guarding Buddy. Mason told Coach at half time he would take him. Buddy already had 26 at the half. Mason in my opinion couldn’t have done any more than what he did to stop Buddy. Playing with Four Fouls throughout the OT’s, Buddy still made shots with Mason right in his face and grill. Buddy said himself that he was trying to get Frank to get his fifth foul because he was tired of having him in his face. Then Self said, “If Frank had not played like he did, Buddy would have scored 60.” The steal on the out of bounds and Frank’s ability to dribble to freedom before the foul was breath taking. Of all of these players, Frank was the one left with fuel in the gas tank. Everyone who played did great. Great to see Diallo in the game early and finally passing out of a double team. He will be playing more in conference. Svi’s three was beautiful and Jamari was spectacular. I was glad that Self also put him in on defense for the last play. It really is tough to sleep with an 11:30 p.m. adrenaline rush.

  • Frank didn’t have his best night, but sure showed some cojones when it counted. Love his post game quotes…

“I could play two more overtimes right now,” Mason (15 points, 5-20 shooting) said with a smile.

    and

Of the crucial steal on the out of bounds play, Mason said: “Right before the play started the ref told me not to get close to the line. I took a step closer and went all out to deny. I got a deflection and got the steal.

He was well past the 3 feet separation line he should have given Heild, but oh well, he sure got hosed on that clean steal he had earlier too.

  • I give the MVP to Frank.

No… this was not one of his best offensive nights.

I know this sounds nuts… but he did CONTAIN Buddy. What did Buddy end up with… 48 points?

He contained Buddy just enough down the stretch where Buddy couldn’t take control of the game. That was the risk as the game came down to the wire.

So essentially… Buddy’s big game meant diddly. They leave Lawrence with a “L”… just as if Buddy left with only 3 points on 1-27 from the field. None of that matters… they left with a “L.”

Frank did a great job of ball denial, and when Buddy had the ball, Frank was in his grill. He played it just right. And that second half foul they called on Frank for d’ing him up perfect was atrocious. The refs totally sucked in this game. When was the last time I said that… I don’t say it unless it is so horrible they impacted the game in a big way.

  • The big thing with OU’s offense is FLOW.

Even if Buddy scores from trey, that doesn’t necessarily mean their offense is in a flow. Frank did a great job on the perimeter disrupting Buddy enough to make him earn his points and also prevent OU (as a team) from flowing their offense (in chunks of the second half).

In the first half, as it came down to the end, OU went on a 9-0 run in 1 minute. That is the explosive capability of OU. That was OU in a real flow. If they can get about 5 continuous minutes of offensive flow, they will run up a 20-point shift in the score… putting most games out of reach. We have that capability, too… maybe just not quite to the level of OU.

OU had the right plan and was sitting right to leave AFH with a “W.” Frank on the perimeter, Jamari in the paint (and open court), and sometimes Devonte on the steal… These guys disrupted OU’s flow enough to stop them from blowing us out.

  • I had a friend who played against Earl “The Pearl” Monroe in college. He said, “I held him to 29 points - in the second half.”

  • @drgnslayr Exactly - that is the key when playing Oklahoma. Even though they still had a good game, the disruption kept it from being much worse.

  • @RockChalkinTexas I saw one from Mario little too. Brothers!

  • I’m having a hard time focusing on work today. Let’s do a Caption Contest for this one. Look at Wayne Simien in the background yelling (behind Fred).

That call was BS and you must be FNG blind as a bat. 39.jpg

  • @RockChalkinTexas

Possibilites for what self is saying:

“Do I need a breath mint!?”

    “Have you considered hair plugs!?”

    “LOUD NOISES” (quoting Brick Tamland)

  • @RockkChalkk I bet self eats onions before the game!! That ref is scary looking! He needs hair advice from Higgins!

Definitely agree. Apologies for how I put it because I didn’t make it clear how I felt (I was too amped form the game and definitely intoxicated on adult beverage). I felt like if KU has first half Graham, it’s going to be tough for them to win games against legit opponents. When second half Graham showed up, KU was able to erase a lead against a legit opponent. It was a pretty good example of how important he is to the teams aspirations.

You could use any line Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket used for Bill Self. J Howard looks like he shouldn’t have trusted that fart.

Love to see the reaction from Cliff. I’m really bummed he never got a chance to have a legit year at Kansas.

  • @RockChalkinTexas I love this pic!

  • @RockChalkinTexas Three blind mice! See how they run! Three blind mice I said!!!"

  • @RockChalkinTexas is that b morningstars head 'bout to get slapped by ref? Is he making pizzas?

  • @RockChalkinTexas Whats that random hand in the picture thats about to get a handful of Self’s butt cheek? Haha.

  • @RockkChalkk going to guess coach Roberts.

  • @Jyhwk_InTigrtwn

LOL. Full quote is even more priceless.

“Right before the play started, the ref told me to, like, not get close to the line. But, after he handed the ball in, there’s nothing he can do, so, you know, I took a step closer, and I just went all out on the deny and got the deflection and the steal.”

    audio

  • @DanR I love that!

  • @RockChalkinTexas Except knowing about Wayne what I’ve read about him is he wouldn’t cuss at all due to his devout religious beliefs, but he may have thought it. ")

  • @Mikey-P Perry impressed the hell out of me. I mean, Ive said earlier this season that I wanted him to step it up. Quit being soft and Make an impact. Show some emotion for crying out loud!

Well, you know what? He ripped the dammed knob off!!

  • @RockChalkinTexas

Coach Self: You are way over your head and I’m getting the finger?

Referee: I know, I know, I know…my mistake was this big but your are getting the finger anyway…just because I can… 😃

  • @wissoxfan83 Maybe you misunderstood - I wasn’t implying that Wayne was saying that to the ref. I was saying what HCBS was saying to the ref.

All I did was point out that Wayne was yelling and showing emotion because he rarely ever does. And you are right about him being a pastor/chaplain? and most likely would never utter such things.
