MONTANA GRIZZLIES - SATURDAY 1 P.M. (SORRY, TIME WARNER CABLE)

  • What an incredibly beautiful state. I hope they take solace in all that natural wonder after getting the crap stomped out of them this Saturday…

  • They have two 6’-8" players that play regularly and one 6’-10" that does not play much. KU should have a big advantage inside andit could be a good game for Diallo to get extended minutes.

  • @JayHawkFanToo he sure needs them!

  • @Crimsonorblue22

    Yeap…and only 3 games left before conference…

  • The geographer teacher in me needs to point out the pic of the mountains with the lake in the foreground is up north in the Canadian Rockies!

Count me as one who has often wished to be born and raised in Montana. Spent a fabulous week in the Yellowstone area this summer, actually staying in Montana. Hated to leave.

Speaking of grizzlies I’m sure the grizzly my sons encountered on a trail was scarier than the basketball team coming to AFH!

  • People who would have loved to have seen Montana. Sam Neill.jpg

  • @HighEliteMajor

    HOWLING!

  • @nuleafjhawk

    Double Howling!

  • University of Montana has SEVEN guys on their roster from Montana.

Montana Populations Density: 7 persons/square mile

KU has FOUR guys on its roster from Kansas.

Kansas Population Density: 32.9 persons/square mile

Wow, Montana is generating nearly twice the roster players with a quarter of the population density!!!

It may be tougher to find a person in Montana, but if you do find one, he’s probably a lot more likely to ball at a D1 level.

    🙂

  • @wissoxfan83 So that water is across the Northern Montana line. One of my favorite films was “A River Runs Through It.” My father said the greatest fly fishing in his life was in Montana. “legends of the Fall” was another Montana movie. Both of them featured Brad Pitt.

  • @wrwlumpy

Montana is amazingly beautiful and that week of summer is fabulous. 🙂

  • I tried to find out who the gentleman is that owns almost 2 % of the land in the US that lives in Montana. It is not an easy state to live in during the winter with all of the Big Sky isolation, but it is beautiful where the National Parks are, very brown elsewhere and very overwhelming to drive across it.

  • @wrwlumpy

    Experience the change Montana brings.

  • @wrwlumpy It’s called Moraine Lake, and it’s in Banff NP.

@jaybate-1.0 We lucked out and were there for the week of summer last summer.

    @wrwlumpy

Thank you for taking time to give us Jayhawks fans not only a look at the team they are playing but all the extras too. I rather enjoy it.

  • @wrwlumpy thx Lump!

  • Wow, seeing the pix of Missoula, MT reminded me of college days, when I had just started going out with a girl from Missoula, who was at my college (in KS) on a bball+vball scholarship (5’9" redhead). Unfortunately, she felt forced to quit school to go back for a family intervention for her brother, who had gotten into drugs, if I recall. They were a close-knit family. We wrote each other a couple of times, but that of course trailed off, partly because of my perfect Poindexter sideline. (What game I had those days…not!) She stayed in MT & became a dental assistant, I think. She jokingly told me to look her up when I became “rich and famous”. I’m still trying on that…

  • @JayHawkFanToo

They have one of the top bigs in the country. Would be the perfect game for Diallo and Bragg to get experience guarding top big men. They will see plenty of them in Big 12 play and in March.

    @benshawks08

I was surprised they kept it close as well but Gonzaga isn’t the same juggernaut they have been in the past. Washington crushed them by 30 after that close defeat. I don’t see how they keep it within 30, they don’t score a lot, they don’t shoot the 3 well, nobody on the roster is a big threat from 3. Its a one man band…

  • @jaybate-1.0 You beat me to it. I was going to say 1 month,…I like your line better.

  • @HighEliteMajor Excellent!

  • @benshawks08 I’m going to guess Hunter starts, but Diallo gets significant minutes. Probably his turn to come off the bench first…but geez Bragg deserves mins. too…that’s why HCBS gets the big bucks.

  • @jaybate-1.0 In light of the upcoming weekend…Howling, me also.

  • @BeddieKU23

Is that Breunig, the German guy? He is good…but would you really call a 6’8" big? Little Big maybe?

Gonzaga with Sabonis, Karnowsli and Wiltjer and Vanderbilt with all the trees up front were supposed top have the best front lines but KU had not much problem against Vanderbilt and it looks like thee injury to Karnowski at Gonzaga has hurt them a lot, and of course Kornet being out for several weeks will hurt Vanderbilt.

  • We should be able to handle Breunig. He’s sort of like a mid major Perry Ellis. He handles the ball well and generally can dominate that level of competition, but he should not overwhelm us.

This is a game where we should be able to get out to a lead early and get minutes for guys that have been struggling to see action, particularly a guy like Legerald Vick. I would like to see him get 12-15 minutes of run in this one to see how far along he is for playing at the D1 level.

    @jaybate-1.0

I would anticipate that for most Montanaians, playing at Montana is the best they can do for D1. They aren’t being recruited to places like KU and the other elites, so they probably tend to land at Montana and other schools in the area. KU recruits nationally, so they won’t necessarily land many Kansans.

Wichita State has five Kansans on their roster - Baker, Frankamp, Wessel, Zach Bush, and Brett Barney.

K-State has six Kansans on their roster - Mason Schoen, Zach Winter, Pierson McAtee, Dean Wade, Brian Roehleder and Austin Burke.

KU has only 4 Kansans, and three are walk-ons - Ellis, Manning, Self and Clay Young.

The competition for a spot on the KU roster is much stiffer than a spot at Montana, or WSU or KSU. You’re competing with players from literally the entire world for every single roster spot. At Montana, you’re competing for spots only with other guys from around that area. Yes, Montana may grab a few players from outside the area, but their recruiting budget just won’t allow them to recruit the entire country (or world) for talent.

  • @justanotherfan

They have 1 German and 2 Australian players…

  • @JayHawkFanToo

Yes, and he started his career at Washington but transferred after a season I believe. He will at least test our post players.

  • Saw a bit of their last game vs. Washington on local TV. The young Huskies team doesn’t play much defense but didn’t have a problem beating the Griz.

Thanks for the photos…Glacier National Park is one of my favorite vacation spots. Also the first time I ever saw a bear in the wild. Last time I was there I hiked a trail across the border into Canada’s Waterton Provincial Park. (This was just before 9/11, so I don’t know if that trail is still open.) Even for non-hkers, the drive on Going-To-The-Sun Road is spectacular.

A lot of the glaciers there are melting, though…gotta get back soon.

  • @justanotherfan

You were perhaps taking my playfulness more seriously than intended, but you are nonetheless likely correct, though @JayHawkFanToo raises an interesting insight also.

Regardless lets collect some grizzly claws and beat Montana!!!

  • Montana was in my top 5 states to look for work when I retired from the AF. That is until I met a lady from Nawlins a year before I retired. After I retired we tried Calif, Kansas and South Carolina before ending up down here in her home in da bayou’s of Louisiana. Once you taste the NW US, including Alaska, the rest of the country is like ground beef.

  • @wrwlumpy Thanks again for the photos…brings back lots of memories.

When you take the Amtrak train Empire Builder west from Chicago during the summer, it goes through the park right around sunset.

  • @nwhawkfan

That is the one train ride I have been hoping to take…if I ever get enough free time…

  • @ralster

She jokingly told me to look her up when I became “rich and famous”. I’m still trying on that…

Becoming rich and famous or looking her up? 🙂

  • Awesome pictures!

    OOH LA LA!

  • @wrwlumpy - I was going to post some scenic photos of the State of KANSAS, but since the photo’s are kind of your thing, would you oblige us? And some famous Kansas alum?

  • That scenery near Missoula is absolutely fantastic. Returning from spectating the US Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, 1976, I observed and spoke with dozens of bicyclists who were peddling the Bike America Trail from West Coast, many of them heading to Canada for the summer Olympics. I exchanged my daily running shoes for a 12 speed bike, did lots of research, then headed westward again the next summer for a 2400 mile bike ride, Winchester Bay, Oregon, to KC. Spectacular scenic memories, even tho I did not tote a camera. Lumpy’s photos stir recall. If I were possessed of the chance to rewrite my years, I would probably opt for graduate work somewhere out west, most probably U. of Montana. (As a side note, a famous American who at one time was known as Bruce Jenner won the decathlon in those Olympic Trials.)

  • @wrwlumpy

    Great job!

Hard to compete with those awesome nature shots you posted.

But when I think of Montana, the first thing popping into my head is Butte-born, Robert Craig Knievel. The infamous “Evel Knievel.”

I have several scars because of Evel… his influence was big on dumb, young guys like myself, flying high off of ramps and hills on my first dirt bike.

  • @drgnslayr a lot of pics of dumb!😳

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Testosterone RULES!

  • @JayHawkFanToo Well, I wasn’t exactly sure how to process that at the time. It was the only time we got to talk on the phone. I knew it would be years before the “rich and famous” could even be possible, and being young and 21 and single…I realized I was the initiator more than she was, so I gave a period to allow her to initiate, she didn’t. I moved on. I think I called a year later, but only got her friend, left a msg. Never got a call back. But then, we were really just friends getting to know each other, certainly not a longtime couple. Wondered about it for quite a while.

Met my wife about 8yrs later, and that was 20yrs ago…

I think it is only natural, though to wonder what happened to somebody. And maybe to think of her when I see “Montana”, as she is the only person I’ve known from Montana.

  • Well, its 12:48, I’m at work in way western KS, and this game is BLACKED OUT “in my area” on ESPN3. Would have been nice to watch it live. I dvr’d it back home near Wichita on Cox22, so I’ll watch the game T-u-e-s-d-a-y…(sigh…money talks to Sheahon Zenger, and its not my level of $, clearly. Oh, I can spin it on Zenger’s behalf, and say it is about proving to another conference that KU’s TV market share has been taken to a wider mkt beyond KS, and maybe he is generating the TV sets to do it? I have no idea really. Just mad that I cannot see the game. In Kansas.)

Part of the reason, I hate to admit, that I do not take calls from KU telemarketers, despite being alumni. And a former WmsFund member. Not interested in tickets, as I can sit halfcourt, low rows anytime with Stubhub tickets, if I want better than the TV experience.

On the other hand, I cannot gripe too much, as living near Wichita, I do get every game televised, since I have cox cable, who carries the TimeWarner stuff. I know other KU folks may not get all the games if they have dish. The big-mkt TV bias has really come HOME to roost, eh?

  • @ralster

Yes, indeed. I know several people that after decades met their younger days sweethearts and had good endings. I recently got a call from my HS girlfriend who found me though LinkedIn. She has been living in Italy and France for the last 30 years and wants me to come visit her in France…I am still pondering about this…

  • @JayHawkFanToo Wow! I’m curious what you may decide to do…and how it goes. Obviously there could be variables affecting such decisions…

    RCJH

  • @JayHawkFanToo Go, G0, G0. !

  • @wrwlumpy I vote go too! Life’s short. I’m assuming there are no spouses involved.
