We should be concerned about Cal Baptist. If this game is close early the crowd will have no issues rallying behind a team that plays 90 minutes away.
Baptist has the 50th ranked defense and they have size to throw at us down low.
They also have the 5th leading scorer in the country.
They play slow, 264th in tempo
This doesn’t look like an easy game especially for our team that has played so inconsistent the last month. They also will wait all day to play and nerves will be tested. Buckle in folks as round 1 is absolutely no cinch. I’d like to think we will rise to the occasion but there are no sure things with this group
-
Some positives in the matchup- they don’t shoot a lot of 3’s (321st).
Some other concerning matchup things- they are really at rebounding, offensive rebounding and forcing non-steal turnovers.
They hold opponents to under 30% from 3.The offense will have to show up for once

Road game in game one
Last night, the CBS sports guys couldn't hold back their discontent about the injustice of 7-seed Miami having to play a 'road' game against 10-seed Missouri in St Louis.
One person pointed out that the committee's 'principles' of protection against disadvantaged locations only apply to the top 4 seeds.
Did anyone mention 4-seed KU being shipped to San Diego to play Cal Baptist of Riverside? No. Not a peep.
It's 100 miles from Cal Baptist to San Diego State where the games are played. 1 hour 30 min drive.
University of Missouri is 130 miles from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, MO. 2 hour drive.
Way to go, committee.
Way to wear the ACC & SEC blinders, CBS crew.
..
Guess we'll see if we can win a road game. Maybe that was the point.

@DanR Agreed, outside of Tech who we can't play, St. Johns is the 5 seed I would want to play the most. Duke is probably the 3rd #1 seed with the injuries they have so can't complain about pulling them. Uconn is the weakest 2 seed and while Michigan St. is a good 3 seed, KU can only play one of those two.
-
Just fyi, Duke was the #1 overall seed. Arizona was 2, Michigan 3 and Florida 4. Houston (who faces Florida) was the #1 2-seed, etc., etc.
If you follow that, it assures that the top #1 has the most favorable matchup with the weakest #4 (that's KU) and it suggests that the top 5-seed is St. Johns.
They typically do that kind of serpentine kind of seeding until it conflicts with one of their "principles", which they take great care to follow (ahem.)

(So, you're saying there's a chance...)
Nate Silver's model gives Cal Baptist a higher chance of beating us than of us winning the East regional.
Also gives St Johns (5 seed) a higher chance of winning the East than Mich State (3 seed) or us (4 seed).
-
Hope DP lets it fly man. #1 draft pick. Just unload the clip. Fuck everyone else, if you defer they're probably gonna brick anyways
-
The goal was to try to develop chemistry between DP and the rest of the group during the regular season. Mission failed. Maybe our best chance is for DP to take over and let it fly. On the other hand, we played better without him. Maybe benching him is our best chance. Either way, I don't think this team is it. They looked like they might be special for a while in February, but then they let the wheels come off.

@rcjhdraft Your train of thought pretty much aligns with the podcast of ( we could be wrong ) . They saying stand back and turn Darryn loose- - let it fly, if he shoots 25-30 times so be it
I was looking at team stats comparisons from ESPN- -rbg avg --scoring-- assists --to's fga - - ft avg etc , etc-- pretty much a wash . Looks like St Johns runs like a eight man rotation- -pretty balanced.
Even the kid playing the least in this eight man averages around twenty one minutes a g ame. -size wise these teams pretty much the same , Zuby turns the ball over the most but leads in scoring , rebounding , and even good on assists- they average like 81 points a game -- we average right at 76, neither team turns it over much - --they turn it over right at 10 1/2 a game- -were right at 11. ---we shoot the ball right at 45.3 % they are at 45.5 --like I said pretty much a wash
-
I'll be a lot more eager to pontificate about the KU vs St Johns game when both teams get through the first round.

Mizzou is a power 5 school that has an arena 2½ times the size of Cal Baptist's and has enthusiastic support across the region (as irrational as that may be). Cal Baptist is in their 8th yr of Div 1, and this is their 1st NCAA tourney. I think your worry about the horrors facing KU going to SD, to face this nationally-never-before-been-heard-of-team, may be a bit overblown.
On the other hand, it is quite sobering to note that Cal Baptist has been to as many Final Fours as Mizfuck U has. So maybe the equivalence is closer than I thought.
