Lets Dance - Arkansas vs KU
-
Well crud. I don’t think I can watch another game this year.
-
I’m a little bit different, I guess. I will watch a LOT of the Tournament now. Usually (well, in the good ol days) I’d be so dejected when we lost that I was just done. Now I’m relieved and looking forward to watching real basketball.
-
This. We spent an inordinate amount of time handwringing about total dysfunction. Its a relief to have closure.
-
It is his Achilles. His family was w/him in the locker room. Don’t know the full severity of it.

Yea, looked like it.
The way he reacted and went straight to the locker room. Terrible.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 thats awful. We would have won that game with KJ. Sucks to go out like that. Hope KU takes care of him.
-
Small consolation is the dirty slavers are about lose as well to Drake.
-
@approxinfinity agree, the lead and the ball.
-
I think AJ can be successful next year. Not sure about here. I dont get the feeling he wants to be here.
-
I hope AJ comes back and Self can get the best out of him though, if that relationship isnt fractured.

AJ wouldn’t have chosen KU on his own. He was pushed here by family because KU made the biggest offer.

Drake 75 Slavers 65 final

KJ-- - -I don’t give a rats ass what anyone else whether it’s here with this room , or in the phog ----- -or ANYWHERE , yes you was limited on the offensive end I get that-- -but there is or was NO ONE & I mean NO ONE that gave the effort you did every time you stepped on the floor, you played with so much heart and grit- - to bad others on the team didn’t have the heart you had. You was on the floor a lot for loose balls- - defending-- just really trying to do your best when we had others that played half ass for over the three quarters of the year.
I will never question your heart and guts and love for this team.-- So KJ from me and possibly only me- - doesn’t matter as far as I’m concerned I have no doubt you always gave it your all- -doing work , dirty work theta others on this team had no desire to do.-- So KJ I say to you - -THANK YOU BUDDY greatly appreciated for your hustle , work , and effort doing what you could do and always giving it 100 %- - I’m glad you was a Jay Hawk.
My prayers-- my wishes for you to have a speedy healthy recovery Bud- – - just remember buddy once a Jay Hawk - - ALWAYS A JAY HAWK- - your family, always have been-- always will be- — Thank you again Buddy- -best of luck ----Rock Chalk

I considered buying tickets to boo them in Wichita but they have 3 Kansas kids on their roster a couple weeks really missed on.
-
@SlimShaddy54 anyone that doesn’t feel terrible for the way it ended for KJ should have their ass whipped especially the ones calling themselves KU fans. KJ gave this place his whole heart and I’d don’t think anyone logical would disagree. I sure as hell wish he was out there at the end. Just as much as I wished he developed into a great player. I’ll miss his dunks and fist pumping. I place a lot of the blame on Self for the position he put him in. That’s a Mitch Lightfoot fan favorite if he was put in the position to succeed at this place. As much as I like guys like him and Juando as people and hope they succeed in lifee, they should’ve never been starters getting primo minutes at Kansas. They aint starting at most power schools right now.
-
The biggest issue I have right now- Tang is 3-3 vs Bill Self and has more NCAAs tournament than Self since he got to Manhattan. Of all the streaks this team destroyed, that is the most unacceptable stat in Kansas basketball history.
-
Travelled all afternoon. Got here to mom and dads and just finished watching. Disappointing finish, LOL.
Factors,
Injury to KJ seems to be when the meltdown doomed our season. Forget the exact game situation but had the ball up three I think. Then started back with the inexplicable turnovers. Those hurt us all game. Really frustrating to see so many experienced guys make such boneheaded plays.
I always complain about refs and when it says Ark 3 with about 3 minutes left I’m pretty pissed because that was a physical game. Haven’t read the chat above so I don’t know if anyone had the same thoughts about refs. I really can’t think of a specific except Zeke getting bumped out of bounds once late it looked like. Not sure refs were a huge factor as much as the ugly turnovers.
Arkansas was very beatable today so it’s a bit frustrating but I’ll get over this one pretty fast since the real regret about this season has been building since we got blitzed by Creighton in mid December and it was just a sign of things to come.
I’ve ‘won’ 3 nattys in my time as a KU fan. Really spoiled as a KU fan and it’s a whole lot better than what most D1 fans go through with their teams. Most can only dream of FFs. So trying to keep a proper perspective on all of this.
I know people have a difference of opinion about this but as much as people will blame Harris and KJ and Dickinson for this disaster of a season I blame the dudes Bill Self recruited to play here that left and would still be here if they appreciated what it means to put on a KU uniform. Grady and Furphy and the St. Johns Dude and the TCU dude and others i don’t really care to even look up their names could’ve been part of a core that might’ve been cutting down the nets this season. I hope Furphy had fun sitting on the bench again tonight in Indy getting zero minutes while on the other side was Jalen Wilson who probably told him you could’ve been playing tonight in the NCAA tournament you greedy fool. I guess Grady’s hurt, whatever, he could’ve been THE MAN this year making 7 figures as a college guy. Whatever. Have fun in the national Boring association. The transfers I understand a bit at least. NYC has some appeal for whoever is at st johns. But TCU? Really? Leave KU for stinking lousy TCU? Why?
All of these guys are the real guys to blame for leaving our cupboard half full this season. The recruiting restrictions hurt too of course. 3 lackluster season finishes in a row have got me even thinking do we need a change? Maybe Self is doing some soul searching and will follow the still viable successful coaches like Jay Wright into retirement. IDK. Not used to this year after year feeling.
-
I’ll list the obviously desperate acts Bill Self miraculously resorted to tonight (finally – and they worked):
– Zone defense. Stupid effer could have done this much earlier in the season to help us out a bit???
– Playing AJ more minutes.
Both worked very well tonight.
Why did he decide to succumb tonight? He has had many chances all year to alter his approach.
-
And Fun With the Box Score!!
Actually, not much stood out to me tonight. Lots of similar stats.
The biggest thing was turnovers: KU 16 – Arkansas 10
One small thing also stood out: AJ Storr got 28 minutes, and produced.
-
@wissox Zuby and Udeh left because they were recruited over with more money thrown at Dickinson. That is related to coaches not assessing appropriately the ceiling that the players have and going after fool’s gold (Dickinson) when you had 2 bigs that would most likely be playing for KU if not for the portal and NIL. The only question is whether Zuby would develop into the player he currently is if he stayed at KU.
-
@patoh3 You might be right. I still can’t fathom leaving KU.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk that’s the saddest part we really won every stat category besides turnovers. The only other thing that stands out to me is Juan 4-11 from the floor and Hunt 4-13. Most of those shots they took were good looks too. Think Hunt had a few bad 3s other than that both guys had shots you have to make in March. Juan had a couple drives that he avoided contact for a circus shot when he likely gets free throws. The only other question to me is why Zeke didn’t get more looks, been begging for an elevator screen type play for him all season 4/5 from distance, the other guys failed getting him the rock. Anyone have the plus/minus for this one?
-
Hate KJ got hurt.
We aren’t talented enough and that’s on the staff. The old Self would’ve recruited over a few of these guys. The new Self just tells us how much they’re winners while we get our tails kicked by any team with some decent talent.
-
I gotta say I’m shocked @kuballin10 isn’t here blowing his cork. Prob too busy helicoptering himself
-
@kjayhawks Coit +6, KJ +3, Shak +1, Storr -1, Bidunga -4, Dickinson -8, Rylan -9, Mayo -10, and Juan -13.

Being real with whom we had this season it’s very true. I’m gonna give self some credit here because idk if a lot coaches get this group to the tournament tho I disagree with a lot of his coaching this season.
Juan- doesn’t start at any other school in the B12
Zeke- a top 10 3 point shooting season in ku history but lacks defense and creating his owe shot.
Rylen- spot up shooter that was too scared to shoot, basically Timberlake 2.0. Wasn’t good without NBA caliber teammates.
KJ- heart breaks he got hurt but he isn’t starting at the 4 at any B12 school.
Hunt- has cement shoes, couldn’t guard a soul and was just too inconsistent. Half of his missed layups are dunks for centers with athletic ability.
Diggy- not a D1 player IMO but at least plays hard.
Flory- just needs strength and experience
AJ- seems to not give a rats ass about anything. Could’ve played his way into a draft pick with his size and athleticism. Same guy that was on/off at Wisconsin and St John. What could have been if Bill didn’t ride Rylan’s coat tails the last 2 months.
Shak-couldn’t stay healthy tho I thought when he as healthy, it was as good or better than Juan

I genuinely mean this with all due respect but with the resources Coach has at his disposal in regards to NIL and adidas…
How is this an acceptable roster? We might have one fringe NBA player in Flory and he’s like two years away at best.
-
Well crap, that was a sad ending to a sad season. Not too surprising, but I had such high expectations going into this season. Damn preseason #1 jinx. I mean usually players get better with more experience. But I think we can now definitively say - not always.
The one thing that made it a bit easier for me was that it was pretty obvious this team wasn’t going anywhere towards the latter half of the season, so I wasn’t really too upset when we lost for a change - my dog was much happier that I wasn’t yelling at the tv every game!
Well we will have a bit more of a clean slate to work with next year, hopefully BS learned some things and makes some adjustments.
So for now, Rock chalk fellow board rats, thanks for all the interesting insights, and stay well.

Smart to no give the opponents tape. Bill breaks out the zone most years in the tournament only. It messes up the other team bad - look how poorly prepared Cal was for it even though Bill has done it to him in the tournament before!
-
@dylans I liked switching in the zone and agree you should always have something in your back pocket that teams don’t have a lot of film on in the tournament.

That’s a sign of the time. Before a starter would not have just tucked his tail between his legs and run off because a new player came in. That happened every offseason in college and the pros. Grow up or slink away into the void.
Zuby would have played for KU, he was a starter! He chose a path that would challenge him less. Maybe he’s overcome his pussifiacion, but I bet when push comes to shove he buckles on the court and in real life. Character matters.
-
@dylans I dont know man. Hard to argue that Zuby made the wrong choice right now.

Zuby may win a national championship, hard to argue with him leaving at this point.
-
I’m struggling this morning friends, 3 teams in NCAA basketball since the Ap poll released have been preseason number one and not won a tournament game. Kansas 05, UNC and us this season.
-
@approxinfinity Is it better to be a star for St John’s or KU? Asking for a friend.
-

Unfortunately right now it maybe St. John’s, they have better coaching and are playing in the big city
-
@kjayhawks Kansas last season is one bad foul call away from being on that list.
-
@Jhawk69 a 100% correct sir. Just sitting thinking of bad we were this past season in football and basketball in the final few minutes of a half. It’s astonishingly bad and crazy at the same time. If either team finish games we would have been much more successful.
-
So at this point I have to ask is Cal a better coach than Bill? Just beat us with a 13 loss team while not having one of their best players.
-
@kjayhawks No he isnt. Self is still a great coach, he just struggled with roster construction the last couple of years. Hunter was an awful add if you are going to start KJ and Dejuan. You had to surround KJ/DeJuan or Hunter with shooters. Instead he played all 3 and added Storr who is a slasher and needs space and is a streaky shooter at best. Griffin to me is the red flag. He is a player that Bill Self would NEVER recruit. I’m still shocked he was on the team.
-
@BigBad the more I think about it, the more I think the game has passed Bill by. We all knew this wouldn’t work and as you said no shooters and it was obvious. Why couldn’t he see it?
-
It’s just like I posted above, the last two years I’ve been screaming we can’t win playing KJ and Juan 30 minutes a game. It’s a pretty obvious assessment for anyone that knows anything about basketball. The logical conclusion is Bill felt sorry for them because of their personal struggles and rode with them anyways.
-
I just think Bill had a massive soft spot for KJ and DeJuan and didn’t recruit over them. I kind of give the guy a pass. KJ lost his mom to cancer while at Kansas and DeJuan had a rough childhood. The roster is now a complete redo. Bill has a chance to right the ship quickly with Peterson, Flory, and some transfers. If he cant compete next year it may be time.
-
@BigBad I hope he actually embraces the portal and uses it to fill needs instead of trying to build around players that shouldn’t be starting at Kansas. I’ve been told by several inside sources Bill is retiring for sure within the next two seasons. I hate to fire a legend but you can only live off of yesterday’s success so long. At this point he is running this program into the earth at a rapid pace.
-
I disagree. We need to find the right kids out of high school, keep them around, and use the portal to fill gaps. Or use the portal to snag guys who will be here 2-3 years and not one year rentals.
-
@Jhawk69 in a perfect world you have a little both but yes we need some HS kids they will stay and develop. I’m Hoping Flory and Passmore are two of those guys. At least for a few years, flory maybe in the nba next summer
-
Bill Self #2 all time BIG 12 coaches win percentage, Roy is First. BIG ten. With at least 100 games in the league coached Bill Self is #1 all time. Don’t give me any of this crap about Bill Self. The man literally is first or second on the all time lists of two of the best leagues in the NCAA all time. I fully trust he’ll get this ship righted soon.
-
Well there is Always what 64 ? losers at the end of the year- - just so happens we are one of those losers.- -Only ONE trophy , not 64.- -Bet there are a lot of Pissed off losers today across the Nation
Some probably standing on the edge of a cliff ready to jump- - some wanting to fire the Coach- - Some wanting whole ne rosters- - some just saying I QUIT I’m done watching Basketball, BUT YET the Sum still came up this Morning and guess what - -were still Alive and breathing- - -YES GOD is Great
-
@wissox i started a new thread to try to break down what previous Bill successes might look like if he were to repeat them now
-
KU should have 6-8 players on the roster next season that have never been apart of another college program depending on eligibility and if they stay.
Elmarko, McDowell, Flory, Passmore, Peterson, Tiller and possibly Calderon if he makes it and Clemence if he stays.
Coit and Shelby are also good locker room guys even if they aren’t originally Jayhawks. Coit is a natural leader and should be the person running things in the summer when coaches can’t be involved and Shelby is a high IQ practice player so really KU already has at least 8 and possibly 10 players for next season that should be able to hold newcomers accountable and up to KU standards.
I think a nucleus of Jackson, Peterson, Flory, with Diggy and Passmore rotation level back ups is a good starting point for next season.
I do think a lot of people are sleeping on what Elmarko will bring to the table next season. Every scouting report on him praised his leadership which now that he should be running the show, will come through.
I’m not saying Elmarko leads the team in scoring next season, but I could easily see him as the second leading scorer behind Peterson.
