KU vs. The Indiana Hoosiers Saturday 11AM This is a BIG GAME!!!
-
Indiana (my home state now) has been fairly consistent. They have played an easy, then tough schedule, and have showed some cracks. Their best win? Nothing stands out. They beat UNC in Bloomington after that once proud program had been exposed. They’ve twice lost by double digits once to ranked Arizona last Saturday in a neutral court game and once on the road at Piscataway NJ to Rutgers, aka the state university of New Jersey.
They feature an All-American candidate in Trayce Jackson Davis, another decent big in Race Thompson another in the long line of potential Gophers who left Minnesota. They have a decent guard who I also laugh every time he shoots. Kind of reminds me of DeJuans ugly shot, but quite a bit worse. I laughed with glee when he was called on to beat Wisconsin at the end of the game and shot uglyly again. Maybe he’ll humor us tomorrow by attempting some of his ugly shots.
Mike Woodson is still trying to win over Indiana fans. It’s a tough sell. They’re kind of look Nebraska football fans who think they’re still relevant nationally. Indiana had one of those get hot streaks in 2002 and played in the NC game, a game we would have played against them had we beat Maryland. Kelvin Sampson was the Hoosier coach. Kelvin was really the last decent coach they’ve had. Indiana fans are impatient as 2002 was the last final four or even Elite 8. Three sweet 16’s a decade ago were signs of hope but Tom Crean could never push them past that level.
The Assembly Hall is a sort of odd looking place. It’s kind of like a college football arena with almost zero end zone seats but sideline seats that rise up high into the Bloomington sky. Seeing pictures of it I’ve been amazed at how high up it rises and have wondered how well you can see from way up there. The back row of the lower deck, which is huge on both sides really looks far away.
This would be a nice win to get for us. Not a must win or anything, but a ranked win on the road is a test that I’m thinking we’ll deal them their third double digit loss.
A few pics lumpy style will follow as I can get to them.

It’s a home game, homie! Allen will be rockin

I’m hoping we show even more improvement than our last game in Columbia. I like having a week now to school our guys. Perhaps I’m dreaming… but I feel like this is a high basketball IQ team that learns at a rapid clip.
Indiana will definitely be a notch up in personnel over Mizzou. I wonder if they will try to go with their 6’10" Duncomb, who has been out for a while.
Had an interesting article on KUSports about our bench and how little we’ve used ours. I like how Self is playing this… develop a very capable starting 5 and get them playing in harmony and with speed THEN bring in bench to try to keep to that level.
Our biggest question mark is at the 5 on the bench. I’m starting to think KJ will be our starting 5 from here on out because we are developing offense with him in mind. His dominance against Mizzou was eye-opening and showed us what he can do against smaller bigs… especially with Self teaching the other 4 players how to feed him.
This Indiana game should be an entertaining game. We will be pushing tempo and it will probably come down to who can wrestle away more rebbies. I’m sure we can expect the typical rough play from a Big10 opponent. All our guys will need to step up on defense or this team will attack a weakness… even if it is just one weak defender.

Been watching YouTube highlights of the 1993 game, with Jacque Vaughn’s winning buzzer-beater in overtime. Lots of memories of that one.
I’d come back to KC for the holidays and drove to Lawrence for the game with my old KU girlfriend from the '70s, who was back in town from California. We were both looking for the Hawks to give Bobby Knight his comeuppance. Sans tickets and knowing that the game was a sellout, we hoped that the scalpers wouldn’t ask insane prices for tickets. (We were wrong.)
So we went to Plan B, and scrambled to find a bar that was showing the game on TV. Fortunately just before tipoff, we ducked into a place at 23rd & Iowa. (Coincidentally, it was called the California Bar & Grill, long since gone.) When Jacque hit the 3-pointer to win the game the place went ballistic. Not quite AFH, but the level of craziness was still there, if on a smaller scale. Hell of a reunion for the two of us. What a finish.
No matter how Saturday’s game ends up it can’t match the drama of that one. (By the way, she and I are still good friends…just sent her a Xmas card the other day.)

@nwhawkfan hmmmmm! A lot of finishes?

@Crimsonorblue22 Of course, Jacque is now coaching the Brooklyn Nets. By coincidence, my nephew used to be on their video crew at Barclays Center. While at KU he worked for Rock Chalk Video. A few years back he gave me a tour of their studios in the Fieldhouse. Quite a setup.

I don’t remember the game @nwhawkfan was referring to. Strange because I do recall a lot of nice moments in our history. But living in the ruralest of places in 1993 means we had very limited TV. I don’t even know how I kept up with the Jayhawks back then? I did somehow. Things have changed so much that i don’t miss a game unless i can’t watch live and don’t care to go back and watch us play Central Northern South Dakota state. I do recall being thankful they showed ranked teams scores on the news and since we were almost always ranked I’d see the scores.
-
So hyped for this game. Been up since 4am!

Students on break and Indiana fans travel well. I’m expecting them to have a decent amount of fans today. Also their 5-star guard Hood-Schifino will play today. Still, I expect us to win because I think our guards are better. KJ will have a tough match up with Trayce Jackson-Davis

Espn has a nice article about how todays slate of games feature 10 potential national champs facing off. They note the dynamic duo of Wilson Dick the top scoring pair in the country.
