Adams

  • I am interested to hear all of your thoughts on what you think of Adams?

  • Should be playing more

  • I am not a Coach doubter, you all know, but Adams needs to play some backup 5, 4 and even some spot post-up 3. He’ll have a great chance to start next year as a small 5 or at 4. I want him to play and stay in Lawrence.

I don’t see Adams starting next season. I’m guessing Wilson will be back which means he’ll likely be starting at the 4. Udeh or Clemence probably starts at the 5 next season. Zuby Ejiofor will also be in the mix at the 4 spot as well although I think he ends up in a similar role to Adams this season. And there’s also zero chance Adams ever plays a meaningful minute at the for KU. He lacks the ball handling and shooting ability to play the 3 under Self.

  • I guess what I’m saying is that I do not want Wilson to return. I’ll take a huge upside Adams over Wilson any day of the week.

  • I don’t know what upside Adams has until he is able to show he can shoot.

But his effort and athletic ability show he can do positive things now.

  • Adams should get more minutes in small lineups for KU. He is an athletic guy that can switch on the perimeter against other teams that play small. He’s a decent rebounder and he doesn’t need the ball on offense, which is good because he will be the sixth or seventh option in almost any lineup he’s in.

I don’t know what he could become. He could end up being Mario Little. He could end up being Jamari Traylor. He could end up being something more. He could also end up being Quintrell Thomas and succeeding elsewhere. Hard to tell right now with him getting so few opportunities.

  • More KJ! I’d love it if he was the first sub off the bench. He can guard just about every spot on the floor. When he’s had the opportunity to score, he has. I don’t care if he can shoot a jumper, not expecting that from him at all right now. Hustle, guard, rebound, fly through the air, make things happen with your athleticism. He’s an exciting player without being an offensive powerhouse at the moment. Just about every game he’s played he’s made something happen. I look for it every time he’s on the floor. More KJ!

  • Based on what we’ve seen of Adams in his limited minutes and the eye test he should be playing more then the last 2 minutes of a half. As others have said he can switch on defense, he hustles for loose balls, is an active rebounder, moves the ball extremely well within the offense. He isn’t forcing things and he’s doing what he can to help this team. Personally I think its worth giving him some extended minutes to see what that does.

  • @BeddieKU23 the way that Dave and Wilson are playing, what would it hurt right? From what I’ve seen, he brings a needed energy when he comes in. How many other teams out there would love to have an Adams in their lineup? I’d hate to see the guy transfer due to misplaced loyalties.

Just a thought; what we if he played the 4 instead of Jalen when we subbed? He does a lot of the same things. And Jalen can’t throw it in the ocean right now so we wouldn’t lose shooting.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

I can see that working as long as you have at least 3 scorers around him.

I think this would be interesting, Self will never do it with the way he talks about Jalen despite Jalen being terrible.

And that is a problem. Not only is he playing terrible, but he also doesn’t seem to be too popular with the rest of the team. He is a guy who after this season I will be glad to see go.

I would not only support playing KJ first off the bench at the 4, but maybe giving him a few minutes at the 5 too.

  • Here’s the thing. Jalen Wilson cannot possibly continue to shoot this badly. He is not this bad a shooter. He is 2-22 from three. I would have expected a 5-22 start, but 2-22 is worse than even the most down projections would have had. He will have some positive reversion to the mean soon. He’s not a great shooter (probably only low to mid 30s) but that still means a 10-20 stretch is probably coming soon.

The bigger issue is that he has not been active this season until recently. He is starting to rebound more in line with expectations (17 in the last two games). He just needs to play with some more energy. He is actually the guy that benefits most from a 5 out lineup because there isn’t a center in the country that wants to try and guard him 20 feet from the basket. If we spread the floor more, Jalen probably ticks up a bit. And even if he doesn’t, playing 5 out opens up driving lanes for Braun, Ochai, Martin, etc. Since that’s where the bulk of our offense is going to come from, opening up the lane helps. Plus, with Braun, Ochai and Martin all being decent rebounders as guards, KU can get by with smaller lineups if Wilson hits the glass, too.

Point being, yeah, I’d love to see Adams get more minutes, but I doubt that is going to happen, so we have to hope for the alternative - that Wilson gets going offensively, or at least starts pounding the glass like he is capable of to make up for the times when we don’t have a true 5 in the game.

  • @justanotherfan he shot what, two for six last night? Not good. But I’ll give him his due, he rebounded well. @Crimsonorblue22 said it elsewhere, that’s probably the reason that he’s playing.

  • @Marco

The best way out of a shooting slump is to not worry about shooting during games. Don’t hunt shots. Don’t worry about makes and misses. Pound the glass. Defend your tail off. Set solid screens. When you do that, weird things happen.

You get an easy putback. You get a steal and dunk. You hit an open three in transition. Seven quick points without even looking for your own offense. Suddenly that zero isn’t haunting you. You get another putback. Get a layup off a drive after a pump fake. Now you have 11 and you’re feeling good.

You start thinking shots are going to go in. Step back three. Baseline turnaround. Midrange jumper.

Sometimes you don’t find your offense. Sometimes it finds you.

  • @justanotherfan you are a basketball poet.
