The question is - - - - - - WHY? - - got enough QB’s competing now. - like 5 BEFORE this guy . - -we have our starter from last year , we have the 2 Freshmen QB’S coming in - - -we had another that was on the squad from last year - -why take ANOTHER transfer ?

Because he’s immediately eligible and last year had a better QB rating than any KU QB since Todd Reesing in 2008

Welll alrighty then, that’s different. Just looking at his stats just didn’t blow me away but knowing this sounds better - just seeing 14/5 was thinking ehhh. - You think with is you think it might make a difference with our to incoming FR ?lots of competition

Have you not seen KU’s QB play the past 11 years? Why would you not want as much competition as possible at a position KU’s gotten basically no production from in over a decade?

Man you’ve already gotten these two freshman written off a trashed based of previous KU QB production - - nice. - - you have no idea what kind of production you could get from these guys - -again nice. No way in hell can you assume that these guys can’t produce. just automatically assume - believe me I’ve been here for all of those 11 years your talking about plus many many more. Jalen Daniels is not as bad as some think. I don’t give a dma if you have no line protection NO ONE is going to do squat. Maybe we should put you back there see how you do wit h that line.
I will say this though seeing video of this kid - - he got wheels , kid can run which is good, he will need it , gets the ball out pretty quick at times /lazer - -but besides that your entitled to your opinion just like I am to mine , think if we added anymore at this point needed to be focused more on the O-Line & D-line that’s all.

I want them to compete. I think we need to RS two of the freshmen now that Bean is in the fold. Bean, Daniels/Hawley/Easters, Kendrick your top 3. RS the other two frosh. Bean is also a freak show of an athlete. Probably runs in the 4.4’s, which behind our line is probably necessary unfortunately.
He won’t be here for spring ball but there’s a real chance the system will be different in fall camp anyway

I don’t think @Texas-Hawk-10 is writing anyone off. Just saying having someone who has produced at the FBS level so we don’t have to rely on 3 true freshmen, which who knows what you’ll get, is good.

well guess but if a freshman beats him out - - he beats him out - I don’t care if it’s Fr , soph , what the hell over STILL saying Jalen is better too then what people are giving him - Hell what do you expect when you spend 3/4 of your time running for your life a getting body crunched 3/4 of your time can’t show squat when you have no time

KU needs as much help as possible at QB. Having as many options as possible at QB is not a bad thing.
We also don’t know the long term future of any of the QB’s on the roster now. Whenever KU hires their new coach, we don’t know who’s going to be a fit or not in a new system.
-
OK , I know in reality this sounds , & actually is probably crazy & also in reality not a chance in hell but mercy the more I hear from some talking and watching and listening to his interview - -I really like Emmit Jones. Ya I know he has no head Coaching experience , so I myself wonder why I wouldn’t mind giving the guy his shot. Some have said having him even for the year will cost us another year of recruiting - -please tell me that is ?
Jones has proven he really recruits & recruits well. - -He obviously would continue to do that. The way I look at giving hi his shot : His recruiting ability , Already has a very well established relationship with the players, you wouldn’t be disrupting the current roster , would be familer without players having to start all over yet AGAIN. - -Current staff in place wouldn’t have to find a bunch of new Coach’s - -AGAIN. Think he would be able to retain 90-95 % of the current roster , how many leaves when a new Coach is brought in - which just sits us back yet- - -AGAIN
Like I said in reality I understand , realize this is not going to happen and it won’t kill me if it doesn’t BUT the more I hear this guy speak , I can for sure understand why players back this guy , hell even some of the incoming class that hasn’t played a snap for this guy supports him - -would like to see him get his shot. - - At least don’t turn him lose for this coming year , let him run the team this year hell who knows might surprise us. - - I’m a big Leipold guy also but he has started his spring ball and very well could be hesistant about leaving right now. - -Anyways Jones wouldn’t be the worst choice at this present moment. just blowing hot air I know, just random thoughts

Weird, weird, weird. So, while KU football is starting spring practices and has its intrasquad game scheduled for May 1, our first opponent is playing conference games this spring. The Missouri Valley has its teams playing conference games right now. Our September 4 opponent, South Dakota has played 4 games starting February 27 and has several more to play. The good news is South Dakota is 1/4 with several games cancelled. I was looking at South Dakota football in hopes of seeing a vulnerable team for a possible W in 2021. But, SD is playing a freshman QB who will now have game experience when he plays KU on Sept 4. It just looks like SD will come to Lawrence better prepared to play than our poor team limping in with an interim head coach and many of our roster positions completely unsettled. Also, may we please fire the moron who keeps scheduling Coastal Carolina as a nonconference opponent. We need the nonconfernce schedule that KState used to build its program when Snyder started there.

The games FCS schools are playing now are the same games they would’ve been playing in the fall so there’s not really an experience advantage.
Scheduling games now is not the same as it was 30 years ago. Games are scheduled years in advanced and KU scheduled the Coastal series when Coastal was transitioning to FBS and wasn’t assumed to end up being a top Group of 5 program. There’s also now only 3 non conference games instead of the 4-5 nonconference games Big 8 teams played 30 years ago, and also unlike 30 years ago, P5 teams have to schedule at least one other P5 opponent in their schedules. Snyder and KSU didn’t have to worry about that stuff 30 years ago.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Yes, I can tell the the Big 12 wants teams to schedule more competitive games with nonconference opponents. KState was forced to upgrade its nonconference schedule with USC a few years ago. But, what’s wrong with getting out of previously scheduled games like CC and even Duke, then scheduling more competitve games for a rebuilding program? I think the entire Big 12 enjoys keeping Kansas as an easy win. KU likely plays more Big 12 teams’ homecoming games than any other team. How can we rebuild if KU is winless every year?

Straight cash, homie. Both to cancel existing games and pay someone else to come to Memorial.

KSU didn’t schedule USC until after Snyder had been there for over a decade and those games were scheduled before Pete Carroll turned USC into the dominant USC of the 2000’s that they were.
It’s not just the B12 forcing teams to schedule P5 nonconference games, every P5 has that mandate now. TV viewership is the driving force behind that mandate because 30 years ago, there was maybe 5 games on during a weekend. Even when those KSU/USC games happened 20 years ago, there were maybe 10-12 games on during a weekend.
As far as KU scheduling a mandatory P5 opponent, who do you want Kansas to schedule? Duke was 2-9 last year and are a traditional bottom feeder like Kansas so who would you rather see KU schedule? All these P5 match ups for KU are going to be home and home games. KU has series with Duke, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington State lined up for the next 8 years. Other than Missouri, those are traditional bottom feeders in their conference so I don’t know what else you think KU can do with their schedule.
KU does not have the money to cancel games just because a non P5 opponent unexpectedly becomes good plus it would be really bad PR for KU to back out of a game like that.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Unfortunately, money is always the driving factor. I was remembering Duke from a couple of years ago with their first round nfl QB. How does KU get this program turned around? It’s possible; Iowa State and Coastal Carolina have done it.

Well on the way. It’s as talented a roster as we’ve had in a decade. Hire Leipold once (presumably) Goff is on the job. Prosper.
-
@FarmerJayhawk How much of that talent that Jones played a large role in bringing to Lawrence stays if he’s let go after a new coach is brought in and presumably starts bringing in his own coaches who don’t have a relationship with the current players?
Bringing in a new coach after spring practice is not a smart decision to me because either the new head coach won’t have a say in who’s on his staff or he brings in his own staff making spring practice a complete waste and losing a bunch of players and recruits that haven’t arrived yet.

ya we got the pieces in spots for sure & gettin more. Defensive secondary is getting there you can see it grow right before your eyes - - still young but in ways that’s a good thing. These 4 year guys , all high school talent going to be salty by their Jr year for sure, Pretty good receiver group going to be pretty heated competition 6’3 - -6’4 guys guys with some speed in that group , guys that can go get the ball win those 50/50 battles - more more of this 6’ - 6’1 I mean they’re good too but just a little harder to make that grab against taller CB’S
Think we are going to see a turnaround in this QB situation I really think the Green kid can come in and be the Starter Plus you give Easters & Hawley a year or 2 tops learning then stepping in -plus Jalon not going anywhere we’ll be fine. -Our running backs is solid - -wanting to see if Neal can step in right away and contribute - -plus others coming back.
The big question mark once again is going to be the lines I think - - O- Line & D-Line - -.
I think our Defense overall will take strides this year, I think later this year - -next year this defense can be really salty WERE COMING BABY, not by far saying we gonna be taking any titles - - BUT saying WATCH we about to be competitive , finally again - -SOON - - REAL SOON
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m assuming a new coach would see that and want to keep Jones. Buffalo could easily promote Ianello and leave Jones as an AHC/WR at KU. Frankly I think (presumably) Goff would ask about Jones and if the new guy was smart he’d try really hard to keep him. Similar how Les kept Hull. And if you do the search in November Jones probably leaves anyway and may take some players with him. So if it’s going to happen regardless I think you hire your man now if it’s the same guy you’d hire in 8 months.
But there’s definitely a good case for riding it out with Jones. Best case he’s our Dabo, worst case he’s clearly in over his head and we agree to move on.

Personally & I know happens a lot. - -New Coach he wants to bring in his guys/new staff , I am hoping kind of like you mentioned that Leipold would at least interview Jones. The one BIG thing to retain jones on top of obviously others is his connection it seems with the players - -that showed when they was looking to name an interim - -had A LOT of current players say how much they waned Jones as the interim. - -Has to be worth something. I know you can’t have dictate who Coach’s are - yet you want that connection Coach’s/players - plus his recruiting ability. The man can recruit no doubt about that - -wish it was a little different scenario where we could just have named Jones as the HC. - -just not quite ready for that position yet . - -I like Jones for sure – & I’m pretty stoked on Leipold , with keeping Jones on your staff I think less chance of transfers out/players leaving.
I just feel pretty vitual we keep as much as possible to keep this roster in tact , and retaining Emmit on the Coaching Staff I would think would be a huge step to make that happen

yeah i dont know. finishing at bottom of recruiting rankings does not really bode well. the rankings i care about look at average player rating. if you rank by the number of stars KU is always near the bottom. yes they can and will improve. i dont doubt. but i dont know about becoming a winning program consistently.

Leipold record and conference division finish (recruiting ranking in MAC):
- 2015: 5-7, 4th in division (first class)
- 2016: 2-10, 6th (9th)
- 2017: 6-6, 4th (9th)
- 2018: 10-4, 1st (12th)
- 2019: 8-5, 3rd (7th)
- 2020: 6-1, 1st (12th)
Leipold’s teams consistently over perform their talent. There’s a lot of promising young players on the roster now who Leipold and his staff could really mold and develop into a winning program with time.
