Jalen Declares For Draft

  • Expected to be back, however.

  • Wilson will be back

  • Jalen receiving feedback on what he needs to improve to play at the next level is a good thing. I’m guessing it’ll be get better at shooting, defense, and jumping higher than 4 inches.

  • My guess would be next year will be Jalen’s last at KU, but Self will be able to recruit with that being the plan.

What is it that you do here dot gif

  • Someone fill me in. The stock explanation is “get feed back from nba scouts on what to work on”.

For years and years college coaches would get reports and feedback about players. What did this have to change? Do players not trust their college coach? Or is this actually more about feedback from agents?

NCAA changed the rules a few years back so that now a kid can go through the pre-draft process and have that experience which I think is overall a net positive for kids because they are also allowed to have guidance from a licensed agent while going through the process.

  • Jalen Wilson averages against big 12 11.7ppg 8rbpg 33% from 3

At absolute best he’s a 3 and D guy in nba. Not much d and slow 33% from 3

But go have a conversation with agents and scouts and feel like an NBA player for a few weeks.

    College basketball sucks now

Why is a player going through the process of learning what it takes to be a professional basketball player a bad thing? I don’t see Jalen ever being an NBA guy, but he absolutely will be playing professional basketball somewhere and this is nothing but positive since players can go through this process multiple times.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich You mean if I declare for the draft they’ll give me feedback on what I need to improve my game too?

@BigBad You can add feedback from fans on message boards. We all can tell Jalen what he needing to improve on. I’m trying to be funny but I’m not. We fans collectively can provide some insight on the skills and abilities of our favorite players.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich ha! Love the 4 inch vertical part. Did Jalen dunk once on the season? If so, can someone post the video?

  • Feedback from pro scouts is different because individual teams can tell a player how they might fit in their system.

Golden State is heavy on off ball movement. Philly runs lots of post ups and isos. Portland does a lot of PnR. Denver operates with Jokic in the high post or the extended post. In each of those systems, Jalen’s role would be different, so he will get different feedback from each team. Same on defense. Some teams switch everything. Some ice the PnR. Others trap it. Again, each of those roles requires different things, so the feedback is different, and specific in a way that college coaches just aren’t going to be because they aren’t on the inside of those systems to know what a team may envision someone like Jalen Wilson doing.

This is especially important for a guy like Jalen Wilson that is more likely to be undrafted than a high pick. This information may help him pick the best team to sign with if he does get a chance to break into the NBA in later years. Maybe he impresses a couple of scouts and that opens up the opportunity for him.

  • Jalen would be dumb not to do this, imo.

  • @BShark don’t they only take so many?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 yeah it is possible (likely even) he isn’t invited to the combine. It’s still smart for him to get feedback for the reasons @justanotherfan outlined.

  • @justanotherfan HAHAHAH I watch more NBA than college. They draft talent and that’s it. They will work talent into their team. They are not looking to slot 2nd rounders into a system. The NBA could drop the 2nd round and not a single team would care.

Go back and look at the drafts from 8 to 5 years ago and tell me how many guys are still in the NBA.

I don’t care that these kids do this, I’m just sick of college basketball recruiting kids who all think they are better than they are. Hell I’m starting to believe coaches are pushes kids out and saying “the scouts said he was a second-rounder, I don’t know what happened.”.

I wish it would go back to local kids who actually care about school and an early entry was few and far between.

There is a reason Roy brought up Kirk and Nick in his retirement press conferencee.

  • @BigBad I watch more NBA than college, too, particularly this year.

The top of the draft is absolutely about talent. But guys that get signed as undrafted free agents are almost always signed because they have a specific fit with their skillset.

Take a guy like Seth Curry. He went to Duke and was undrafted after starting his college career at Liberty. He’s been in the NBA for seven seasons now.

He’s been able to stay in the NBA because he’s an elite shooter/ball handler that understands defensive concepts enough to not get run off the floor.

He spent time in the G-League as well. But the big thing is that he developed after college by getting things to work on from pro coaches that ultimately have made him a solid guard off the bench.

That’s likely Jalen Wilson’s best hope. GLeague to NBA with the hope of being a rotation guy off the bench for a few years.

And it has worked out nicely for Seth Curry. He’s made about $17M in his NBA career.

  • The NBA is a specialists league. You have to do at least one thing REALLY well to break in. Jalen doesn’t have that, and probably never will. He won’t get a combine invite (maybe a G League combine?) and will promptly plop down in McCarthy for another year. I don’t begrudge any kid for seeing if he can make money in the Real World[sic]. We would’ve been stupendously better with Malik Newman in 18-19 at the 2 than Grimes and that would’ve been awesome (can you imagine his shooting with Doke and Dedric?), but he was never going to be a NBA guy. He’s making money playing hoops in Israel now. Good for him!

  • I would lobe to see Jalen come back to KU and develop further. However, I have a feeling that he will end up his college career at another school.

  • @AsadZ jalen isnt going anywhere. this is routine procedure for most of Selfs players

  • Jalen is a headsy player with a decent skill level. But he’ll have to lift his athleticism a big notch for the NBA. It matters how he develops, realistically he could use a couple more years of D1 while working on his body and skills.

I can see him develop into a NBA-caliber player but he really doesn’t have margin for making mistakes in his path. Leaving too soon will probably be one of those bad decisions if he gets too eager. I think it’s easier and safer for him to develop while living in the comforts of the college world. When he leaves McCarthy Hall will be gone, and he’ll enter a world of constant travel, hotels and chaos. Gone are the constant connections to strength and other coaching (even in off-season). Developing players at the next level is quite a racket. The pay is marginal and moving from team-to-team comes at a price.
