St Joes Game Thread

  • He had 5 assists

That was fun. This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for Dajuan Harris.

I like the looks of him - -made some nice passes - -looks like he defends pretty well

  • @Kcmatt7 said in St Joes Game Thread:

We were +21 in 16 minutes with Harris on the floor

Is this good if so why.

  • @Kcmatt7 said in St Joes Game Thread:

ya I heard that, can’t ask a lot more for your 1st extended time on the floor - -looks like he gonna be ok - - only one game but still

  • Easy to overlook Ochai dropping 18.

I LOVE Jalen’s willingness to compete. You can’t teach that. Shot is decent 6/9 from the line.

  • @Kcmatt7 in how many mins?

  • I see now

  • here is kind of a happy thought. - - Obaji - - Christian - - Jalen - - Harris - - Thompson all be the same classification next year as they are this year - -they retain their status - -yay I like that lol

  • @Kcmatt7 said in St Joes Game Thread:

Bill saying Harris just hasn’t practiced much so he didn’t play uesterday

    Edit: due to injury

Well hopefully thats behind him. Absolutely need him on the court

I think Jalen is going to be fine. - -we have some decent options there Wilson - - - Enaruna - -& others

  • Who all saw how sweet that was when Marcus just picked the St Joe’s player clean - -I mean just took it lol CLEAN

  • Playing Harris takes pressure off Marcus. I loved his poise.

To me Wilson is the most improved player from last year.

    Nice come back for Braun.

    Abaji needs to keep shooting.

Enaruna has talent and length, hope that Self can give him more PT.

Bryce will be a star by next year.

  • @jayballer67 with Harris on the floor Marcus can go back to being a defensive assassin

  • Agree!

I like the looks of Haris, I mean it’s just one game but I think he can be a solid PG for us for sure

  • The game changed completely with Harris as PG, the kid looked fearless.

  • @BShark lol

  • Jalen Wilson with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists off the bench today. He had a good game.

    On to Kentucky.

  • Can someone explain to me how is it they figure the Plus/Minus ? - Harris a plus 21 in 15 minutes

How many points better the hawks were with him on the floor. Telling stat

  • Braun with 30 is big time. Hopefully he can score like that against better competition.

Agbaji has been very consistent so far. Nice to see out of him.

The guys I don’t think mesh with this team are Enaruna, Lightfoot, McCormack and TGF. We need at least one of them to figure it out defensively because they are all liabilities on that side of the court.

  • This was the most enjoyable game for me in a while. I’m going to appreciate this season, a game at a time, however much of a season we get.

  • I will add Jalen Wilson has a skill set that will keep him on the floor. Really bouncy around the rim but can’t dunk. Weird combo to have. Shooting needs to improve and the bunnies. But he gives max effort out there. Defense is still a work in progress too

Definitely the game this squad needed after zaga. Some growth especially seeing how dominant Harris is at the little things

  • @BeddieKU23 he had a nice move yesterday where he dribbled through two defenders and was able to maintain control and get a nice shot off. His x axis quickness doesn’t seem connected to his Y axis hops.

We need Dave to up his hoops IQ, that can be hard.

    Who had this play?

  • I think Wilson. I still think enaruna will get better

I’d regulate Dave to first front court player off the bench. He can’t start against small teams and really against good teams until he actually proves his coach’s words are not just words…

Start Garrett, Harris, Braun, Agbaji and Wilson. That 5 gives us the best defense and passing lineups

Bring in Bryce and Dave as main backups.

Sprinkle in Tristan and TGF as the game goes.

    Regulate Mitch to emergency time.

Wouldn’t mind seeing what Muscadin can do for rim protection, rim running as well. His limited seconds have shown some singular skills that this team needs.

  • @BeddieKU23 Wilson.

  • So, a further thought about Dave (and I would love to see his ±). In 33 minutes in 2 games, he has 16 points and 9 rebounds. Doesn’t seem too bad. But that’s the best that can be said. VERY inefficient 16 points - 33% from the field (less than half Doke’s %). ZERO blocks. 7 turnovers. The fact is that the only thing he does reasonably well is shoot FTs. Notwithstanding his size, he doesn’t provide any real rim protection or interior presence. His footwork is poor as is his positioning. He is not an effective or efficient scorer. He doesn’t handle passes well and doesn’t pass well out of the paint. He works hard and puts in the effort, but he isn’t a starter quality at a top level program. He simply doesn’t make us a better team when he is on the floor - arguably the opposite. While he may be able to be reasonably effective against some teams, he is a liability against quality bigs - Timme owned him. Based on a limited sample set of two games, our best line-up most nights is going to be 5 guards/wings…

  • We are going to need him to get better. I’ve never been a big dave fan-fouls! He’s been better there, and he’s got a jumper. I hope he and tyon get better, we will need them. I love 5 guards, just outrun them. But in a half court, ahh not so sure. We do have a lot of options and some decent shooters. Good to see Harris👀! Dave’s a good guy, I want him to succeed

  • If he was even as good at defense as Perry or Landen I could live with the rest. He hurt his knee in the first half which is apparently why he came out worse in the 2nd half and ultimately didn’t play most of it.

Tyon is hurt as well, but we already knew that. It was very apparent unfortunately, you could tell just by watching.

  • You know, I’m calling it, this team is going to be struggle city this year - both ends of the court. Hope I’m wrong.

  • @approxinfinity said in St Joes Game Thread:

    @BeddieKU23 Wilson.

Thanks he has been impressive so far. Improved athleticism and he has that effort in him that you don’t see often from guys who missed a year, he’s got the effort of an upperclassmen. I have always been high on him even as the debate about him coming here was contentious on what position he’d play or role he’d carve out. I think what was missed was that for his size he had a lot of high level skills that fit in today’s game. Excited to see how he progresses

  • If Harris plays like he did tonight or anywhere close this team will not have issues scoring the ball. When him, Garrett, Ochai, Braun and Wilson are on the floor that is an elite passing/driving/shooting attack

  • Wilson needs to start over Dave, who is a major problem. He is always chasing the game. Drive and or kick it out and shoot, go small.

  • @DCHawker

Its a harsh reality and I hope he improves. He has to play better and if he doesn’t it will be a shame to see. I’ve been hard enough on him so for now I’ll be watching for positives from him instead of harping on all of his weaknesses

  • @Kcmatt7

Excellent point. If Harris can back up today’s play against Kentucky Self will have no choice but to play him heavily going forward. That kind of defense and unselfish play is hard to find.

I always think back to Self saying he would have played on last years team if he was eligible. Sometimes that kind of talk can be hard to believe but after today you get the feeling he wasn’t lying

really like his defense and his passing skill - -i know only one game but you can tellI think he gonna be solid for us

Definitely want to see him do it against teams like Kentucky. St Joes was tired and let’s face it a less talented team. It was exciting to see him on the court making such an impact but it begs to be seen if he can do those same things against bigger and more talented players

  • I like how the team seemed to mesh and flow better with Harris having primary ballhandling duties and Dave being on the bench.

  • I finally had time to watch the game this morning. A few things I picked up were

Marcus was fair at point other than he was trying to hard to get others involved instead of taking what was available. He needs to play the 2 and boy do we have a freshman that can play point

Christian just showed the freshmen the kind of effort they need to display at both ends if they want to steal his starting role. All the upside in the world can’t beat what he showed today.

If big Dave can’t rebound or defend better than what we saw he isn’t going to see the floor much.

I expected more from Mitch his effort seemed lacking which is odd.

Did I mention we have some freshmen that can play? Harris has some sick skills

Mitch is really really bad and I think most people are realizing that now. Unfortunately I’m not surprised but I get wanting to be hopeful for guys.

I think CB is locked as a starter the rest of his time at KU barring something insane.

  • @BShark yeah I don’t expect upper end skill or athleticism out of Mitch but I do expect effort. His blocked shot, foul? Really??, was pure effort. That was about all he showed tho.

  • Yeah he was otherwise really bad defensively in both games. Not surprised he only played 5 minutes against St Joe. Wilson and Tristan are better options at this point.

I wouldn’t say Mitch is bad BAD - -SURE he gets beat but as most saw last year 9-10 time he was able to recover and block the shot. - -Best shot blocker we have on the team - -takes Charges more then others do on the team - will get on the floor and get dirty for loose balls when others want to try and bend over and reach for the loose ball. Mitch does more then just try and score - - he is a or does the dirty work - -grabs a few rebounds , the thing he is bad at is Scoring. - -a lot just want to see that a guy scores and that’s it- -all they look at - -more to it then that. - Like I said he may not be the best defensive player either but a lot of time he recovers and still makes the play.

Mitch never gonna be a big time scorer but he ads a lot of other components to the game that others on this team don’t , or don’t want to have - -he is not a bad - -BAD player , hell I could even say he is ba - -but bad BAD ? - -wouldn’t go that far. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Boy St Joe has halted activities because of COVID. - -Gonzaga quarintine - -St Joe halting - that doesn’t sound good. - - Worried with Marcus having breathing problems the other day against St Joe - -hoping he has become down with the COVID

  • @Crimsonorblue22 said in St Joes Game Thread:

    @jayballer67 ?

they said Marcus was having some issues getting his breath after the game, , one of the things with COVID is effecting your breathing & lungs ? - -I’m not saying he is coming down with it - - I’m just hoping this isn’t the case
