2020-21 Non-conference Schedule
-
Stanford had the most varsity sports of any school in the country by a fair amount. I’m honestly surprised they lasted this long.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m sure they are the B10 is looking at only playing conference games. I’d say it’s only a matter of time before everything is cancelled at this point.
There’s too much money on the line for P5 conferences to cancel football and basketball. Those TV deals fund a very significant % of athletic departments at this level. In basketball, we’ll probably see the preseason tournaments get cancelled and a reduction in non conference games to regional opponents to minimize travel.
With the B10’s decision, I’m curious what’s going to happen to Notre Dame and BYU in football since they’re independent. ND could at least probably fill out a schedule with ACC teams since that’s their non football affiliation even though partnering with the B10 this year would make more sense for football because of being geographically in the middle of the B10 footprint.
BYU might be in more trouble trying to play football this year if the MWC, Pac 12, and Big 12 go conference only since BYU’s non football affiliation is with the non-football sponsoring West Coast Conference.

This is the first time I’m really doubting we get sports at all in the fall.

Stanford, has cancelled 11 sports programs thus far

The TV contracts for the P5 are too valuable which is why P5 leagues are going conference only. Other than the B12, every other league is big enough to play at least 11 games against FBS schools and get their full slate in.
This is also why the NBA is playing 8 regular season games before going into the playoffs and why there’s talk of a separate bubble set up for the other 8 teams so they can reach the number of games needed to meet local TV broadcast numbers and make that money as well because that’s their biggest income source.
I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see FCS and lower cancel football this year, not sure if the G5 will or not yet, but I still have a very difficult time envisioning P5 schools cancelling football this year simply because of the money involved.

KU’s originally scheduled game against Harvard on Dec. 29 that was cancelled because of Harvard not playing has been replaced by Stephen F. Austin. SFA is a damn good low major program and just last season upset then #1 Duke in OT at Cameron.
-
The PAC 12’s decision to cancel all sports for the 2020 calendar year affects 2 possibly 3 KU non-conference games. KU had games scheduled for Dec. 19 against USC in Lawrence and Dec. 22 at Colorado. KU’s preseason tournament this year is the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim where UCLA was one of the teams involved.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I think they would be well served to replace those games with teams from the midwest, if possible.
-
There’s a rumor floating around that the Champions Classic could be a round robin in a bubble. dook is going to be really good, but UK and MSU will be down slightly. Could be a good opportunity for us to make up some ground in this deal.

Not a word about boot camp?

Don’t know how many others seen this/read this , BUT actually Matt Tait actually believe it or not had a pretty good idea for the Season Non Con actually. I mean would make sense to me but who am I.
Matt said it would make for a really good Non Conference and actually would be pretty simple to do.
Here it is or the jest of it; We were scheduled to play 4 games before the 25th of November , so we are going to lose most those games , so Matt said ok we are in Orlando for the Champions Classic , so start the Classic on the 25th we play Kentucky like we are scheduled to play in the Classic. Then why not just turn the Classic into a Round Robin ?
P;ay Kentucky on the 25th - -Give the teams Thanksgiving off and then have a couple of days then and prepare then have them play on Saturday the 28th of November – KU/MSU - - - UK/Duke , Then give them a Couple of more days rest and prepare then play on the 1st of Dec when the Classic is typically played ? KU/Duke - - - UK/MSU - - hell of a 3 game round robin.
Makes some sense we are already there - - - -we would already be approved in the building - - -and testing and game protocal would help ensure two more games could be played.
So if we got those two additional games then he mentioned maybe just have the Wooden there too while we are there bring in Virginia and the other two teams we already there. That would give us 5 of our 9 non con games and then we have the rest of December to fill out the rest of the Non Con.
Keepthe Creighton game - - -and he said depending on what the Pac 12 might due by that time still be able to have Colorado and or USC game - - then you would always have the possibility of the Big 12/Sec challenge and Kentucky again -would be one hell of a non con.
Think it makes some sense to me - - tough non con but hey play the quality competition - - I like it. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

ESPN is reporting the Champions Classic to be held in Orlando. Also the Wooden Legacy in Orlando. KU is in both.

ya I seen that and I think this was in Mat’s train of thought - – were already there anyways - - why not
-
Pac-12 has agreed to play starting Nov 25th. That potentially saves the USC & Colorado games…

Has anyone heard - has the Champions Classic actually been finalized and where if it has? -I know they was talking like they were going to try to get it done but haven’t heard anything final and in Concrete anyone know ?

Saw today that KU and Kentucky are playing Dec 1 in Indianapolis. Not sure if Duke and Michigan State are playing there as well .
-
First game against Gonzaga is set for 12:30pm on Thanksgiving Day. Play St Josephs the next day as well in Fort Myers

I read that ESPN had mentioned or entertained the idea but guess not that seriously and not sure how much influence they would of had - -BUT guess it had at least been mentioned about Kentucky playing at the Phog for a minute - -but we see who has MORE pull lol

Duke and MSU played in East Lansing last season as part of the ACC/B10 challenge. Actually pretty reasonable that since the last on campus meeting was at MSU that the next one would be in Durham.

The MSU/Duke game has nothing to do with how pull Duke has. They played each other at MSU last season in the ACC/B10 Challenge so logic would dictate the next on campus game between the two should be in Durham at Duke.
The reason they’re playing on campus instead of in Indy with KU/Kentucky is because of the ACC and B10 Covid protocols not matching what the B12/SEC have in place in regards to neutral court games sontte ACC/B10 couldn’t come to an agreement to play their game in Indy as well.

Look, as a UNC employee I have a contractual obligation to dump on K and dook at every opportunity. Suffice it to say, this smells like K ducking another tough game. Sad!
