2020-21 Season: Will it happen?

  • @dylans interesting I didn’t know that

  • @kjayhawks I didn’t either, before this month…seemed relevant though. I was curious how it was handled 100 years ago. Turns out about the same. Scary to think we really haven’t advanced much on virus warfar in the last century.

  • IF we get enough low cost test kits to get a handle on how many people have actually gotten ill without showing symptoms serious enough to know they have even been exposed we can get a true count. If that count represents 60+% of the population having a decent shot of having some immunity or we get a vaccine things will loosen up for next season. Otherwise I think things will be delayed and tbh I do not expect any of the above to happen before the end of the year.

  • I think the virus will reduce as we continue to lock down tighter and the weather warms.

But eliminate it? Not going to happen soon because we have no herd immunity and it is heavily contagious. And the virus is embedded all through humanity everywhere. That makes me think it will be back in the fall for another significant run.

I think the death count will grow quite a bit now and will impact people to take it serious enough to accept continued reduction of crowd sizes.

  • It is going to take a long time to go away if we don’t find a vaccine. If it reduces here due to warm weather, it will increase in the Southern hemisphere, and return in the fall.

On March 19 (16 days ago) there were 244,000 world-wide cases. Now there are more than 4 times as many. There were 10,000 deaths. Now, 6 times that many. Of known cases with an outcome, the rate is 21%. If there are 10 times as many infections as officially counted (as many suspect), this thing is insanely burning a wide swath with no end in sight.

How can that all magically go away when we still have officials thinking they do not need to do everything in their power to fight it?

  • Not trying to be a bummer, but no I don’t. I don’t think there will be any football (college or pro) either - this next year is going to be a wash.

And that is not even taking into account the 2nd and 3rd waves that will need no help from the rest of the world to begin, having been born from the 1st that is now here.

  • Another theory (put forth by a doctor that specializes in this) is we are doing everything wrong. Kids should be in school getting exposed and building antibodies to the virus. Then they would be the first line of defense against the viruses future spread. Get enough healthy people exposed and immune to protect those that are susceptible from future exposure.

🤷♂️ even the experts can’t agree, but everyone is doing what they can and politicizing the issue is disgusting.

  • @dylans Everyone doing what they can? Hmm…no lockdown here for SC, ventilators and equip w/held from states needing them, POTUS not following his own experts’ recommendations on masks, gov of GA denying 2 months of info about asymptomatic transmission, people still having parties, etc etc etc.

And the WH has taken every opportunity to politicize this from the start and keeps doing it. Are we supposed to blindly follow the lies being spewed daily?

  • @mayjay I think you’re supposed to form your own opinion as opposed to having one given to you.

You can’t help stupid people from hurting themselves. We probably shouldn’t try. It would improve the gene pool.

  • @dylans Opinion yes, but public figures need to not try to present “alternate facts” which was a phrase invented by this WH.

  • @dylans On your second paragraph, the problem is that stupid people are killing other people, too, including thousands of pretty smart health care workers. Restricting availability of protective equipment isn’t cleansing the gene pool.

  • @mayjay yes 37487323-88B7-4E66-8DDF-40D67243D206.jpeg

Meanwhile a 19 year old friend of mine is volunteering in Seattle hospitals after the habitat for humanity project he was on got cancelled and all the healthcare professionals in the area quit out of fear. Personal responsibility is the only way out of this. Blaming the government is a great way to bury your head in the sand, divert blame, and do absolutely nothing to help.

Personally I’ve donated money I don’t have to others that need it more and hired people I don’t need for jobs that don’t currently exist.

Most of what I hear is fear turning people into brain dead zombies that are going to face multiple lawsuits when the dust settles and the constitution is upheld.

  • @dylans That cartoon is funny! I will enjoy seeing his appointment of medical expert Jared added to the cartoon!

And the unproven anti-malaria drugs are also used to treat lupus. Some lupus patients cannot get them now. Yeah, good job.

  • I get it you’re scared, you’re old and at mild risk. It’s people with underlying health conditions that are going to be at severe risk. The thing is they should’ve been culled years ago. Those genes are bad, but we (myself included) lack the intestinal fortitude to tell people not to breed instead we create a population that is weak and is putting us all at risk. Viruses are God’s/nature’s way of fixing this.

The blame game is a great diversionary tactic. 👏

  • @dylans really?

  • Don’t believe everything you read, the number of untested perfectly fine people is much higher than reported. My first hand experience is limited, but I know several of my friends that have it in Florida are ok and nearly out of quarantine. They are the lucky ones; they have antibodies now and should be immune for a year or two.

Lack of sports is killing the illusion that we can all get along when the only thing we have in common is KU basketball. With no other common ground it’s difficult to have a civil discussion about anything of importance. A series of monologues isn’t a conversion, it’s just exhausting with nothing gained - little to no entertainment value and most posts are only opinions with little to no factual content to absorb. Until recruiting picks up or actual games are played in front of fans I’m on hiatus. I get enough of weenies that just want to blame others on tv without actively inviting that level of jack-assery into my life. Do something if you’re that passionate other than bitch.

This is a terrible idea. In looking at the data, it’s clear that early action is key to saving a lot of lives. Our health system can’t handle that kind of influx of patients and hundreds of thousands (at least) will die from lack of care, genes be damned. I’m sure not willing to send that many to their graves because eugenics. This isn’t chicken pox where if you get it early you have a lifetime of immunity. Folks in China are getting reinfected months, not years, after original exposure.

I think it would take some very special calculations by the very brightest working in the area of infectious disease to come up with a plan.

Off the top of my head… we first must just survive this first wave. We are clearly completely unprepared for handling this pandemic and the virus itself has caught us off guard to the point of where we don’t know enough about it yet and how best to treat it. Right now, we don’t have enough supplies, staff, beds, ventilators, etc… and we don’t have adequate planning how to keep those infected away from those at high risk.

Let’s say the virus slows because of our social distancing and warmer weather (summer) and added humidity. The fall will arrive with a new threat of a second wave (very realistic expectation). If we have become capable to handle it we may try the following:

    1. Put great energy into protecting those at risk.

    2. Develop a lottery system with 4 inoculation periods.

    3. Run the inoculations with a 45 day gap and stay flexible to adjust the gap.

    4. Don’t make it mandatory but give cash incentives to those who participate and include sick leave pay and other expenses. Give free training and free helpful supplements, like NAC. I’ve already heard of NAC being used to help immensely.

    5. Manage the spread. Constant testing will be needed and social distancing will still be in use. Those who are inoculated and contagious will remain in quarantine during their illness.

Using a model like this will create a planned infection rate to bring up herd immunity within 6 months. So within a year from now we go back to more of a lifestyle we had before the virus.

Sounds bleak. But imagine this thing carrying on for years and our reaction being to keep closing down many things. Can our economy handle it? What about PTSD? We haven’t even discussed what this stress has already done to people. It goes without saying that between economic factors and stress there will be many deaths and extended illnesses coming not directly from the virus.

  • I guess there have been several scenario’s/possibilities tossed out by AD’s for solutions to the upcoming season. One is bringing back ONLY Student Athletes and starting on time , but playing in empty stadiums. - That seems kind of pointless to me. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

The reason every league worldwide discussed playing in empty venues is all about $$$. Leagues have to play a certain number of games to meet the minimum requirements to get paid. The NBA has a 70 game minimum which is why they’ve talked about pushing the season back to August and starting next season in December as a possibility.

College athletics is the same deal. Schools and conferences won’t make money unless they provide games for broadcast. This is also why Dana White and Vince McMahon have still been putting out new content to meet their TV requirements for UFC and WWE.

  • @dylans said “Scary to think we really haven’t advanced much on virus warfar in the last century.”

Even more scary to think that 100 years later we’re still too stubborn and stupid to do the right thing. I will admit that when this thing first surfaced I was pretty skeptical. And chances are astronomically high that if you wash/sanitize your hands and keep them away from your face, you’re not going to get it. And if you do get it, chances are very high that you’re not going to die. But - I’m all for the quarantine and doing things the right way in order to get back to a more normal way of life. I have a feeling that it’s never going to be exactly the same. Actually, I hope not.

Some, but the majority comes from TV distribution deals.

oh ok gotcha, I didn’t know really. I would of thought more would of come from the fans, by the time you figure the tickets, concessions and such - - just goes to show how much I know

  • Hard to imagine a world where Creighton is a one seed in the Midwest and Kansas is a 2 seed in the South… But ESPN has quite the imagination.

    Is that for next season?

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 yup. I know Creighton returned everyone… But I’m skeptical. Marcus is going to have a season.

  • @approxinfinity what in the hell is that nonsense

  • Creighton as a 1 seed Lmao still funny

  • Lightfoot is under-represented in that assessment.
