KU Team Picking Thinger

    @Texas-Hawk-10 best Defender

He was the best defender on Self’s worst defensive team to that point.

  • Devonte, Rush, Mario, Jackson, Embiid.

That’s a 4-1 lineup that takes the heart of our champ team imo (Rush/Mario) , and swaps RussRob and Shady for a 40% trey gun and Jackson, and a freak OAD at the 5 for Kaun.

I can’t believe I’m not taking Frank. But honestly as amazing as Frank was, DTae was the glue of that team, and with all those weapons around him I think he would be an unstoppable lead guard.

My other big dilemma was Svi or Jackson. I really want to take Svi to have 2 40% trey guns but he would get abused at the 4 and Jackson, while the lesser shooter, was a better utility 4.

  • @approxinfinity don’t forget Svi against duke!

  • 5$ line, 3rd person, Name?

    4$ line, last person name?

    3$ 1st person?

    2$ 1st, 4th?

    1$ 2nd?

Sorry, revoke my Jayhawks fan card, but an exercise like this needs some names instead of just faces.

  • Sherron, Simien, Wiggins, Tyshawn, Embiid, Releford

    @wissox

  • @BShark Thanks

  • @wissox lol. Good one

  • IDK. Selden, Embiid, Chalmers, Rush, Graham. 4 out, 1 in. Self not gonna like it, but it is what it is!

  • Tyshawn, Mario, svi, rush, trob. Small line up, good defense except for svi. Several shooters surrounding tyshawn who was a good driver and a slightly better passer then someone like Dotson. Trob was the most dominant anterior scorer self had

  • @jayhawks2010 hard for me to pass up my favorite, Trob!

  • We as KU fans are lucky to have such great players & difficult choices:

    1 - Mason($5) or Collins($5) similar #s but I chose Mason because he was a beast rebounding. (Mason= Clutch/Scorer/Playmaker/Rebounder)

    2 - Graham($5) or Chalmers($3) both great but I chose Chalmers for the value at $3. (Chalmers= Clutch/Scorer/Playmaker/Defense)

    3 - Rush($4), Wiggins($3) or Jackson($1) Rush is best but chose Jackson for the value at $1. (Jackson= Playmaker/Defense/Rebounder)

    4 - Semien($4), McMorris($2) or TRob($5) People are sleeping on Semien (SR YR 20pts/11trb) (Semien= Clutch/Scorer/Rebounder)

    5 - Embiid($2) or Dok($3) Embiid for $2? Please… From bench warmer to best player on team in 1 season (Embiid= Scorer/Defender/Rebounder)

  • @KUJayhawks67 so Mason/Chalmers/Jackson/Simien/Embiid. I really like how you’re borrowing from a variety of different generations of Self ball. Frank played 1 year with Embiid and 1 with Jackson but I think that’s the only overlap. My weakest link here I think Wayne at the 4. I think he didn’t shoot the 3 enough for today’s bball without masking that with a deadeye SF. This team has balance, defense, and complete badasses. It would be a pleasure to watch them compete and I’m sure they could figure out everything by March under self! Also the right bench could get us flush with 3 ballers.

Welcome to the board! Great post.

  • For me: Frank ($5), TRob ($5), DDot ($3), Josh ($1), and Rele ($1). That was my first gut reaction/picks because Svi turned it over too much for my liking but upon second thought he would actually fit great in that team with the two point guards and basically could just be the 3 point sniper.

Interesting line-up but not much shooting. Releford basically had to be wide open.

  • @BShark Releford wasn’t much of a threat from deep, but he only missed about one layup his Jr and Sr years. combined. Great on D. He’s a bit underrated as a glue guy, but doesn’t wow either.

  • I’d like to see Graham and Chalmers play together. With Embiid and Marcus Morris in the post -wow that high low action would be amazing both are great passers. Fill in Wiggins at the three (or use Selden, TRele, JJackson and switch depending on matchups)

  • @approxinfinity Thanks for the welcome!

I really went back and forth between Wayne & Marcus. Marcus gives the better perimeter def/off player but I felt that Wayne and Joel would be devastating in the high-low offense. They could both dominate in the high and low spots and average 35+ pts combined. You then have 3pt shooting with Chalmers & Mason at 47% and Josh Jackson at a surprising 38%. (This is all based on each players final season stats)

  • @KUJayhawks67 JJ was 38%? My recollection was off on that! Good call there. I remember him being CLUTCH! That baseline drive and dunk in Duke’s face was priceless.

I would love to see the high-low come back with 2 guys that can compliment each other and run it. Dave and Doke looked lost together (mostly I think because Dave just isn’t a 4) but I definitely think Self’s dream of a functional high low throwback in a 4-1 era is achievable with different personnel.

  • Reading the title to this reminded me of Happy Gilmore lol. “Step up and try to out drive the amazing golf ball whacker guy!!”

@BShark @dylans its funny how all of our lasting memories of these players varies. I actually thought my lineup did have shooting - haha. I remembered Releford being solid from three (Sr Year only, before that was yikes!) and Frank great. Also never minded Dotson shooting a three either. Went back and looked up stats… in their final years Releford 42% from 3, Frank 47%, and Dotson just 31%. First two were higher than i would have guessed and Dotson lower.

  • @RockkChalkk As I recall Releford was good at picking his shots. Dotson was a just an average to poor shooter with amazing speed. Mason’s senior year was truly special, he shot over 50% from three most of the year.

Stats be damned I’d take Graham over about anyone when starting a team just for his leadership abilities. But it gets me excited thinking about the synergy Graham and Chalmers would have on the defensive end. Teams would absolutely hate playing against us.

  • Josh’s final % ended up much better than I remembered. His shot never looked good to me.

@dylans That was my recollection as well. I looked and it was a different time especially for Bill but Releford in 700 more minutes took about 20 more threes than FR Braun did.

  • @BShark I wish Josh would get his head on straight. He’s a baller and could be a very nice supporting piece.

  • I went back and forth on Dotson and Chalmers for my 2nd guard spot.

  • @BShark Jr Dotson would take it…

  • @dylans in my mind I was envisioning final products. At the very least everyone gets to SR year. Might have been better with Mario. Raining threes either way.

So it was Graham, Dot, Rush, Svi, Embiid or sub in Mario for Dot. Honestly how damn good does Graham, Mario, Rush, Jackson, Embiid look? Damn.

  • Cole Aldrich to me is the most underrated and underappreciated player in the Self era. He was a stud. I still blame the Northern Iowa loss on the guards trying to do everything themselves. Cole’s average dropped his junior year because the team had more talent than his sophomore year but he still should have been the focus.

  • I added Reed on the bench for his outside shooting.

  • @dylans said in KU Team Picking Thinger:

He cant shoot. Head straight or not. His defensive ability is good but a guy like him needs to be a good spot up 3 guy to stick in the league. He doesnt have it.

  • I’ve gotta go with Josh Jackson ($1), the Morris brothers ($2 each), Devonte Graham ($5) and Mario Chalmers ($3).

Even though Jackson isn’t much of a shooter, I can space the floor around him with relative ease, and he can post up just about any three if we go that route.

My offense runs smooth with Graham and Chalmers because they can rotate ballhandling duties, just like they did when they were on campus.

This is also a very good (maybe even great) defensive group. I could potentially switch Kieff out for Embiid to get a bit better defensively, but if we are judging only their production at KU, Kieff was better than Embiid.

  • @justanotherfan lots of T’s team🤣

    Bad boy Jayhawks 😎

  • @justanotherfan Morris twins are always a package deal in my mind anyway.
