  • you know guys , might sound a little strange , I mean I personally didn’t know Kobie from Joe Smoe - - never seen him in person once in my life. yet having said that but hurts a little bit , makes me kind of hurt, actually almost to some tears - - - kind of crazy huh , and I apologize but this guy was a basketball icon. I watch him grow through the game can remember when he came out of high school. One of the 1st I believe to by pas College for pro I believe - -just a sad - -sad day.

You can just tell the guy LOVED his Daughters - - he did love his daughters. - - and the things he did to try and help the ladies in the game of Basketball - so many people hurting - -sorry guys , jut a sad day for me - -just a big baby I guess but Kobie not hurting now Thank GOD for that - -he will be missed. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • So have the found the reason for what happened to the helicopter causing the crash yet ?

  • https://twitter.com/tristanjass/status/1221540372456845313?s=21 Kobe’s sweet angel! Looks just like him

  • @jayballer73 I don’t think they’ve said. Eye witnesses said engine sputtering, flying low, hazy. Who knows, so much false info. Does sound like they hit the side of a mt, hard to get rescuers there. So very sad, I just can’t fathom their pain.

  • I wasn’t a fan of Kobe as a player. I thought he was arrogant and obnoxious. From high school to annointed one. A poster child for the arrested development that comes with going straight to the league.

But after his retirement he seemed to grow a lot as a person. Without the weight of being a ferocious competitor on the court, he focused his energy elsewhere. By all accounts from those who knew him well, this was the happiest he had ever been. He seemed to be branching out into art, and investments and was spending quality time with his kids. It seemed like he had a lot more to do that he had deferred during his career.

    Sad.

um , um , um . I heard maybe foggy , guess that would make sense if flying low could possibly hit the side of mountain. - Just a tragic day in the sporting world. -Yet kind of puts things in perspective , loss of life and his little girl. Nothing more precious then the little ones.

Mercy among many , many others – Jay Williams taking it really hard. Doc Rivers really hard. - -Saw them talking you know he had 4 precious girls and you could tell he was one PROUD DADDY

You could see and just feel his love for the game , kind of Crazy he gave LeBron his shoes when Lebron came on the scene

Just so may experiences Jay Williams talking about his one and only year in the NBA and Jay was talking about going through his training and seeing Kobie working out before him. - -He said he went through his workout and left and looked down and saw Kobie STILL doing his work out and thinking - -there is no way this guy is going to be ready for the game after going through this training session. - -He said he thought no way should I ask but I did. He said I asked Kobie man why you STILL training ? - - Kobie’s response - - because there is NO WAY am I going to let you be better then me

  • @approxinfinity If it makes you feel any better my college roommate went to high school with Kobe; he was arrogant then too. Your thoughts mirror mine on his career, but as you said you could see Kobe was just coming into his own. He had an interesting upbringing - spent time overseas too. He had more education than just his HS diploma even though he went pro straight out of HS. I think Kobe was a very intelligent man who had a lot more to offer. This has made me more sad than I thought it could.

  • I moved to outside the LA area last year. Yesterday morning was fog so thick I couldn’t see more a few yards past the window, and hung around a good part of the day. I wouldn’t want to be have been flying in that stuff at all. So tragic his daughter on board too. 😞

I guess they had said that they was supposedly all copters were grounded. - - - Have they determined what the cause was ? - -was it because of foggy conditions ?

  • @jayballer73 I read that police choppers were grounded and that Kobe’s got special permission to fly despite the weather.

The New York Times reported this morning that the helicopter was granted a special waiver to fly even though foggy weather conditions were below usual standards. It went on to say:

According to audio records between the helicopter’s pilot and air traffic control at Burbank Airport, the helicopter was given what is known as Special Visual Flight Rules clearance, allowing the pilot and his passengers to continue on a foggy morning in Southern California. Whether or not that was the right decision is likely to be at the center of the investigation into the cause of the crash.

  • @mayjay You beat me to it, but I get credit for using more words!!

  • @bcjayhawk You used not only more words, but cooler and officialer words, too!

  • @mayjay I like it when I can be officialer

  • Retrospective of Kobe’s final game is bumping KU game to ESPN2.

Wow , that’s kind of crazy isn’t it? - - I mean if it was what they determined that it was to foggy for law enforcement Copters - Shouldn’t it be to foggy for Kobe ? - -So the FOG WAS the cause

If that indeed turned out to be the case , I mean if they are grounding Copters because of fog , and yet somebody gave Kobie’s copter special permission to fly or gave Kobie’s pilot permission and this happened - -then who ever gave that permission could be up for some massive law suits

Again Like I told Mayjay - -if they grounded all Police Copters and then turned around and gave Kobie special clearance to fly - - somebody’s ass could be in a real sling. - - Big time law suits

  • @jayballer73 Way too soon to draw any conclusions. More info is coming out about the copter waiting @ 15 mins for air traffic, and dialogue with controller telling pilot too low, followed by climb from 1200 to 2000 ft, then crash at 1700 at 160 mph.

Stall from too steep a climb at a high speed in really humid air? May be a possibility. Interesting article here:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retreating_blade_stall#Causes_of_retreating_blade_stall

I am not an aeronautical engineer so this is just tossing around some theories. Don’t beat me if I got something wrong!

EDIT: Corrected info below from NTSB.

  • Still trying to come to terms with all that’s happened in the last eight days.

Between Kobe’s death, the KU-State brawl and its aftermath, and the Chiefs game, I’m dealing with serious emotional whiplash. And I’m probably not the only one.

Listening to all the posthumous tributes, the words that keep going through my mind are “what might have been.”

I wasn’t a Kobe fan, but appreciated what he was trying to do in his later years, especially as a mentor to young players.

And I can’t think of a big-name male athlete who was as big a supporter of the women’s game. Obviously as a coach for his daughter, but I was surprised to hear about how many young female players (including several here in the Northwest, like Ionescu at U. of Oregon) who talked about the time he spent to talk with them and encourage their progress.

Likewise, all the other victims had dreams and plans that came to an end. Kobe was just the biggest name in the group.

Sad for all the families involved, not to mention the greater basketball family.

  • Ya I could see a lawsuit coming for sure. I’m not blaming anyone but I’m not sure I would’ve granted him permission if every other helicopter was grounded and if I’m Kobe with my daughter, other children aboard. I’m not taking a risk in that situation.

  • @jayballer73 This link has (more accurate) NTSB details about the flight and lots more information.

thanks. Haven’t read it yet , but am hearing on the News I guess they originally took off more like under normal conditions and then like 14 minutes into their called in for special flying instruction , the pilot said he was going to try and climb above the nastier weather
