Nova Game Thread

  • I enjoyed our long stay at #1.

  • We don’t need to worry about #1. Baylor beat Butler, Arizona, and NOVA! We better start wondering about the Conference and how we will perform there. Right now I am not too confident.

  • So the two best teams KU has played they have lost. Time to temper expectations. Your best player has to step up and finish the game. Just disappointing

  • @BeddieKU23 the last 2 minutes is what separates Dotson from Frank Mason and Devonte

  • @rockchalkwyo To be fair he is only a SO. A shame we won’t get to see his JR season.

  • Anybody hear we had a player not check in the last time out? Self said he thought he could just walk in. I’m guessing he meant doke. Was listening on the radio. We get Marcus back, and it sounds like it’s not as serious as last time, we beat these guys. I don’t care if it’s at Christmas break or April fools day. I’ll still take Self over I don’t wanta be right.

Agree HOWEVER… Frank had Devonte and Svi around him which spread the floor. This team can not shoot so teams can help more against Dotson.

Three three pointers made in a college game in 2019 is recipe for a loss EVERY SINGLE TIME.

  • Really bad last minute for Dotson. Bad TO, missed FT, missed tough layup. Although the breakdown on the last possession was us having only 4 seconds for the play. Hard to believe that nova shot as poorly as they did from 3 and we lost. I can’t even process this loss.

To pile on to how baffling it is…

  • I went to watch the new stars wars movie at half time, just watched the second half. We really need to stop scheduling anyone but a cupcake for this game. We were the better team IMO, just looked like we had better things to do and weren’t focused. Dot was terrible down the stretch, just like the Dook game but I’d rather him have to learn now rather then in March. This year is like 2011 where this isn’t a obvious number 1 or 2 team. There could be 20 teams with a title shot given the right road.

  • Obviously, our lives are ruined. We have a horrible team, a horrible coach, stupid strategies, and a loser history.

Of course, one made basket at the end would have made the guy who made it a hero, the team gritty despite an injury to our most important glue guy and defender, our coach a brilliant adjuster, a fantastic defensive plan, and proof that KU is back to its winning ways.

People, please get a grip. It was a December game. Might foreshadow, might teach. For all the doomsayers about what it “means” about March, I can do better: I know I could describe every team in division I as not capable of winning the championship, and I will be 99.7% correct.

  • @mayjay The analysis of this game should have nothing to do with the bounce of the ball at the end of the game.

  • @mayjay I don’t think I’d even be mad if I was in coach Selfs shoes. I’d just tell the guys that’s what happens when you aren’t focused on the task at hand, we are the better team we just let them steal it away. We have to learn to finish those games when we don’t play well, that’s 2 on us guys. Hopefully y’all have learned and there isn’t a number 3, now get you butts home and gave a merry Christmas. Lol

  • So is KU any good? They’ve lost to the two best teams they’ve played and freakin’ Dayton took them to overtime. With any luck this will be a good teaching point, but it’s about time for the guys to get their act together so we can see some advanced play in March.

Dotson’s gotta learn from this game…wow he folded down the stretch. Turnover, poor decision making initiating the offense. Drawing a foul with 17 second left and missing the free throw… he’s got so much to learn and I’m afraid it’ll be too late if he doesn’t get it right now! He’s gone after this year and I don’t think he’s anywhere near his potential as a leader.

  • @Big-Clyde52 I could think of many other bad losses. Let’s hope this ugly play against top 20 teams get worked out now. This is my definition of a good loss.
See UNC, Puke, MSU, UK…feeling better? I am.

  • @Big-Clyde52 I track you completely. Doke has GOT to improve. I’ve never seen a more horrible FT shooter, other than Shaq, and his problem is between his ears. Christian hits his FTs, Dotson hits the front end of his 1-1, they eek it out on the road. But this is their first rough road test. They did some things right on the road in a really rough environment. They need to refocus and put this game behind them. Another definition of a good loss. You had losing to Nova, I had losing at all. But at least it was a top 20 team, on the road, hostile environment, and Garrett would’ve been the difference.

  • @nuleafjhawk Its early and I think we all knew it was likely short lived. We played like crap, lost a key player, and still lost by 1 in a really tough environment. It hurts, but not too bad. The rankings are more for the writers to play their games. They actually had KU losing before they even took the spot. I really don’t care and we all say it every year, but we still get hooked on the #1 spot. March and April are all that matters.

  • @BigBad You realize Nova shot 24% to our 23% from the arc? The arc was not the ultimate problem in this game. I disagree. You live and die by the arc. If Nova hits half of those misses, and some of their misses were really close, this game could’ve been lopsided. We just don’t have enough fire power. I don’t get it. Self or players are so conservative or hesitant. Nova’s inside game was to mug and hack Doke. If Doke and Dave hit their bunnies, and or we make maybe 1-2 of those missed Fts, this game is different. Overall, Self’s game plan worked, we just lost a key piece early in the game. This was a fluke of a loss.

  • As I read about the game two points were made…Braun was not a good FT shooter even in High School? Doesn’t make sense if he is supposedly a good 3 pt shooter. Also, Dotson playing 37 minutes might have contributed to his poor play down the stretch.

  • The best thing a PG can do with his ball in his hands late is to focus on creating a shot for another player with taking an open layup or opportunity if it presents itself. Dotson seemed focused on trying to score. In a final possession moment, that is the wrong focus. I think most coaches would agree with that. I’d have rather seen him drive at Agbaji’s defender and try to get him a relatively open shot or drive opportunity.

Actually, I’d rather see us run a set play. But I’ve been on that gripe for years. You know, one of those set plays that leads to a dunk, an open shot, or dish to the hoop.

  • Not that I’m about to give an excuse to Dotson for the way he played down the stretch but it’s clear rewatching the game Dotson was tired from having to be the primary ball handler most of the game after Marcus went out. We even saw Braun handling the ball so Dotson could get the ball on the left wing and go around a ball screen to initiate offense. Dotson turning the ball over late and missed free throws clearly pointed to fatigue.

  • No xray needed for Garrett looks like he will be fine in a few weeks

that’s good to hear. - -Christmas break - - - then out the Stanford game , maybe maybe good to go against WV

He will probably be less then 100% for a while. Not good either way

  • @jayballer73

True. It looked bad. I’m hoping they dont push him to play on it less then 100% like they did for months last yr

  • @BeddieKU23 History suggests he will play before he is 100%. For better or for worse, I don’t know. @jayballer : Yes…I am relieved it was not worse. The way he was holding it, up high, I was worried about some type of fracture.

I’m sure he will he is a tough kid who wants to play with his team. I just think if the injury isnt as serious as last season that they really let him heal. We saw how much his presence on both ends of the floor was impacted by him not being out there

  • I bet the injury scared him too! 🙏 for quick recovery! I’m pretty sure everyone can finally see how valuable Marcus is to our team🙄. He was trying his hardest to help on the bench!🙌🏾
