Guys I'm saying IF things happened - -Danny Manning ?

@jayballer73 I don’t think so. Just isn’t ready…if ever. I know he won’t be the popular choice but he has more than proved himself.

No , I’m not talking about being the head Coach - - I’m talking about Danny working with our Big men like he had previous while he was on staff here

If it was me I would not replace any coach during the season to avoid discontinuity but bring him back in some capacity.
Agree I’m sure Danny will finish this year, but IF he were to get fired by Wake at the end of the Season - -then brig him back next season to work with the big men. - -I know he is not on real solid ground at Wake

I would definitely welcome him back. But if I’m Manning, I would not come back to KU as an assistant. Manning is 53. Why be an assistant? He could get a head job somewhere pretty easily.
ya, that’s what I’m thinking too. - -just dreamin - -I would love for him to come back and work with our big’s again - but like you said he has already Coached at a Couple of Schools now - -Wake & then who was it? - -Tulsa or Oral Roberts – Think Tulsa I know he loves KU but just really don’t think he would come back in an asst roll

@jhawk7782 I think he was just saying to coach the “Bigs”, not be THE coach. If I read it right, I would get on a plane, rent me a car with a lot of legroom and drive Danny back to Lawrence on my own dime.
If not, then I’m with you - I don’t want him as our head coach.
yes your right bud. - Was talking in the aspect of just Coaching/working with our big’s - -& again like you not sure I’d want him as a HEAD Coach as much as I like Danny there would be better for sure
-
IF Manning were let go at WF, I’d see him more as an assistant coach in the NBA in order to hone his skills. I’d think he’d only be at KU if nothing else were available, a highly unlikely scenario. I doubt stays at the P5 level, a low major school might beckon, or a mid-major. He really hasn’t done much at Wake, where it’s incredibly hard to recruit better players to play against good competition. Perhaps if the competition were less, as in a mid-major, he could succeed/exceed.

If we have to put Townsend out to pasture for the NCAA garbage I’d bring Danny back in a heartbeat.
-
@FarmerJayhawk I would be surprised if Self would permit a sacrificial lamb, particularly when Townsend was operating at his direction. I’d be shocked. I think Self is indignant and angry (I’m sure because he knows others do exactly what we were busted for). If he permits that to happen, Townsend sacrificed, I don’t quite know what I’d think yet for sure – but my initial take is I’d rather Self stand up for his assistant if this is the position.

Yep, that move would have to come from Long or above.

I could see Self saying, “If he goes, I go” – which is another risk factor that aligns with the possibility that Self could leave, related to this issue.

I believe that possibility is quite remote.

Manning was a much much better bigs coach than Roberts currently is IMO.
-
@kjayhawks how can you compare? Look at our bigs since Danny left.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 all of our bigs were considerably better outside of Embiid when Danny was here.
-
@kjayhawks it really is hard to tell. @Crimsonorblue22 has a point.
DURING DANNY
Mannings worked with bigs: Wayne Simien, Julian Wright, Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun, Cole Aldrich, twins Marcus Morris and Markieff Morris, Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey. All NBA players.
Roy recruited Wayne. Julian wasn’t recruited by anyone listed on rivals. Darrell was recruited by Townsend and Jank (whose leaving opened up spot for Danny). Dooley left in 2013. He recruited Kaun and Cole. Darnell wasnt recruited by anyone listed by rivals. Morrii weren’t recruited by anyone (rivals). Tom Rob was recruited by Self. Don’t know who got Withey to come over. We had others. Giles, etc.
AFTER DANNY
Danny left in 2012.
Cliff Alexander was the #4 recruit in the country (off court problems derailed?). Cheick Diallo was the #5 recruit in the country. Maybe those two should have been better? Silvio wasn’t ranked on Rivals. Maybe he should be better? Jury is still out, he’s barely been eligible. Preston was the 11th ranked recruit, but he never played. Embiid was the #25 recruit in country (rising a lot after signing with us) and exceeded all expectations. Carlton Bragg had off court problems. Hunter didnt get run. Landen, Ellis, Tarik, Doke achieved their potential. Other than Cheick and Silvio, who do we think could have been better if Danny was still here?
[IN]CONCLUSION:
This seems like a lot of talented players that were either pulled over by an assistant that has since left, or weren’t recruited by anyone.
Meanwhile the guys we recruited after Danny left seemed like a few headcases, a few overachievers, and not a whole lot of [eligible] NBA talent. Preston’s an idiot. Silvio got in trouble.
It seems like the issue is we didn’t recruit nearly as well this decade as we did last decade, and recruits no longer cAmE tO kAnSaS bY tHeMsElVeS ( @BShark did i do that right? ), and when they were here a lot were headcases (maybe Danny could have helped straighten them out, but hard to say). So it’s very hard to tell Danny’s actual impact.
-
How 'bout Wakes bigs? Collins was really good.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Good point. Collins is probably Danny’s biggest success story on paper, as he was a 3 star recruit. But he didnt get the Kansas bump like Embiid did.
-
I’m really, really impressed with Doke this year. He’s blowing my mind a little bit. And it makes you realize how important conditioning is. It takes a village to make a big man. I’d take this year’s Doke over Sasha, Darnell, Cole, Wright, possibly any of “Danny’s” bigs other than Darrell. Without Darrell, we don’t win against Memphis. The Morrii are hard to compare, because they’re a package deal. I wouldn’t trade the package for Doke, b/c together they were very very good.
-
To be fare we are talking about wake. In my humble opinion he should have never gone to wake.
-
I’m not sure the river boat gambler could get it done at wake.
-
@approxinfinity I think you actually made a compelling case proving @kjayhawks point. Regardless of who recruited them, Danny’s guys all went pro. Post Danny guys (see what I did there?) Other than Dok all went nowhere…and even Dok wont make the League.

In a heartbeat. Imo our bigs have been nowhere near what they were when Manning was around - and that’s going back a ways. I think that he would also help land more than only a few quality recruits.

Doke WILL make league. And Embiid is the best big we’ve had under Self, if NBA success is the metric (I don’t think it should be). I guess if you count JJ as a big, thats another high draft league player post Danny. Tarik made league.
We only had one high recruit off court derailment under Danny (Giles) and, post Danny we had 3 (Silvio, Preston, Cliff)
I think Diallo is the most glaring case of needing Danny. I’m willing to go all in on that: Danny would have made Diallo better than he was.
-
Who was the “Bigs” coach when Wilt was there?
That dude gets my vote.
-
Kansas just hasn’t had the post talent since Danny left. Is that partially because the allure of having Danny here helped draw recruits in? Or is it just the recruiting cycle? I do think Danny could help coach up the bigs (dream scenario), but I don’t think it would really make that much of a difference. The 4-1 is here to stay unless Kansas snags a special player at the 4 spot (JRE/Hurt come to mind).
-
@Fightsongwriter Diallos’s doing quite well
-
What bigs from wake are in the league?
-
Remember diallo only stayed a yr. he’s still learning but making money

I think Danny could help in drawing in that more elite mobile big that could cover in open space a little more. - -Danny just worked really well with the Big’s while he was here

Currrently,
John Collins as mentioned
Al Farouq-Aminu- Pre Danny
Jaylen Hoard- Danny 5 star recruit from last year.
James Johnson- Pre Danny
So Danny has sent 2 bigs to the league in his short time with Wake.

@jayballer73 Reading is fundamental. Manning would be both a valuable asset in bringing along talent AND would be a great recruiting asset as well.

Exactly – probably wouldn’t happen but man would be nice to get him back - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@Woodrow Kind of an easy question:
He has been a head coach since 1998.
In 2 years he turned Jacksonville into a winning program.
He got Witchata into the Sweet 16:
He completely turned the Texas A&M program around w/4 straight NCAA appearances.
He has had sustained a winning program in the BIG10 but it has been a mixed bag at Maryland. 190-93 overall but no deep NCAA runs. That would be his downside throughout his career that has 430 wins and 252 losses.
Never said he was my first choice but he will be taken under consideration and being an alum does matter.
Couch Bennet would be my first choice but he might say no. KU isn’t promised anything. We’ve had a remarkable run w/head coaches but maybe the next one is abysmal and sets the program on a downward side. Turg would win at Kansas.
*I didn’t read the post thoroughly before replying and that wasn’t too smart. The reason I said Turg was that he has won everywhere he has coached. No one would be better at coaching bigs but that would be a big step down for Manning.
-
Reading is fundamental, couldn’t resist! Kidding you though
-
KNOCK on wood!! Dok gets more than his share of injuries. I hope he makes it all year. McCormick is big and talented and maybe the better of the two. I believe Silvio has the highest upside IF he can find his game. Starting to see just that.
Best for us if Manning comes back (don’t think it will ever happen) but I cannot see him coming back to KU. Pride is hard to overcome but Manning would shine building a mid-major team and I think that is more likely.
-
@dylans We’ve had plenty of post players since Manning. Few at his level but very close. Raef LaFrentz, Scot Pollard, Paul Pierce, Drew Gooding, Wayne Simien, Nick Collison, and that’s only a partial list under Coach Roy.
Maybe not as good as Manning but more than just good
-
I think one thing is obvious… Townsend won’t be sent packing and then Self makes his exit a public dispute. That won’t happen. I don’t see Townsend being separated from Self, but if he was we would never know the details. It would be something handled behind closed doors. And then we would be given one of those “happy endings” type of reasons why.
I don’t see Danny returning unless it is a situation where he will eventually step in to the HC job. Danny may have his struggles at WF but he is a guy that has done nothing but build his reputation in the D1 world as a quality coach. Let’s face it… it’s no bowl of cherries coaching WF basketball. It is a worse scenario than coaching KU football. It’s a power conference and it’s a team that has continually taken a beating.
What Danny could use is an opportunity at a school where it isn’t the whipping post for decades. Those opportunities are rarely available.
Would Danny be offered the job of HC at Kansas if Self disappeared? I’m not sure.
-
@approxinfinity Embiid is in the NBA.

Maybe not as good as Manning but more than just good
I meant under Self when Manning was an assistant and after. I just think the talent is the difference more than coaching in that period.

Guys stayed longer too.

I mean compared to when Danny was at KU
-
@Crimsonorblue22 By your definition of ‘quite well’ I am a billionare! Lifetime 5pt 4 rb a game. 1 start. The very definition on “meh”
-
@Fightsongwriter Not a lot of luster to that no matter how much it gets polished. Sorry @Crimsonandblue12 Diallo is just potential unrealized at all levels. The only thing he’s reached his potential for is interesting conversation. I hope no one tries to prove me wrong.
