Hudy going to Texas

Long said, “We appreciate Coach Hudy’s contributions to Kansas Athletics and are proud that she has been recognized nationally as a role model for young women who are interested in sports performance. We wish her well as she pursues other challenges.”

Just a role model for young women? I (40 year old man) respected the hell out of her! Does Long have a problem with Hudy? Is he a meat head? Or did he just adopt a bad policy?

    Weird.

Will be interesting to see who the replacement is.

  • I noticed that too.

  • I don’t even recognize Doke with his new Hudy Body!

  • @dylans I think the comment about being a role model for young women is due to Hudy breaking down people’s stereotypes about s & c coaches. No one ever doubted that men can be those coaches, but she no doubt brought attention to women that these jobs can be sought by them.

Unless you were familiar with Hudy at UConn, how many of us KU fans even considered that the basketball s&c job might be filled with a woman?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Got to wondering if this isn’t a “last chance” to save Shaka’s job…He is definitely on the edge and attendance has dramatically nose dived. Plus they have to pay for the new stadium and with turnout so low, they look to be on their heels and gasping for any reasons to blame past years’ efforts on “not having the right strength coach” and telling fans to “give it some time”.

no this is not to save his job

  • @JAYHAWKFAN214 any more info?

Had she remained at KU, Hudy’s job would have looked slightly different this fall.

KU in May announced a “groundbreaking” collaboration with University of Kansas Health System and LMH Health called Kansas Team Health, aiming to minimize potential conflicts of interest between medical personnel and the university’s coaches and administrators. Under the policy, Hudy and about 40 other sports medicine staffers — other strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, athletic trainers, nutritionists and wellness coordinators — were to be converted to employees of University of Kansas Health Systems, reporting to medical professionals rather than athletic department personnel.

    That was from Topeka cap.

Sounds like the AD is being proactive so as to make med staff independent. Would seem to be a good move to help limit liability. Just a thought.

Agreed. I have no issues with them instituting it.

Sucks Hudy wanted to leave because if it, but ultimately this is a good move LT.

  • Guys, let’s relax. Hudy is good, very good, and undoubtedly helped our teams - but she was the strength and conditioning coach, can and will be replaced.

  • @Marco I’m sure she has capable assistants that can step up, and continue the program Hudy put into place.

  • The whole reorganization of the S&C staff was to limit the AD’s liability in this age of concussions and all that. We’re the first, but everyone will eventually move to this model.

  • A.H. is dead to me now. No point talking about anyone that does not want to be at KANSAS.

    Buh Bye

Exactly what the hell you callin it then - -somebody who gives you 15 years of their adult life an then talk like that? - -that’s A hater WAKE UP

  • @nuleafjhawk you wrote her out of the will i’m guessing…Maybe Bill sent Andrea down there in order to ensure Shaka keeps his job.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 A lot of people don’t get me. I’m glad you do!

  • @jayballer73 Haters are anybody that thinks that anyone who has a different opinion than them is a hater.

    Quit hatin.

    Mmmmm… 🤔 pretty salty if not hating…

I do appreciate the point that it was her own choice at the end of the day. But jb is right, they changed it up on her

  • I am not a S&C guy (don’t need it, being so buff and all) and don’t know why KU wanted to go in a different direction. Why did they? Did they want to go more lean - concentrate more on agility and speed rather than bulk - what?

  • @Marco We wanted to prop up shaka so we could continue to rack up wins.

Shaka better do something or he won’t get to know Hudy long lol

  • @approxinfinity I honestly meant nothing by it, just - she’s gone, let’s move on. Remember when Ol’ Roy left? Good grief, some people STILL hate him for that. Personally, I was really ticked for about 5 years then I thought " Hey, he did a great job for KU, kind of re-ignited a passion for a lot of people that had slacked off on KU Basketball." I got over it and now I root for him whenever they’re not playing us.

And maybe because I’m a homer, I will never understand people who leave KU - - BASKETBALL - - to go somewhere else. Makes no sense to me.

  • And maybe because I’m a homer, I will never understand people who leave KU - - BASKETBALL - - to go somewhere else. Makes no sense to me.

    100%

That’s the tough thing about her exit. Leaving for something better?!? How is the same position at Texas better??? I’m just surprised. I hope Long didn’t screw us. Oh well. Next

  • Texas is one of the biggest athletic departments in the country. While KU is a great basketball program, there’s really no comparison between the UT athletic department and KU. It’s the equivalent of being the starting shortstop for the Yankees and being the starting shortstop for the Diamondbacks. Yeah, both are in the majors, and the guy with the D-backs may be the better player, but from a prestige perspective, there just isn’t any comparison.

Hudy has made quite a career for herself. She broke into a male dominated field, moved from a small D1 school in UConn to a nationally recognized P5 program, and now is at the biggest athletic department in the country. Hudy basically moved to the top of her field. Not sure many of us would pass up a job that allowed us to move to the top of our chosen field. I can’t blame her for doing the same, particularly when she had no previous ties to KU.

  • @justanotherfan Well, and I say good luck Hudy and thank you for your service - Next!!

  • @justanotherfan Didn’t Hudy dislike having to mess with football players? I though she was basketball only hire at Texas, so how’s it a step up from KU basketball to Texass basketball? I understand Texas athletics overall is huge, much more impressive than KU as a program… but just basketball is something different. She didn’t leave for Texas, she left to get away from KU and I’d like to understand why more wasn’t done to keep her.

  • @nuleafjhawk I understand your feelings, because we are both diehard fans–we can’t imagine switching! But we also have to remember she came to KU to take a new job. She isn’t an alum, and her tenure has been purely as a coach doing a job. That doesn’t create the type of school loyalty found in those of us who have been fans since grade school, or who attended at the beginning of adulthood while experiencing all the fun and passion college entails. People abandoning lifelong school loyalty I don’t get, but people taking good opportunities I do.

So, instead of “Don’t let the door…” I would say, “Thanks for giving us such great years. We will remember you fondly.” Sounds like your eventual feeling about Roy.

  • @dylans she’s doing men’s and women’s bb. In my opinion she was being asked to do more, like do the dishes and the laundry. Think the the new health services want more out of their employees year round. Cut costs! I’m sure Texas will pay her more and let her do her thing on the side.

  • @mayjay I really do try hard to put myself in other’s shoes. But if you’re at - arguably - THE best basketball program in the nation - why do you leave to go to Texas???

I could see —gasp— Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke - those kinds of names.

Forgive me for asking this, I really don’t know. Is she just the strength coach for basketball - or does she do football and other sports too? If so, then I could see that. Although, if she’s the strength coach for football - what better opportunity to start at the ground floor and build a dynasty than at Kansas?

  • @nuleafjhawk The strength and conditioning program was recently reassigned and no longer reported to KU Athletics. She may not have a been a fan of that change or her new bosses.

$$$ is also likely a factor as she’ll be able to do more outside business in Austin than in the Lawrence/KC area.

It sucks she’s leaving, but there’s definitely more to it than simply a change of scenery.

  • @nuleafjhawk “I really do try hard to put myself in other’s shoes.”

Lee Child (Jack Reacher books) had Jack telling a joke his older brother used to say, which was something like this:

Never criticize a man until you’ve walked a mile in his shoes. Then, when he gets mad, you will be a mile away and without shoes he won’t be able to run after you anyway.

  • @mayjay Love, love, love Jack Reacher series. Can’t wait for the new one coming Oct. 29th. I’ve read them all
