Latest on Dotson

  • To be clear, there are more pts in next years draft, and I want him to go higher than the one we just lost. Thought it might sound like I meant grimes. Nothing against him, I just don’t think he wants to be at KU, or any school.

@BShark I’m a lil nervous, mainly thinking about next years pt’s. Love to see him go before what’s his name, not to be mentioned by me again!

Me too, next year would be rough without Dot and nothing is official until it is announced.

    Hopefully that expectation is reality

  • @BeddieKU23 - hope springs eternal. Q did well at point in FIBA games.

  • @Gorilla72 he was gold all the way around! He did say during the combine, he only showed 50% of what he could do while at KU👀 🤬 not a good look, or smart thing to say in my book. He dove on the floor, so he wasn’t protecting the goods, so beats me! I’m not begging him to come back.

In High School yes. In College the product was less then appealing. I cant imagine even if he comes back and Dotson didn’t that he’d be the choice to run the team. His passing and vision was suspect at best most of the season.

  • Newell has a good piece up on the Star. Devon is still a second round pick. He’ll come back without a guarantee of money.

  • @BShark Don’t sound so enthused my dude!

  • @FarmerJayhawk Probably but not necessarily. Dana Dotson is quoted in a Star article saying that 92% of the top 22 picks in the second round received guaranteed deals. I did not know that either. That is almost everyone… I guess it comes down to how much you want guaranteed.

  • @Woodrow they must really want to go.

For sure. I think the back half of the second round usually only gets a year, which isn’t a ton of money comparatively. I think the minimum full season salary is around $800k, and there’s a really high probability he’ll spend a lot of time in the G League, where the pay is even less if his deal is a two way.

  • Do we know what time tomorrow decisions have to be turned in?

  • The odds are small that coming back to school would hurt him, the odds are very high that another year at KU will greatly help him. He wants to be a high draft pick ? Get yer arse back to KU.

  • I read where the Dotson family was upset over a story a week ago saying he would be back. They adamantly denied they had made any decision at all. I mean…if Dotson doesn’t come back, i’ll bet we’ll see Derryck Thornton’s name come popping up. Ugh…

Whoever started that rumor needs to disappear…

As for Thornton, not in any universe. I’d run Garrett out at the PT over him.

  • @KUSTEVE

I’d let doke be pg before thornton

  • Thornton…Thornton…Thornton…Just the name evokes primal screams from the audience…lol. 2 to 1 his name pops up if DD flys the coop…Book it, Danno…

I believe it’s midnight eastern tomorrow. I expect him to announce some in the morning. I’m sure they will make the decision this evening.

  • @Woodrow

More from the article that talks about how more and more second rounders are getting guaranteed contracts and thus deciding to stay In the draft

“…That doesn’t mean it’s always the right decision to forego remaining eligibility. These salaries are big, but they aren’t life-changing and certainly don’t amount to the kind of money that would allow a player to avoid having to work once their basketball career comes to an end. What it does is muddy the waters, and make it that much more likely that a borderline first round pick would opt to enter the NBA draft.”

I think they have all the way till midnight – I think

  • @Woodrow thank you.

  • Just found this

The deadline for college players to remove their name from the 2019 draft pool if they wish to return to school is 10:59 p.m. Central time Wednesday.

  • Heard an interesting rumor about Grimes returning to college but transfering to Arizona State.

That would be a weird choice. ASU has Remy Martin, who’s a really good PG. Probably a 4 year guy too since he’s maaayyybe 5’11.

  • @FarmerJayhawk It would be really weird, but Grimes also isn’t a PG.

  • @kjayhawks Exactly. I would think the reason he’d transfer is to play PG. I’ve about given up figuring out what those folks want.

  • @FarmerJayhawk no lie lol

  • Kinda curious as to why Grimes would transfer. He would have to sit a year. He can play at KU…

His circle still firmly believes he is a PG and that Bill mis-handled him is my understanding of the situation.

  • Odd … if Grimes thought he should be playing PG, he committed to KU after Dotson committed. Not sure what his camp thought.

This was the main reason Marquette thought they had a chance. But Bill did a great job selling Q on the program. It’s too bad Grimes was just so damn slow and it was such a huge adjustment for him to play off the ball.

  • From a very recent 247sports article:

“…For now, Parrish listed Dotson under his expected returnees, while backcourt mate Quentin Grimes is in the “definitely gone” section despite Grimes’ lack of an official announcement to this point.”

Good !! my always very active dislike of grimes and his parents (or just his dad) keeps growing by the day. Let us only hope we can learn in future recruiting from this.

Yeah, that’s it !!! self just didn’t use you right Quentin! otherwise you would be a first-rounder!!

  • Why wouldn’t Grimes just go overseas for a year and re-enter the draft next season? He’s not really nba material unless we truly only saw 50% of what he can do. *Cough * bullsnit *cough *

  • Grimes will never be NBA material. The Michigan State game aside (which also didn’t impress me due to them playing off the ball thinking that he could and would drive), I knew it after only a few games - a slow mover both with and without the ball, hesitant while trying to decide on his shot, shoddy defender at best.

  • HighEliteMajor said:

Yeah very good point. Their fault from the beginning. And Dotson beat him out for that spot.

  • Great coaches like Self break you down and build you up. Some players break early and build early(Dotson), some break early and take half a season(Oubre), and some break and need more than 1 season to really get it. I’d put Grimes into that last category. Of course, his mental makeup inst going to allow himself to be coached long enough to maximize his overhyped ability.

Some break entirely and never recover (Bragg).

  • @BShark that had nothing to do w/coaching, IMO

  • Dotson was previously scheduled to do a workout for the Kings today and is no longer reported as going to be there. 🙏🏼

    Maybe/Hopefully

So he either is coming back or got a guarantee.

REALLY NOT LIKING THE SECOND POSSIBILITY

  • Everything I read was that he was supposed to fly home yesterday and didn’t have anything planned for today as far as workouts.

  • I read the Athletic article with quotes from NBA personnel and the consensus seems to be that Dotson’s a late second rounder at best.

Shooting and distribution need to improve dramatically for him to stick in the league.

That said, it’s hard to see D leaving unless he desperately wants out of college ball. Guess I don’t understand why the decision is going down to the wire when it’s apparently a no brainer.

  • Really… if he come back to college he will eventually be a first rounder. What I’m guessing is happening is that teams are dangling some guaranteed numbers at the dotsons… teams need role players and low paid bodies and are willing to take a gamble on guaranteed contracts, but usually these are guys in the top 50. Dotson is not currently in the top 50, and would obviously benefit from more Hudy and more D1 level competition, As well as lots of TV exposure with Kansas

What if I told you it’s more slim than the possibility of me becoming a dook fan?

  • From Bossi, “FWIW, I was told last night that the possibility of Grimes returning to Lawrence had increased quite a bit in the last 24-48 hours. Not saying he will (though we will know soon enough) but this time yesterday I would have put his chances of return at slim and none with slim out the door.”
