2020 Recruiting

Sounds like Bryce Thompson has blown up this Spring. I’ve seen a lot of articles about how much he has improved. I really hope Self and the staff are prioritizing him. Looks like a lot of new schools are recruiting him now.

He’s always been good imo. Hope this doesn’t end up like Sam Williamson.

  • @BShark

At this point probably will. UNC is sniffing

  • @BShark is this the son of a former player of Self’s?🤔 who am I thinking of?

Yes. Missing on him would be an epic whiff.

Agree but we always seem to lose out for being in early. Hopefully the relationship is what wins out

  • You know guys (yeah, I’m going to say it), I’m not a big fan of - weren’t these Condi Rice’s recommendations? - these new agent and NBA draft rules. Who is going to come back? “Gee, I don’t know, we’ll let you know when we do.”

Many of the proposals while well intentioned were terrible. The road to hell and whatnot.

  • @BShark Not so sure about the road to hell. The problem that I have with the whole thing is that it only takes into account the right of the student-athlete and not the program or university. If the rights of only the student-athlete are important then why do we need the NCAA?

  • @Marco I was thinking about all the changes in general. The regional camp thing is a nightmare that is good for no one.

  • @BShark

The problem is the people that created the recommendations only looked at the things they didn’t like about the current system, without considering the things that are good about the current system.

For instance, let’s say you’re a random kid that isn’t ranked very high (or not ranked at all), you go to a non-powerhouse school in your state, etc. Under this new system, your chances of proving yourself and getting on a P5 coaches radar are basically gone because you won’t get the invite to the camp to go toe to toe with some of the top players in your class. That’s how Jevon Carter ended up at West Virginia. That’s part of how Frank Mason got on Bill Self’s radar. They weren’t super high ranked throughout high school. They probably wouldn’t have gotten an invite to the regional camp. But the AAU circuit allowed them to prove they could flat out play, and that landed them P5 opportunities. This system takes that chance away for a lot of kids because they won’t get those AAU chances to prove themselves.

Yeah, AAU has its seedy characters and questionable ethics, but it also has a lot of programs that give kids exposure that they otherwise could not get playing for their local high school, and playing a role that might be more similar to their college role. There are a lot of 6-6 guys that will be wing players in college, but they are the de facto center on their HS team because of talent and personnel. But on their AAU squad, they play the 3 spot, which is where they need to be to get properly evaluated by college coaches on both ends.

No system would ever be perfect, but neither the old system or this new one really solves the problem. This one tries to take the money out of the top part of the game, but may suffocate the lower tiers along the way. Think of it this way - the kids that get recruited to the low major programs, or the D2 level, are now going to miss out on that type of exposure. Those kids play AAU, too. Maybe they aren’t a fit for their local D2 program, but there’s a coach in Ohio or Texas or Florida or Arizona that has a roster spot that they fit into. But with these local camps, non major recruiting is going to get really regionalized, which may cost some deserving student athletes a shot.

  • Seems like N’Faly Dante is leaning toward staying in 2020. Nobody on his list really has room for him at this point other than Oregon and not sure he wants to go there.

  • We need to sign Dante.

  • Marco said:

    Swoosh

  • Honestly, the prep school to pro might happen for Dante. Could see a year overseas as well. Don’t want to be “overseas guy” like Jerry Meyer was circa 2016, but it’s an appealing option for a kid like N’Faly. Hate to say it but if he goes to school in 2020 I think Oregon (with Scottie Barnes, we’re not getting him) or UK. Cade Cunningham is one of my top 5 players in the class and I’d love to have him but he and Dante could be lethal.

  • @FarmerJayhawk The assumption with Cade is UK right? But he basically never talks about his recruitment so who knows.

  • @BShark yup. It’s early to say it’s a lock, but they’re the leader in the clubhouse. He seems genuinely intrigued by Kansas, so I bet we get an official at least. I think Daishen Nix is the guy at PG for us though. Self is all about him. Greg Brown is target A, B, and C at the 4 spot as of today. UNC and Texas will be tough to beat. I really like Jalen Suggs (dude is tough as nails and can play 1-3) and Xavier Foster, who seems open. We offered Foster last summer. Really skilled 4/5 man. Going to be tough to pull from Iowa. But might be legit 7’0 240 by the time he gets to college. The 2020 class is really the first I’ve been excited about since 2016.

Got to remember - -Could be Kyree sticks in 2020 - IF he sticks in2020 -think we have a good shot with him. - We could slide him in several different spots. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Good call. If Ochai goes pro we’ll have more PT than he could ever want. I think he ends up in 2019. We have a legit shot if we miss on Rayjon.

  • @BShark Where do you think Dante will go, Kentucky?

  • @Marco LSU if Will Wade is still there.

Ya I’m kinda of thinking he very well could too. - Not as excited about that now as when things didn’t look as good with RJ. - -that would be a no lose situation - either Rayjon - -OR Kyree. - -Kyree is an absolute beast - - really thick - -incredible hops - I would love to have him here. - -Having said that -would this be a case of taking the experience with our grad Rayon that is NBA caliber if presented - -as much as I love Kyree I think the answer to that question is simple – We take Rayjon if nothing more because of experience

Talent wise I believe it’s a wash - -experience just means so much - -wish we could have both but that’s not happening. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Duke already landing 5* players for 2020. Jeremy Roach a PG is the first of many I would assume .

    checks profile

    sees Nike team USA jersey

    Carry on.

  • A new name mentioned in our 2020 recruiting that I hadn’t heard mentioned anyways.

Mady Sissoko 6’9 - - - 230 lb -from Mali- - - ranked at the present # 51 player in the class of 2020 ( Mount Pleasant Wasatch Academy. - - article stated Tremendous Athlete , long plays with a level 10 motor , legit rim protector , and legit rebounder from both sides of the court. He caused a delay in one of the games after a powerful dunk from him partially broke part of the rim.

His list of Schools at the present are BYU , Colorado , Oregon St , Utah , Utah St , & KU - - from seeing this list looks to me like might be hard to get off the Western pat of the Country or Coast. - - -From the sounds of it , I’m sure gonna be getting more interest for sure. - -This article summary was given by John Gershon - - - -who knows what will happen we shall see. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

    Basically Diallo 2.0

  • @BeddieKU23 Can we take a team vote before we ink him to an LOI?

    If he’s a multi-year Diallo I’d take him in a heartbeat.

  • HEY - - what has happened to us with our recruitment on Greg Brown? -had a article on him off Zags Blog about his recruitment. - -I know we were recruiting him and recruiting him pretty hard.

Now he says several schools recruiting him hard and KU is not listed. - - -Brown stated that Memphis - - - Texas - - -North Carolina - - & Auburn are the schools that have been working the hardest , stating that he was planning to cut his list like I think he said around Jun or July to like 7 schools, - we better stay hard on this kid - -we had been active with him for some time and now NOTHING?

ANYONE know any more info - -really good player. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Nike won’t allow him to go to KU.

  • Why don’t the players just wear Nike or Adidas or UA on their jerseys? Then we’d know who these players are really playing for.

  • KirkIsMyHinrich said:

Greg Brown is actually Adidas AAU but I just assume Nike will get him if they want him. See Hurt, Matt.

  • I’m not sure what the strategy is in 20. We need a big, big group again. Brown and Dante are the big targets but I think UNC for Brown and Oregon for Dante.

  • Some good info from the Star (oxymoron I know) on some 2020 guys. https://www.kansascity.com/sports/college/big-12/university-of-kansas/article230345514.html

  • And I absolutely love Isaiah Todd. UK is going to be a nightmare though.

  • Would be concerned about Bryce Thompson as of now. Officially visited Oklahoma yesterday…

  • Jaden Springer cut his list to 11 including KU. Surprisingly no Duke/UK at this time. Can’t imagine that actually stays that way heading into the summer. I know he’s a longshot. Just passing along that he has KU on his long list

  • BeddieKU23 said:

Rivals is 100% Tenn and 24/7 is 100% UNC. Found that interesting.

  • @BShark So the bidding war begins. Whoever offers the most zeros wins…

  • @BShark

Interesting. I haven’t paid much attention to him to him since he’s really a longshot. IMG as we know does us no favors either.

Looks like Tennessee is trending for a 4 star SG Keon Johnson who announced a final 3 and will announce in August.

I know Springer took an official visit to Tenn already and has visited 3 times overall… Hmm

  • Saw the recent article on Cade Cunningham, another unlikely guard KU can get. His Brother played at SMU under Larry Brown which could be some sort of “in”. Seems like if Kentucky wants him they will get him. He’s a stud, top 3 player in 20 from what I’ve seen

Wouldn’t be the first player Larry has dropped off to Bill. If he can…I’d be all about it. Cade is soooooooo good.

  • @BShark

Legitimately a PG at his size. Crazy

  • KU HAS OFFER A SCHOLARSHIP TO 2021 5- STAR TERRENCE CLARKE

  • KU recently offered 5 star guard Cam Thomas of Oak Hill. Master Bucket getter is all you need to know here

  • Really wondering where KU’s focus will be in 2020. I wouldn’t consider anyone in the Top 15 to end up at KU right now.

Kyree Walker seems like the prospect we have the most traction with but he’s been bouncing between 19 & 20. I don’t think it will end well if he sticks in 20 when other teams look at him as a focus. The edge for KU in 19 was having scholarships available and PT.

Is it just me or does it feel like KU is behind the 8 ball with this class? Didn’t get many underclassmen on campus for visits. KU has 5 starting spots to sell after this season. I’m surprised how little interest kids have with that

  • BeddieKU23 said:

That’s a great description. He’s not super quick, or super athletic, or really big, or anything else. He just puts the ball in the basket over and over and over.

Now, he’s not overly small, or unathletic, or slow by any means. But the thing that stands out about him when you watch is that he puts the ball in the basket all the time.

  • @BeddieKU23 I just think we have a weird roster at the moment. We have those tweener guys that scare players away. You’re not telling anyone they’re starting over Ochai in 2020. McBride should scare some PGs. Braun is a 6’8 Wing player with a stroke. Garrett will be a Senior Wing player. Enaruna a guy plenty athletic to have a good Sophomore season at PF. Big Dave at C.

I guess I personally just don’t see 5 starting spots to sell at the moment. I see a lot of competition.

There’s a lot of Malik Newman in him. Not saying they are the same type of prospect but the ability to score is what they do best. I’m surprised we didn’t offer earlier. He’s one of the best scorers in the country regardless of class

Recruiting just seems to be changing quicker then KU can keep up.

Positions KU will have to focus on regardless is PG & PF/C. KU will need at least two big bodies even if Jaylen signs with KU.

  • Let’s get Cunningham and Todd and just dumpster opponents.
