Oh Yes They Call It the Streak
-
I did a little quick analysis of each team’s remaining schedule, to determine our chances of continuing the amazing streak.
It appears that Iowa State has the most favorable path (easiest road games). I see them ending up with 4 losses (@KSU, at home to either BU or TT), which means we can only lose one more…the road game in Lubbock. Which also means we must win at KSU tuesday. If we drop that one then we have to win out…a tall task this year.
KSU seems to have the 2nd easiest road. If they knock off BU they will end with 4 (meaning they drop both to us)
I see Baylor fading down the stretch and ending with 6 losses.
The WV and TX give-a-ways are going to be hard, but not impossible, to overcome. We have to beat KState twice and get a little help, which would likely end in a tie for the league with KSU. I am more than fine to share this year in light of all our adversity. The state of KS hoops domination.
Rock Chalk!

The seasons blend together in my mind, but it seems like the league in at least a few of our championships has folded come crunch time handing us the title. Yesterday gives me a little hope that the team will still be able to pull this off.
-
PS Thanks for talking about basketball instead of lawyers, boosters, NCAA dictators, NCAA gangbangers, NCAA archvillains, NCAA Absolute Totalitarians, and NCAA Despots!
-
@wissox Ha! No extra charge! And I figured you and @mayjay and maybe a few others might even be old enough to remember my title line from the horribly cheesy 70’s ditty. Maybe not.
-
2nd Ray Stevens reference in the last couple days personally. Funny, I haven’t thought about him in years.
-
@Fightsongwriter ISU might have a slightly easier schedule, but KSU only has 2 losses, I think they might be in the drivers seat. If they beat us Tuesday…they will be 2 games ahead of us…tough to make up. Agree with @wissoxfan that usually teams stumble, lose a game or two they shouldn’t and we win the title. We’ll need to hope for that again, I’m afraid. If we don’t win on Tuesday, we will probably need some big time help. Agree about Baylor…4 tough road games. If they win it…they will have earned it down the stretch and I’m not a believer in them…yet.
-
@Fightsongwriter Oh and I am one of the old guys who remember the silly song…but I confess I didn’t pick up on that until you mentioned it…pretty clever!
-
@Hawk8086 Ethel, put your clothes on!!

@Fightsongwriter Graduated HS in 1974. Height of the fad. Even made the Oscars. Drove a couple times–once while my friends “dared to be bared” at my English teacher’s house, and another time when a friend was on a date at a Putt Putt.
Good old days!

Kansas st has the toughest next 5 imo. KU has historically played well in Manhattan but we will need the guys to have poise and leadership which has crumbled on the road in epic fashion. If KU wins Tuesday they put themselves right in the drivers seat especially since KSU plays Baylor right after us. I think Tuesday can be the chess piece that puts everything in place. We need a marque road win and coming off a charged up win at home its the perfect opportunity. I say this with optimism but I have no idea how much my thoughts will matter in the end
-
I don’t remember the song, and I asked my wife who knows a lot more 70’s music than I do didn’t remember it either. I often wondered the origin of your name.
-
@BeddieKU23 Yes, Tuesday is huge. My concern is that we have 3 freshmen in our main rotation. Tough environment to put them in.
-
A classic. Shag carpet. Disco. Big lapels. Golds and browns. Gas station lines. And the streak.
-
-
@wissox I wrote the lyrics to the KU fightsong.
-
@Fightsongwriter I am hoping you are Matt. If you are George, we need to get together and submit some doctor for a Nobel Prize!
From KUAthletics.com
The Fight Song “I’m a Jayhawk,” written in 1912 by KU graduate George “Dumpy” Bowles, became popular with KU students in 1920. The lyrics remained unchanged until 1958, when slight revisions included rival schools in the Big Eight Conference. After longtime rivals Nebraska and Colorado in June 2010 announced plans to leave the Big 12 Conference, KU alumni asked the Alumni Association about adapting the lyrics after 50 years. Future conference changes will not automatically dictate further changes to the lyrics.
The songwriting contest’s winning entry, authored by Matt Schoenfeld, talks about the Sooners, the Cowboys and the seven other rivals that remained in the changing Big 12 Conference. A panel of judges selected Schoenfeld’s rendition from six finalists. His lyrics alter the first verse and one line of the chorus:
“I’m A Jayhawk” (October 2010) by Matt Schoenfeld
Talk about the Sooners, Cowboys and the Bears, Aggies and the Tiger and his tail. Talk about the Wildcats, and the Cyclone boys, But I’m the bird to make 'em weep and wail.
Chorus: 'Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, Up at Lawrence on the Kaw- 'Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, With a sis-boom, hip hoorah, Got a bill that’s big enough To twist a Tiger’s tail, Rope some 'Horns and listen To the Red Raiders wail- 'Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayhawk, Riding on a Kansas gale.
Congrats, by the way. Nicely done!

@mayjay I should have said Co-wrote. And thank God my nickname isn’t Dumpy! Oddest contest ever. No prize.

If we get any kind of leadership moving forward, we still should win our conference.
It’s no surprise to me that we won by such a large margin over TTech on Saturday… after Devonte gave a message to the guys. Our guys need a leader. Plain and simple. Just look how they responded to Devonte stepping in with some leadership language!
This is the time for Dotson to stand up. He can stand up now and save our season. Save the streak. And be well-poised to gain full control of this team next year.
He can start his new role of alpha dog by staying in Vick’s grill to keep him going throughout our remaining games. When a freshman can push a senior… you’ve got your alpha dog and I can see Dotson carrying on the conference torch all four years at Kansas!
This really is the crucial time. Maybe Sherron can contact Devon and build him up on how he owned the purple kitties in Manhattan!
-
I agree about the environment with a young team. They have seen Rupp, Iowa St, and West Virginia now so I expect that this team can play through this at this point. Usually we come into Manhattan locked in loaded over the years. Would be nice to see them bring it on Tuesday
-
I think you are giving ISU too much credit and how tough it is to win on the road in this conference not enough credit. I bet the winner of this conference has a bare minimum of 5 loses, more than likely 6. WV did just beat OU at home this past weekend, they also beat us and blew a 21 point second half lead in manhattan. They sneak up and get a couple more wins.

If konate heals up, that will make a huge difference
-
@Crimsonorblue22 This article seems to indicate Konate is out for the season:
It’s from early January, so facts may have changed.
