SUMMER LEAGUE: Phoenix v Kings ESPN @ 6:30 C

  • I’ve been watching a bit of the summer league games. Perry Ellis played Friday night for Milwaukee. Great to see him. I hope to see Josh and Frank tonight, but you never know who’s going to play.

  • @stoptheflop

Josh played yesterday but not really a good shooting outing. 12 points on 4 of 16 and 0 of 5 from 3 although he had a full court drive to score. He is wearing short hair now.

  • Selden plays at 8 on nbatv.

  • Billy Preston got a two way contract with the Cavaliers. taking that early money sure costed him many millions and security.

He will be the poster child and a cautionary tale for what happens when you get caught taking money under the table.

  • @JayHawkFanToo but then again you got ayton🤡

  • I think svi plays at 10:30, ESPN. Dg?

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Ayton did not miss a single game and went #1 in the draft. Sean Miller is still coaching at Arizona, the school did not get any penalties from the NCAA and we never heard from the alleged tape the FBI had. Either Ayton never took any money as he claims or he figured out how to do it without getting caught. Maybe a Billy should have talked to him…😄

  • @JayHawkFanToo Exactly. Big story by ESPN that created all kinds of havoc, and yet here we are with no follow up at all. My personal opinion all along was that it was pure fake news, and I haven’t been proven wrong yet.

  • Svi kicking rear, 3-4 from 3 so far, self coming up. ESPN

  • @Crimsonorblue22 17 pts, 9 Reb, 4-8 from 3! Nice!

  • @approxinfinity He had more boards than Mo Wagner, even though he played less time. I noticed Newman played 12 minutes, and had 3 points. Wayne led the Grizzlies with 20 points, and Josh had another off shooting night, going 3 for 12. Maybe Josh is like Sampson- maybe he should grow his hair back, and his shooting will improve…Frank had a mild night…I hope he is 100% healthy…

  • @KUSTEVE Josh still flips the ball up when he shoots. His form needs work.

  • @KUSTEVE

Do you see the block he had on Bagley? That was one impressive block and he stared Bagley down afterwards.

  • Svi Mykhailiuk is drawing comps to Klay Thompson after a few summer league games.

His nickname should be the UKlaynian.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

Comping him to Klay Thompson seems a little much right now. Klay is an elite defender in the NBA. I haven’t seen anything to indicate that Svi is on track for that. Bigger JJ Redick seems a more likely landing spot for Svi, which isn’t a bad place to be, because that’s still a decade long career making good money.

  • Svi has looked good so far. If he can make shots he’s got a chance for a rotation spot

Devonte was solid in his last game as well

  • In addition to all the ones mentioned, 3 former Jayhawks playing for the Pelicans, Diallo, Alexander and Coleby. Arthur White and Milton Doyle are still trying to secure a roster spot in the League; both have played on the G League and and off at the the top level.

One thing I noticed is that the KU players I have been following in the Summer League including Mason, Graham, Svi, Newman, Selden and Ellis, particularly the first two, all seem to play very unselfishly often passing shots to feed a player in better position to score, a trait that they obviously picked up at KU. This is pretty noticeable when they are surrounded by a majority of very selfish players that are often taking poor shots rather than sharing the ball.

  • @justanotherfan I agree with you. His mechanics, though, especially on his pull-up jumper look a lot like Klay Thompson’s. The comments I was reading were from Lakers fans who haven’t watched him play much other than the summer league games. They were also throwing around Peja Stojakovic.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

If they say offensively, he comps well to Klay, I can agree with that. It’s just that when I think of Klay Thompson, I think of one of the best all around players in the league on either end of the floor. I don’t think Svi can duplicate that in the NBA, hence the comp I gave to a taller JJ Redick.

    @JayHawkFanToo

I think the KU players understand that their role at the next level will be as role players, not as stars. Mason and Graham particularly will be backup PGs whose job is to manage the second unit and make sure the offense functions while two or three of the starters rest. That means getting guys good shots, avoiding turnovers and playing good defense. Their own scoring is secondary to that. Same for many of the others, even those whose primary skill is shooting (like Newman and Svi). They are still expected to move the ball around so that they get open shots because they are the third or fourth option in the NBA offense, not the first or second like they were in college.

  • On Saturday Cliff and and Diallo had nice games for New Orleans. 15-5 and 14-9 respectively.

  • That’s why Perry doesn’t show well in an unstructured game. It’s every man for himself, he’s not wired that way. I wish there was a better way, he’s as good as some of those guys that are ball hogs. I know what you all will say.

I enjoyed watching Perry in his time at KU. Unfortunately, he’s just not quite good enough to play in the NBA. In the NBA, he’s a role player - a defense first guy that rebounds and defends the other team’s best wing or stretch 4.

Perry’s game is built around offense first. At every stop, he has been a top scorer, but he’s just not a good enough scorer to be that in the NBA, even as a bench scoring option. That means he doesn’t really have a role on an NBA team.

Basketball wise, Perry may very well be as talented, or more talented than some of the guys in the NBA, but he doesn’t have a good fit because his best skill is scoring, but he would not be a top scorer in the NBA.

If Perry wants to play in the NBA, he needs to remake his game as a rebounding and defending player that can defend 2s, 3s and stretch 4s, while also holding his own in the post against bigger guys sometimes. That will make him a versatile defender with an offensive skill set (basically, Draymond Green without the attitude). If he does that, there’s clearly a place for him in the NBA. The question is if he can completely change his game to do that.

  • Svi had another great game against Cleveland going 12/20, 31 pts in 33 minutes. The game went into double OT, but the OT’s are just 2 minutes. But, there must be a general consensus that Svi’s defense is suspect. Cleveland kept posting Svi up with forwards. Also, Svi wasn’t much of a factor in crunch time; most of the offense was turned over to Josh Hart. Still, Svi has made a huge impact in the summer league. Malik and Preston also played. Preston made a crazy double pump three pointer to keep Cleveland close during OT. I have to say that the summer league games have been fun to watch. The Lakers play again Tuesday night at 9 PM against Portland.

  • @stoptheflop

Yep, Preston’s double pump was indeed crazy. Svi barely touched the ball in the first OT but he did play good defense. Svi was often wide open in the corner from where he has been deadly but it was show time and every man for himself wanting to impress and he was ignored; this likely would not happen in a more structured setting.

  • Malik was just waived by the Lakers. Hope he had a backup plan. Might need to head overseas for the year .

  • Thought he had a 45 day or so contract?

  • @Crimsonorblue22

He had a 2-way contract which is not guaranteed and each team has only 2 of them and the Lakers have more players than available spots. Based on his record it is surprising he was waived but his Summer League play was apparently below of what was expected. I will guess he will play in the G League.

  • Svi has a great opportunity. He’s getting this because of his size and shooting. He’s built well to take the hardship of a long NBA season, and he can really shoot and create his shot. He will have to step up his defense if he wants to earn much time but that will be learned. So much of what he needs is individual coaching. There are many resources available for players like Svi, and I’m sure we will see him take advantage of it. None of our guys leave Kansas knowing how to hedge. They give up easy drives and easy passing lanes. None of this stuff is rocket science, it just requires coaching, focus and effort.

I see a tiny bit of Klay in Svi… like sometimes on how Svi creates his shot. But otherwise, they are miles apart in style, athleticism and ability. But let’s give Svi a break! He’s a young player with an opportunity and we all need to sit back and watch what he does with it! I believe he has his head on straight, and that is usually the biggest hurdle for young players.

  • Interesting that the Kings have just signed Yogi Ferrel, my guess is they’ll see who’s better between him and Frank, then trade the less player kinda like what they did Will Hill last year.
